Reaching barely 2 in, it is adapted to water that varies sharply in salinity and temperature across seasons, tolerating conditions that exclude most other fishes. Recent taxonomic work has placed it in synonymy with Esmaeilius persicus, reflecting a broader revision of old-world killifish lineages, but the name Aphanius farsicus persists in aquarium circles and on many databases. The species is rarely encountered in the hobby and faces mounting pressure from drought and spring degradation in its native range — conditions that make the few maintained aquarium populations of disproportionate conservation value.

Taxonomy & naming

The Persian killifish was originally described by the Russian zoologist Nikolai Mikhailovich Nikolskii in 1897 from material collected in the Maharlu Lake system near Shiraz, in what was then Persia. The authority is presented in parentheses, indicating the species has since been moved from its original genus placement. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) has tracked the name through a series of revisions within the family Aphaniidae — the Oriental killifishes, a group segregated from the broader Cyprinodontidae in recognition of their distinct biogeographic and phylogenetic position.

A significant taxonomic development came with Freyhof & Yoğurtçuoğlu's 2020 revision of old-world toothcarps, which placed this species as a junior synonym of Esmaeilius persicus (Jenkins, 1910), a name that predates farsicus under priority rules. FishBase currently lists the valid combination as Esmaeilius persicus, referring to Nikolskii's taxon. For the aquarium hobby, Aphanius farsicus remains the name under which material has historically been traded, and the species is treated here under that label pending broader adoption of the revised nomenclature.

The specific epithet farsicus refers to Fars Province, the region of southern Iran from which Nikolskii's type material was obtained. The genus name Aphanius derives from the Greek aphanēs, meaning 'inconspicuous' or 'obscure' — a somewhat modest assessment of a group of fishes whose patterning can be striking in good condition.

Morphology

The Persian killifish is a compact, laterally compressed fish with a body profile typical of the genus Aphanius: a slightly flattened head, an upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding, and a rounded caudal fin. FishBase records a maximum total length of 2 in, placing it among the smaller members of its genus. The dorsal fin is set well back on the body, above or slightly ahead of the anal fin — a characteristic feature of the family.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as in most Aphanius species. Males in breeding condition display a pale silvery-blue or blue-grey body overlaid with a series of silvery vertical bars or spots across the flanks, often with metallic highlights that intensify under oblique light. The finnage is clear to slightly yellowish. Females are duller, showing a more uniform brownish or olive ground colour with faint, irregular spotting or barring — a cryptic pattern that serves concealment in shallow, vegetation-rich water. Outside of breeding condition males become somewhat less vivid, but the barring pattern distinguishes them from females throughout the year.

Habitat

The Persian killifish is endemic to the Maharlu Lake basin in Fars Province, southwestern Iran. Maharlu Lake itself is a shallow, hypersaline endorheic lake, but the species occupies the freshwater-to-brackish spring-stream inputs and associated pools rather than the lake's most saline core. It inhabits vegetation-rich, shallow areas over sand and mud substrates where aquatic plants and algal mats provide cover and feeding opportunities. The fish tolerates a wide range of salinities as water levels fluctuate seasonally and as spring flows shift with rainfall patterns.

The broader landscape of southwestern Iran is classified as arid to semi-arid, with the spring systems of the Central Zagros and surrounding ranges providing isolated freshwater refugia for endemic fish fauna. Research on Iranian Aphanius zoogeography (Limnologica 2015) has highlighted how Early to Middle Holocene climatic shifts fragmented previously continuous distributions, producing clusters of reproductively isolated populations in separate basins — a pattern that makes each spring system a distinct evolutionary and conservation unit. The Maharlu basin population of this species is therefore effectively irreplaceable.

Water temperatures fluctuate considerably between seasons in this continental climate: winter lows may approach 50 °F or below, while summer shallows can reach 77 °F or higher. The species tolerates this range in nature and is not the fragile warmth-dependent fish that some accounts suggest.

Feeding

The Persian killifish is carnivorous, feeding primarily on small invertebrates in the wild — copepods, chironomid larvae, small aquatic insects, and other zooplankton and benthic invertebrates accessible in the shallow, spring-fed habitats it occupies. The upturned mouth indicates a preference for surface or near-surface feeding, taking items from the water film and the upper water column alongside substrate-level foraging.

In aquarium conditions the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods readily — artemia nauplii and adults, daphnia, cyclops, chironomid (bloodworm), and small tubifex are all taken. High-quality micro-pellets and flakes of appropriate size can supplement the diet. Because the fish is small and the gape accordingly modest, food particle size matters: oversized items are ignored or spat out. Varied feeding with a live or frozen component supports good colour in males and condition in gravid females.

Mating

Like all Aphanius species, the Persian killifish is a non-annual plant spawner — its reproductive biology is organised around the deposition of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation, roots, algal mats, or synthetic spawning mops rather than the burial of diapausing eggs in substrate. This mode is consistent with the species' ecological position in permanent or near-permanent spring systems where water persists year-round, unlike the seasonal pools inhabited by annual killifish in which diapause is a survival necessity.

Males court females actively, displaying the barred flanks to full effect and pursuing receptive females through cover. Spawning occurs in the upper water column or among vegetation, with the pair briefly aligning while one or a few adhesive eggs are deposited and fertilised. Eggs are attached to plant material or mop fibres by a short filament and develop in water without diapause, hatching within a predictable period tied to water temperature. Spawning is a protracted, repeat-event process spread over days or weeks rather than a single mass release, and a healthy pair will produce eggs continuously through the breeding season under good conditions.

Breeding

In the aquarium, the Persian killifish is bred using methods standard for non-annual Aphanius: a densely planted tank or one furnished with fine-leaved synthetic mops, with a temperature maintained in the 64–75 °F range. A slight increase in temperature or a water change can stimulate spawning activity. Because the species comes from hard, mineral-rich, sometimes brackish water, a moderate addition of salt or the use of hard alkaline water more closely replicates natural conditions and appears to improve both egg viability and fry survival, though the fish will breed in plain freshwater of moderate hardness.

Eggs are collected by removing mops or plant stems and incubating them separately in shallow containers of clean, moderately hard water at the same temperature, with a small amount of methylene blue or equivalent to suppress fungal growth. Hatch time varies with temperature but typically occurs within one to two weeks. Newly hatched fry are small but immediately free-swimming and can take artemia nauplii as a first food. Adults will consume eggs and fry if given the opportunity, so separation of eggs from the parents is advisable. Growth is relatively steady at typical room temperatures in a temperate climate.

In the aquarium

The Persian killifish is among the rarer Aphanius in captivity, maintained by a small number of specialist killifish keepers, typically from wild-caught or F1–F2 strains of documented collection origin. Its scarcity in the hobby is partly a product of limited wild accessibility — the Maharlu basin is not a region with an active ornamental fish export industry — and partly a reflection of the specialised interests of the hobbyists who keep it. The species is held and exchanged chiefly through killifish society networks.

Housing requirements are modest by fish standards but specific. A small species tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding pair or trio. Water should be hard and alkaline; a target of pH 7.0–7.5 with moderate hardness (GH 8–12 dGH) is appropriate, and a modest addition of aquarium salt (1–3 g/L) is optional but beneficial. Temperature should be maintained in the 59–72 °F range for much of the year, with a cooler winter period of several months to simulate seasonal variation — this appears to improve long-term health and breeding performance. The fish do not require high temperatures and can struggle when kept too warm continuously.

Tankmates, if kept at all, should be other small, non-aggressive species with similar water-chemistry requirements. More commonly this species is maintained as a pure culture. Good filtration with gentle flow, regular partial water changes, and varied live or frozen feeding are the essentials. Because captive populations are limited and their conservation value is real, responsible record-keeping of lineage and collection data is encouraged within the killifish hobby.

Conservation

The Persian killifish has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List — its status is listed as Not Evaluated (NE) — but the absence of a published assessment does not imply security. FishBase conservation commentary notes that the species is in strong need of conservation, a reflection of the precarity of spring-system endemics in arid southwestern Iran.

The Maharlu Lake basin faces multiple converging pressures. Droughts in southern Iran have intensified in recent decades, reducing the volume and reliability of the spring flows that sustain the peripheral freshwater habitats this species occupies. Agricultural and urban water extraction compounds the natural variability, drawing down aquifer levels that feed the springs. Introduced species — particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia) and tilapia, which have been released widely across Iranian freshwater systems — represent a direct predatory and competitive threat to small indigenous toothcarps in the shallow, slow-flowing habitats they share.

The broader pattern documented for Iranian Aphanius by zoogeographic research (Limnologica 2015) is one of highly fragmented, genetically distinct populations in isolated basins, each constituting an irreplaceable evolutionary unit. Loss of a spring system in one basin does not simply reduce the range of a widespread species — it extinguishes a unique lineage. The aquarium population, though small, represents a genuine insurance value if provenance is documented and genetic diversity maintained, and killifish societies have historically played an important role in preserving such species through responsible captive breeding.
