The green panchax is a small, surface-dwelling killifish native to the coastal lowlands of Sri Lanka and southern India, where it inhabits rice paddies, mangrove margins, roadside ditches, and still or slow-moving freshwater and mildly brackish creeks. Rarely exceeding 2 in in length, it is one of the smallest members of the family Aplocheilidae yet carries a disproportionate ecological reputation — it is an efficient surface predator on mosquito larvae and has been deliberately stocked for biological vector control across tropical Asia. Its adaptability to a wide range of salinities and water chemistries, and its undemanding approach to captive reproduction, have made it a long-standing and accessible entry point into killifish keeping for hobbyists worldwide.

Taxonomy & naming

Aplocheilus blockii was first described by the British naturalist J.W. Arnold in 1911, based on material from Sri Lanka, and the authority is presented in parentheses because the species has since been moved from its original genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Aplocheilus blockii (Arnold, 1911), placing it within the genus Aplocheilus Hamilton, 1822 — the panchax killifishes — in the family Aplocheilidae.

The genus Aplocheilus is one of the most familiar in Asian killfish taxonomy, encompassing the surface-oriented panchax group distributed from India and Sri Lanka through Indochina and into Sundaland. AquaInfo notes that the genus name derives from the Greek aplos, meaning simple or plain, and cheilos, meaning lip — a reference to the relatively simple, unadorned mouth structure of these killifish compared with some of their relatives. The specific epithet blockii honours the German zoologist Marcus Élieser Bloch, in recognition of his foundational contributions to ichthyology, though Bloch himself did not describe this species.

The species is occasionally referred to in older literature and the hobby by common names including Block's panchax or dwarf panchax, reflecting both the dedicatee of the epithet and the fish's modest adult size. The name green panchax is the most widely used vernacular in contemporary hobbyist and scientific literature.

Morphology

Aplocheilus blockii is a slender, elongated killifish with the characteristically flattened dorsal profile of a surface predator. Seriously Fish gives a maximum standard length of 1.5–2 in (1.5–2 in), and FishBase records a maximum of 2.5 in SL — most aquarium specimens remain at the lower end of this range. The body is laterally compressed but the dorsal surface is notably flat, an adaptation that positions the upturned mouth in close proximity to the water's surface film where much of its prey is found.

Colouration varies with condition and collection locality but is typically olive-green to yellowish-brown on the flanks, with scattered iridescent scales producing a faint metallic sheen under good lighting. The dorsal surface is darker; the belly is pale. Males are more intensely coloured than females and often show a pattern of faint blue or greenish iridescence on the flanks, with the fins edged in yellow or red-orange. Females are plainer, with the characteristic diagnostic features being the more rounded belly and, in this species, a pattern of dark vertical bars or spots on the flanks that is more pronounced in females than in males. The caudal fin in males may develop extended rays in mature individuals.

Habitat

The native range of Aplocheilus blockii encompasses Sri Lanka and southern India, with Seriously Fish specifying Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka as the core Indian states. The species occupies coastal lowland environments — it is at home in rice paddies, mangrove swamps, roadside ditches, tidal creeks, and the margins of still or sluggish rivers and irrigation channels. Seriously Fish characterises it as euryhaline, tolerating both freshwater and mildly brackish conditions, an unusual breadth for a killifish and one that matches the tidal influence present in many of its coastal habitats.

In terms of water chemistry, Seriously Fish records a temperature range of 68–82 °F, a pH range of 6.0–8.5, and a hardness range of 90–357 ppm — an exceptionally wide window that reflects the chemical variability of coastal and agricultural habitats subject to monsoon flooding, tidal incursion, and evaporative concentration. The species is a confirmed surface dweller, using the uppermost water column and the cover of floating or emergent vegetation. FishBase notes a preference for stationary and sheltered waters, consistent with the still and slow-moving habitats that characterise much of its range.

Feeding

Aplocheilus blockii is a surface predator. Its upturned mouth and flattened dorsal profile are adaptations for intercepting prey at or immediately below the water surface, and FishBase records a diet of aquatic insects, invertebrate larvae, and small fish fry. The species' effectiveness as a mosquito larvivore is well documented and has underpinned deliberate stocking programmes across tropical Asia — it takes mosquito larvae at the surface with precision and in quantity.

In captivity the species is straightforward to feed. It accepts live and frozen foods readily — mosquito larvae (both live and frozen bloodworm are accepted, though live blackworm and daphnia are ideal), small earthworms, and brine shrimp nauplii. Dry foods are taken from the surface after acclimatisation; flake and micro-pellet diets are accepted by most captive-bred specimens. Variety in the diet helps maintain colouration in males. Because the fish is a committed surface feeder, sinking or bottom-directed foods are largely ignored, and feeding should be targeted to the upper water column.

Mating

Aplocheilus blockii is a non-annual killifish — it inhabits permanent or near-permanent waters and does not bury desiccation-resistant eggs in substrate to survive a dry season. Like other members of the Aplocheilus group, it is a plant spawner: pairs deposit adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, floating roots, mosses, filamentous algae, or artificial spawning mops near the surface over an extended period of days or weeks rather than in a single spawning event.

Males court females with lateral displays, showing off their iridescent flank colouration and fin extensions. The mating encounter is brief — a spawning embrace close to the water surface or the chosen plant substrate — and results in the deposition of a small number of adhesive eggs at a time, which the female attaches individually or in small clusters to plant material. Because spawning is continuous rather than event-based, a conditioned pair in an appropriate setup will produce eggs daily or near-daily throughout the breeding season.

Breeding

Breeding Aplocheilus blockii in the aquarium is described by Seriously Fish as not difficult. A conditioning diet of live or frozen foods brings pairs into breeding condition readily, and spawning begins when an appropriate plant or mop substrate is present. Eggs can be collected by removing the spawning mop or plant matter and transferring it to a separate rearing vessel, or by maintaining the spawning pair in a well-planted tank and removing fry as they are noticed.

Eggs are adhesive and are deposited individually on plant surfaces or mop fibres, where they incubate in water with no diapause period. Seriously Fish gives an incubation period of 10–15 days at typical room temperatures. The newly hatched fry are small and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria-grade rotifers or commercial fry powder for the first days, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worm as they grow. Adult fish will consume both eggs and small fry if given the opportunity, so separation of eggs or fry from the parents is advisable. Growth is relatively steady and the fish reach sexual maturity within a few months under good conditions.

In the aquarium

The green panchax is a rewarding aquarium killifish for both beginners and experienced hobbyists. Its modest size (rarely exceeding 2 in), tolerance of a wide range of water parameters, and ease of breeding make it accessible, while its active surface behaviour and the male's metallic colouration provide genuine visual interest. A species tank or a setup shared with other small, surface-tolerant species is appropriate — because Aplocheilus blockii is a capable surface predator, tankmates should be of comparable size or significantly larger, and fish that habitually occupy the upper water column alongside it should be chosen carefully to avoid stress.

Seriously Fish records a water temperature range of 68–82 °F and a pH tolerance of 6.0–8.5, and the species can be maintained in mildly brackish conditions if desired. A tightly fitting lid is essential: like most killies and surface fish, Aplocheilus blockii is a confirmed jumper and will exit any gap in the tank cover. Floating plants such as Indian fern (Ceratopteris thalictroides) and Java moss on the surface serve double duty as decor and as spawning substrate. Filtration should be gentle; strong currents are inconsistent with the still-water habitats the species naturally occupies and may discourage surface-feeding behaviour.

The species has a long history in the ornamental fish trade and remains readily available through specialist killifish societies and hobbyist networks. Its reputation as a mosquito larvivore has kept it in circulation both as an ornamental and as a tool in public health programmes; it is one of the most commonly recommended killifish for newcomers to the group.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Aplocheilus blockii as Least Concern in 2011, based on assessments by Neelesh Dahanukar and Rajeev Raghavan. The Least Concern status reflects the species' wide distribution across Sri Lanka and southern India and its tolerance of disturbed, agricultural, and marginal habitats — rice paddies and drainage ditches are not pristine environments, but they support green panchax populations across much of its range.

Nevertheless the IUCN assessment identifies a suite of threats bearing on the species and its habitats: mining and quarrying operations affecting waterways, dams and water management infrastructure altering hydrology, domestic and urban wastewater discharge, industrial effluents, and agricultural run-off — particularly pesticide and fertiliser loading in the rice paddy habitats that form a significant part of its range. The assessment notes that no targeted conservation actions are in place across most of the range, and that research on taxonomy, population size, and life-history parameters remains needed. Given that Aplocheilus blockii is an efficient mosquito larvivore, its conservation also carries a public health dimension: habitat degradation that reduces populations of this and related Aplocheilus species can increase reliance on chemical vector control in the regions where it occurs.
