The striped panchax is one of the most familiar Asian killifish in the hobby and one of the few surface-dwelling predators from the Indian subcontinent to achieve genuine mainstream popularity. Native to Peninsular India from the Western Ghats to the east coast, and possibly Sri Lanka, it haunts shallow, sunlit margins — rice paddies, slow rivers, highland streams, swamps, and even brackish backwaters — where its permanently upturned mouth and flattened head are perfectly shaped for snatching insects from the water's surface. A non-annual plant-spawner, it lives considerably longer than the annual killies that dominate the specialist hobby, making it an accessible and rewarding fish for anyone drawn to surface-oriented predators.

Taxonomy & naming

Aplocheilus lineatus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1846. The authority is placed in parentheses because the species has since been moved from the genus in which Valenciennes originally placed it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Aplocheilus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1846), placing it within the family Aplocheilidae, the Asian panchax killifishes.

The genus Aplocheilus is a small assemblage of surface-oriented panchax killifishes distributed across South and Southeast Asia. The striped panchax is the largest and most widespread member and has long served as a sort of reference species for the group in both the aquarium literature and in applied research — it was one of the earliest Asian killifishes deployed for biological mosquito control, a use that brought it to the attention of public health entomologists and water-management agencies as well as aquarists.

The specific epithet lineatus is Latin for 'lined' or 'striped', a straightforward reference to the iridescent horizontal stripes that run along the flanks of males in good condition. The common name 'striped panchax' likewise describes this feature, while 'golden wonder panchax' has become attached to a selectively bred xanthic (golden-yellow) morph that is widely sold in the ornamental trade and is sometimes more commonly available than the wild-type fish.

Morphology

Aplocheilus lineatus is the largest member of its genus, reaching up to 4 in total length, though 3 in is more typical in most populations. The body is slender and cylindrical, deepening slightly toward the dorsal surface, with a distinctly flattened head and a strongly upturned mouth — adaptations that mark it unmistakably as a surface predator. The lower jaw projects slightly beyond the upper, giving the face a characteristically blunt, upturned profile.

Males in prime condition are striking fish. The dorsum is olive-brown, and the flanks carry rows of iridescent golden-green and red spots and dashes that merge into a broken horizontal band along the mid-flank. The caudal fin is rounded and often shows a dark edge with red spotting. Females and juveniles are more subdued in colour, the iridescence largely replaced by a series of 7–11 narrow dark bars running vertically across the flanks — a pattern that is especially visible in younger fish and in stressed or dim-lit adults. The gold wonder morph lacks the olive-brown base and displays a uniform metallic yellow-gold body, a result of selective breeding in the ornamental trade.

Habitat

The striped panchax is native to Peninsular India, where two largely disjunct populations are recognised: one along the Western Ghats (including Coorg, Wayanad, and Kerala) and one along the southeastern coast. The USFWS ecological risk screening notes that it has been lost from parts of its former southern range — including areas around Pune in Maharashtra — largely as a result of competition from introduced Gambusia (mosquitofish) and Poecilia species. Whether populations in Sri Lanka represent a genuine indigenous occurrence or introductions for mosquito control remains unconfirmed.

Within Peninsular India the species occupies an exceptionally broad range of habitats: highland streams and reservoirs at considerable altitude, lowland rivers, paddy fields, roadside ditches, swamps, wells, and even mildly brackish coastal waters. This ecological flexibility — shared with few other killifishes — is part of what has made it both successful as a native species and effective as a biological control agent when introduced into new water bodies. It is almost always found at or near the surface, in shallow, often still or slow-moving water with abundant emergent and floating vegetation.

Water chemistry parameters reported from wild and captive populations span pH 6.5–7.0 and hardness of 3–13 dGH, with temperature tolerance ranging from about 68–77 °F under aquarium conditions; FishBase records a natural range of 72–77 °F. The species is notably tolerant of brackish conditions, a trait uncommon in freshwater killies.

Feeding

Aplocheilus lineatus is a surface carnivore. The upturned mouth and flattened head are morphological commitments to feeding at the air-water interface, and in the wild the diet consists principally of insects — both those that fall onto the water surface and aquatic larvae that ascend to breathe — as well as small crustaceans and other invertebrates encountered near the surface. This efficient insect predation underlies its long history of use in mosquito larva control in India and beyond.

In the aquarium the fish feeds with equal enthusiasm on a wide range of offerings: live or frozen mosquito larvae, daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm are all taken readily. It will also accept floating dried foods of appropriate size, including flakes and small pellets, though a diet based too heavily on dried foods tends to diminish colour compared with a mixed live and frozen regimen. Smaller tankmates are at genuine risk from a well-grown individual — the gape is wide relative to the body size, and anything up to roughly a third of the fish's own length is a potential meal.

Mating

Aplocheilus lineatus is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. Unlike the annual killies of Africa and South America that bury eggs in peat and rely on diapause to carry populations through dry-season desiccation, the striped panchax inhabits permanent or near-permanent waters and spawns continuously over an extended season, depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs onto fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, floating plant roots, or spawning mops over weeks to months.

Males are persistently assertive in the presence of females. Courtship involves the male driving and displaying alongside a female, spreading his fins and intensifying his iridescent colouration. Spawning takes place near the surface: the pair orient side by side and eggs are expelled and fertilised in a brief press, with the eggs adhering immediately to whatever plant material or fibres are nearby. Breeding pairs scatter eggs continuously rather than releasing a large clutch in one event — a low-key but effective strategy in a fish that can live three years or more and breed across multiple seasons.

Breeding

Eggs are deposited singly or in small numbers on fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, and are adhesive enough to cling without falling. Incubation at typical aquarium temperatures (72–77 °F) takes 12–14 days, after which the fry emerge fully formed and immediately surface-oriented. There is no egg diapause — development proceeds directly without any dry period or temperature shock requirement, which makes the striped panchax far simpler to breed than annual killies.

In an aquarium setting the easiest approach is to provide a dense floating spawning mop or a clump of java moss near the surface. Eggs and mops can be removed every week or two and incubated separately in a small container; the parents will continue spawning in the main tank. The fry are relatively large at hatching and accept finely crushed flake or small live foods (micro-worms, baby brine shrimp nauplii) from the start. Growth is moderately fast under good conditions. Adults are persistent predators of their own fry and of eggs they encounter, so separation is essential for meaningful yield.

In the aquarium

The striped panchax has been in the hobby for well over a century and remains one of the most widely available Asian killifishes, in part because the gold wonder morph bred true enough to reach mass-market ornamental channels. It is a hardy and undemanding fish within a reasonable range of conditions — pH 6.5–7.0, hardness 3–13 dGH, temperature 68–77 °F — and tolerates the mild water quality fluctuations that might stress more sensitive species.

The non-negotiable requirement is a tight-fitting lid: like all surface-oriented panchax killifishes, Aplocheilus lineatus is an accomplished jumper and will find any gap. The aquarium should be spacious enough to allow the fish to occupy the full upper water column; a minimum footprint of 31.5 in is suggested for a small group. Tankmates must be chosen carefully — anything small enough to be swallowed will be. Medium-sized, robust fish that occupy the mid and lower water column work better than small surface dwellers or delicate community species. The fish is generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish that do not look like prey.

Groups of five or more individuals work well, reducing the intensity of male-male interactions by distributing attention. Densely planted tanks with floating vegetation suit the species biologically and aesthetically, giving it cover, spawning sites, and a naturalistic surface to patrol. It is a diurnal species and shows best under good lighting that brings out the full metallic play of the flanks.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Aplocheilus lineatus as Least Concern in an assessment dated 1 October 2009, reflecting its broad distribution across Peninsular India and its adaptability to a wide range of degraded habitats. That broad tolerance — the ability to persist in rice paddies, roadside ditches, and brackish backwaters — means the species as a whole is not immediately threatened at the species level.

Nevertheless, the USFWS ecological risk screening documents a meaningful range contraction: populations around Pune in Maharashtra and likely other areas of southern India have been lost or severely reduced, primarily due to competition from introduced Gambusia affinis and Poecilia reticulata. The irony is pointed — introduced precisely because they were thought to outcompete the panchax at mosquito control — neither Gambusia nor Poecilia has proved reliably superior for that purpose, while the ecological damage to native surface-dwelling fish communities, including Aplocheilus lineatus, has been lasting. The species has itself been introduced to water bodies far outside its native range for mosquito control, generating the same dynamic in reverse.

The two disjunct populations within India — the Western Ghats group and the southeastern coastal population — may warrant attention as distinct conservation units, particularly as development pressure and water abstraction intensify across the Western Ghats. The 2009 IUCN assessment is now more than fifteen years old; a reassessment with current range and population data would provide a clearer picture of the status of each regional population.
