Taxonomy & naming
Aplocheilus kirchmayeri was described by Hans-Otto Berkenkamp and Volker Etzel in 1986 from specimens collected in the Margao–Colva area of Goa, India. The valid combination as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is Aplocheilus kirchmayeri Berkenkamp & Etzel, 1986. The species belongs to the family Aplocheilidae and falls within the Aplocheilus blockii species group; it has at times been treated as a subspecies of A. blockii, but the current Catalog of Fishes treatment recognises it as a distinct species.
The genus name Aplocheilus combines the Greek aploe (simplicity) with cheilos (lip), referring to the unadorned lips characteristic of the group. The specific epithet kirchmayeri honours Josef Kirchmayer, the German aquarist who first collected the type material and brought the fish to the attention of European killifish specialists. The species appeared in the Journal of the American Killifish Association across at least ten issues between 1991 and 2024, reflecting the sustained interest it attracted among specialist hobbyists after its description.
Morphology
A. kirchmayeri is a slender, pike-shaped surface fish typical of the Asian panchax bauplan: a flattened dorsal profile, upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and the dorsal fin set far back over the posterior body. FishBase records a maximum total length of 2 in, though field-measured adults in Goa collected by Tony Pinto averaged closer to 1.5 in, suggesting that most wild individuals are substantially smaller than the database maximum and that 1.5 in is the practical upper size for males.
Male colouration is the key identification character within the blockii group: the body scales are brassy green with a silvery ground, the lips are red, and three to four horizontal rows of red spots run along the sides. The unpaired fins — dorsal, anal, and caudal — are yellow-green with superimposed red spotting, and a black blotch marks the base of the dorsal fin. Females are considerably plainer: olive-brown above, fewer iridescent green scales, the red spotting reduced or absent, and the fins clear. Sexual maturity in males is signalled by the development of a yellow band on the anal fin; females remain with clear fins. Adults are fully formed at five to six months of age, with sexual maturity reached as early as two to three months.
Habitat
The known range of A. kirchmayeri is confined to coastal Goa, with documented collection sites at Varca Beach, Colva Beach, and the Margao–Colva inland area. The habitats sampled by Pinto (2003) included a traditional temple bathing tank at Varca, open swamp pools, and seasonally flooded ground influenced by tidal backing from the Arabian Sea. This tidal influence introduces occasional brackish conditions — the species tolerates mild salinity in a way that most Asian panchax do not.
Water parameters recorded in the field were warm and near-neutral: the Varca temple bath measured 86 °F and pH 7 with 8 GH, while the nearby swamp ran slightly warmer at 90 °F with similar pH and 9 GH. These are not the soft, acidic conditions of the deeper forest-stream killifish but the hard, well-lit, often eutrophic conditions of coastal wetlands under tropical sun. Vegetation in these habitats includes floating mats and emergent plants at the water's edge — the structural elements the fish uses for spawning and cover.
Feeding
Like all Asian panchax, A. kirchmayeri is a surface and near-surface predator that takes small invertebrates, aquatic insects, and insect larvae from the water film. The upturned jaw and flat dorsal profile are adaptations for ambush feeding just below the surface meniscus. In the wild, the coastal swamp and temple-tank habitats provide abundant small crustaceans, mosquito larvae, and zooplankton through the warm wet season.
In captivity the fish responds readily to appropriately sized live and frozen foods: newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and adult brine shrimp, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, blackworms, and wingless fruit flies dropped onto the surface are all accepted. As with panchax generally, feeding from the surface is strongly preferred and sinking pellets are less reliably taken. Varied live and frozen foods keep the fish in the best colouration and condition for breeding.
Mating
A. kirchmayeri is a non-annual killifish: it lives in permanent or near-permanent water bodies and reproduces by the plant-spawning mode common to the Asian Aplocheilus. There is no diapause, no peat-burying, and no annual die-off tied to habitat desiccation. Instead, pairs engage in repeated spawning encounters over weeks or months, depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs onto fine-leaved plants, surface roots, or floating spawning mops near the water surface.
Males court females with lateral displays, spreading the coloured unpaired fins and orienting broadside to highlight the red-spotted flanks. Competition between males is visible as parallel swimming and fin-spreading contests; the hierarchy is loose and fin damage in a well-spaced group is modest. Sex determination has been shown to be temperature-sensitive in this species: at temperatures below 75 °F the majority of fry develop as females, at 79 °F the sex ratio is approximately equal, and at 81 °F males predominate — a finding relevant to keepers who wish to control brood sex ratios.
Breeding
Spawning takes place near the surface. Eggs are approximately 0.5 in in diameter, clear, and round, deposited singly or in small clutches on floating mops, Java moss, or fine-leaved aquatic plants. Incubation is in water at ambient temperature — no drying or peat incubation is required — with hatching occurring after 10 to 15 days depending on temperature. Fry are approximately 0.5 in at hatching and free-swimming within a day or two; they are too small to take brine shrimp nauplii immediately and must be started on infusoria or paramecium cultures before graduating to nauplii at several days of age.
A small aquarium of 10–20 US gal is adequate for a breeding trio or quartet. Because the adults will consume eggs and small fry, the easiest management approach is to check mops every few days and remove eggs to a shallow rearing vessel, or to provide so much fine plant cover that sufficient eggs escape predation. The breeding cycle continues year-round in captivity without seasonal cuing, given stable warm conditions. Fry grow steadily and reach saleable size within two to three months.
In the aquarium
A. kirchmayeri is noted in the killifish literature as a challenging species to maintain long-term, a rating that traces to its sensitivity to water quality and its tendency to decline in generalist community tanks where surface space is contested. FishBase flags it as difficult to keep (reference 27139). It is best housed as a species group or with small, non-competitive tankmates that occupy the mid and lower water column, allowing the panchax exclusive access to the surface layer.
The recommended setup is a covered aquarium — the lid is essential, since surface-feeding killifish are strong jumpers — of 10 US gal or more, densely planted with floating plants and fine-leaved species to provide the cover and spawning sites the fish uses in the wild. Water conditions should reflect the field measurements: temperature 82–90 °F, pH around neutral (6.8–7.5), and moderate hardness (6–10 GH). Partial shading from floating plants reduces stress and encourages natural colouration. The species was rare in the trade as of the early 2000s and was not commercially bred at scale; availability typically depends on specialist killifish society members who maintain breeding colonies.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed A. kirchmayeri as Data Deficient (DD) in October 2020, in an evaluation authored by Sidharthan (2023). The DD listing reflects the very limited distributional and population data available for this single-locality endemic rather than an inference of security: the species is known from a handful of collection sites along a short stretch of the Goa coast, all within habitat types — coastal swamp, tidal pool, and temple tank — that face acute pressure from tourism development, coastal urbanisation, water abstraction, and the drainage and filling of seasonal wetlands for agriculture and construction.
The tidal-margin habitats in which A. kirchmayeri was collected near Varca and Colva are precisely the wetland fringes that have been most rapidly lost along the Konkan coast in recent decades. Mosquitofish (Gambusia) introductions for malaria control are documented across Indian coastal wetlands and represent an additional threat to small surface-feeding species such as this panchax. No formal population surveys appear to have been conducted since Pinto's 2003 field collections, leaving the current status of wild populations unknown. Given the combination of extreme range restriction, continuing habitat loss, and the absence of recent survey data, a precautionary approach to wild collection is warranted and captive propagation within the killifish hobby represents an important buffer against local extinction.
