Aphanius hormuzensis is a small, salt-tolerant tooth-carp endemic to the Hormuzgan drainage of southern Iran, where it inhabits the Shur River and associated coastal drainages along the Persian Gulf shore. Described in 2014 and reaching barely 1.5 in standard length, this non-annual killifish is adapted to the warm, hard, frequently brackish waters of one of the world's most arid coastlines. It has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN, but its restricted range — confined to a handful of localities near Bandar Abbas — and its dependence on low-gradient coastal streams that face mounting agricultural and urban water demand make it a species of quiet conservation concern among Persian Gulf ichthyologists.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphanius hormuzensis was described by Esmaeili, Teimori and Gholami in 2014, with the Shur River near Bandar Abbas in Hormuzgan Province, southern Iran, as the type locality. The species belongs to the genus Aphanius Nardo, 1827, the most diverse genus of Old World tooth-carps (family Aphaniidae), which ranges from the Atlantic coast of Iberia and Morocco east through the Mediterranean basin, Turkey, and the Levant to Central Asia and the Persian Gulf drainage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Aphanius hormuzensis Esmaeili, Teimori & Gholami, 2014.

WoRMS and some later literature note the species under the alternate spelling 'Aphaniops hormuzensis', reflecting a nomenclatural discussion over whether the eastern clade of Aphanius warrants generic separation. Pending formal resolution in Catalog of Fishes, the name Aphanius hormuzensis is used here. The species epithet is a straightforward toponym: hormuzensis refers to Hormuzgan Province and, more broadly, to the Strait of Hormuz region that defines this corner of southern Iran.

The 2021 scale-morphology study by Teimori and collaborators (PubMed 33586268) examined individuals spanning 0.5–3 in SL from the Shur River population, documenting ontogenetic changes in scale structure. This work confirmed the species' identity and provided the most detailed morphological dataset available for the taxon at that time.

Morphology

Aphanius hormuzensis is a diminutive fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1.5 in — typical for the genus, whose members range from about 1–2.5 in SL depending on species and sex. The body plan follows the Aphanius pattern: moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a relatively large head, an upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and a rounded tail.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as in all Aphanius. Males display the genus-typical banding pattern — silvery to bluish-grey flanks crossed by a series of pale, often iridescent vertical bars or spots, with the intensity varying by population and condition. Females are more cryptic, with an olive-brown to tan ground colour and irregular blotchy markings along the flank rather than the male's cleaner barring. The difference in pattern is one of the most reliable field characters for sexing individuals at a glance. Both sexes have the characteristic small, terminal, slightly upturned mouth of a surface-oriented microplanktivore.

The Teimori et al. 2021 study used individuals from 0.5 in up to 3 in SL in its scale-morphology work, suggesting that while 1.5 in is the typical adult size, occasional individuals in the wild reach sizes well beyond this — or that the 3 in figure encompassed the widest available size range of material collected rather than a routine adult maximum.

Habitat

The Hormuzgan drainage of southern Iran is one of the most hydrologically constrained regions in Asia: a narrow coastal strip between the Zagros foothills and the Persian Gulf, receiving less than 8 in of rain annually, where permanent surface water is largely confined to springs, saline rivers, and coastal lagoons. Aphanius hormuzensis is found in this environment — in the Shur River (shur is Persian for 'salty') and in the surrounding coastal drainages near Bandar Abbas, Faryab, Gotab, Kol, Lar, and the Mehran River, per the American Killifish Association locality records.

Water chemistry in these habitats is hard and frequently brackish. FishBase records a pH of approximately 7 and a temperature of 77 °F for the capture localities, but conditions fluctuate substantially with season and tidal influence near the coast. The genus Aphanius as a whole is renowned for salinity tolerance, and the sister species Aphanius fasciatus of the Mediterranean lives comfortably in water with pH above 8, salinities approaching full marine, and very high hardness — conditions that illustrate the physiological range available to this clade. Aphanius hormuzensis shares these adaptations, inhabiting shallow, warm, often highly mineralised water with little shade and strong solar radiation for much of the year.

FishBase classifies the species as inhabiting freshwater and brackish water in the subtropical zone, with permanent (non-seasonal) water availability — the defining condition that underpins its non-annual reproductive strategy.

Feeding

Like other Aphanius, A. hormuzensis feeds primarily at or near the water surface, where its upturned mouth is most effective. The genus is typically described as an opportunistic microplanktivore and aufwuchs grazer: small invertebrates (copepods, insect larvae, small crustaceans), algae, diatoms, and organic detritus all form part of the natural diet, with the exact composition shifting according to what is seasonally available in a given water body.

In the shallow, often turbid, highly mineralised habitats of the Hormuzgan coast, food resources are concentrated at the surface film and in the biofilm coating submerged hard substrates — the primary foraging zones for this species. The combination of small mouth, surface orientation, and generalised gut morphology (the alimentary-tract anatomy literature on closely related Aphanius fasciatus documents a gut suited to processing varied small particles) is consistent with this trophic niche.

In the aquarium, Aphanius are straightforwardly fed on a varied diet of small live or frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, chironomid larvae, and similar items — supplemented with algae wafers or flake food containing a vegetable component. Small particle size is important: the mouth is tiny relative to the fish's overall body depth.

Mating

Aphanius hormuzensis is a non-annual killifish. Unlike the seasonal annuals of South America and Africa that deposit diapausing eggs in drying substrate, A. hormuzensis lives in permanent or near-permanent water and reproduces as a continuous plant- and substrate-spawner over the course of weeks and months. This life-history mode is shared by all Aphanius and is the ancestral condition in the Old World tooth-carp lineage.

Males are territorial and persistently court gravid females with lateral displays that show off their banding pattern to best advantage. The male positions himself alongside or slightly above the female, quivering and pressing against her flank. When a female is receptive, the pair move together to fine-leaved vegetation, submerged roots, or fibrous substrate at or near the waterline, where adhesive eggs are deposited in small batches. There is no bubble nest and no mouthbrooding — the eggs are simply attached to the spawning medium and left.

Based on the reproductive biology documented for A. hormuzensis specifically in the Motamedi et al. 2026 study (Ichthyology & Herpetology), the laboratory fecundity is approximately 170 eggs per month under aquarium conditions, with around 45 % survival to hatching. This relatively modest per-month egg output is consistent with a continuous-spawner strategy spread across a long reproductive season rather than the concentrated clutches of an annual killi.

Breeding

Eggs of A. hormuzensis hatch without diapause: the embryos develop continuously in water at warm temperatures, with the Motamedi et al. 2026 study recording hatching at approximately 166 hours post-fertilisation (hpf) under laboratory conditions. There is no obligate dry period, no peat incubation, and no dormancy — a fundamental difference from annual killies that must be stressed at the outset for any aquarist approaching this species from an annual-killi background.

Fry begin exogenous feeding between 8 and 14 days post-hatching, and infusoria or commercial fry powder are appropriate first foods, graduating to Artemia nauplii as the mouth size permits. The same study documents sexual differentiation becoming visible at 8–12 weeks, after which young males begin showing the characteristic barred pattern. Larval survival under controlled conditions is high. The Motamedi et al. study recommends stocking densities of 50–60 juveniles per 5.5 US gal and 15–20 adults per 5.5 US gal for laboratory rearing, figures that translate reasonably well to dedicated breeding setups in the hobby.

In an aquarium breeding setup, a species tank with a sponge filter, a small clump of fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and slightly brackish water (a pinch of marine salt or a specific gravity of around 1.002–1.005) will encourage spawning. Eggs can be collected from the mop every few days and incubated separately to protect them from adult predation. At 77–81 °F, hatching at approximately seven days is consistent with the 166 hpf figure from the literature.

In the aquarium

Aphanius hormuzensis is not a widely kept aquarium fish, but it is maintained by specialist killifish enthusiasts — particularly in Europe and Iran — and by dedicated Aphanius keepers. The American Killifish Association lists it under its Class 14 (all other Old World killies), where it occupies the same competitive category as the more familiar Mediterranean Aphanius species. Its modest maximum size of under 1.5 in means a pair or small group can be housed comfortably in a 10–15 US gal aquarium.

The species requires hard, alkaline, and ideally slightly brackish water to thrive — soft, acidic water is incompatible with its natural chemistry and will depress health and colour over time. A target of pH 7.5–8.5, moderate to high hardness, and a small addition of marine or non-iodised salt (1–3 g per litre) mimics the Hormuzgan coastal environment and produces the best colouration and spawning activity. Temperature of 72–82 °F suits most of the year, with a modest winter cool-down to 64–68 °F beneficial for long-term health.

Dense vegetation, floating plants, and a dark substrate encourage the shy, surface-skimming behaviour and bring out the male's banding pattern. Males are aggressive toward one another in small tanks, so the ratio of females to males should favour females; or males should be separated into individual compartments when serious spawning is the goal. As with other small killies, tankmates should be chosen carefully — very fast or assertive fish will out-compete the Aphanius at feeding time.

Conservation

Aphanius hormuzensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List — it carries the status Not Evaluated (NE). This is not unusual for recently described narrow-range endemics from the Persian Gulf region, where a substantial number of Aphanius and related tooth-carps remain formally unevaluated despite facing significant and documented habitat pressure.

The species is confined to a small number of localities within Hormuzgan Province — the Shur River near Bandar Abbas, and a handful of associated coastal drainages including those near Faryab, Gotab, Kol, Lar, and the Mehran River. Bandar Abbas is a major industrial and port city; the surrounding region faces intense pressure on surface water from irrigation, urban groundwater extraction, and coastal development. The Shur River, whose name reflects its naturally saline character, is in a drainage system with very limited catchment area, and any reduction in baseflow or contamination of the water table is immediately felt in these shallow, low-gradient coastal streams.

The genus Aphanius as a whole has a poor conservation record: multiple Mediterranean and Middle Eastern species are Endangered or Critically Endangered due to the combined effects of aquifer depletion, agricultural abstraction, introduced species (particularly Gambusia affinis, the mosquitofish, which outcompetes and predates native killies in degraded habitats), and in some cases the filling or diversion of spring-fed habitats for development. The range of A. hormuzensis is small enough that a single significant hydrological event — a prolonged drought, the drilling of a new borehole upslope of the Shur River, or the establishment of Gambusia in the drainage — could eliminate the species from one or more of its known localities. Formal IUCN evaluation and baseline population monitoring are the most pressing conservation needs for this fish.
