Austrofundulus transilis is a pale, soft-water annual killifish from the seasonal llanos pools of Venezuela's Orinoco basin, described by George S. Myers in 1932 from type specimens collected in Estado Guárico. It stands out among its genus for its remarkably plain colouration — the body carries almost none of the dark blotches, spots, or bars that distinguish most other Austrofundulus — while males in peak condition develop richly tinted fins ranging from pink to burnt orange. Like all true annual killies, it is built around a single wet season: adults spawn into the soft bottom substrate before their pools dry, the embryos arrest development underground through the drought, and the next generation hatches when rains return the following year.

Taxonomy & naming

Austrofundulus transilis was described by George S. Myers in 1932, with the type series collected from temporary pools in Estado Guárico, Venezuela, within the Orinoco llanos. The genus Austrofundulus was established to accommodate South American annual killifishes of the family Rivulidae (sensu lato) that are closely allied to the Venezuelan and Colombian llanos fauna; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the name as valid under the authority Myers, 1932.

The specific epithet transilis is Latin, meaning 'passing over' or 'leaping across', likely alluding to the fish's capacity to persist across the annual dry season through its buried, diapausing eggs — it effectively 'crosses' the period of complete pool desiccation in embryonic form. The genus name Austrofundulus combines the Latin australis (southern) with fundulus, a reference to both geography and the fish's affinities with the North American fundulid killies.

Taphorn and Thomerson (1975, 1992) provided foundational ecological and distributional data for Venezuelan annual killies including A. transilis, noting its distinctiveness within the genus and documenting its range more precisely through the 1970s and 1980s. The species had not entered hobby circulation at the time of Taphorn and Thomerson's 1975 paper but was known to the scientific community through museum material.

Morphology

Austrofundulus transilis reaches approximately 4 in total length at maximum (FishBase), making it a relatively large annual killifish; wild males recorded by Thomerson and Taphorn (1992) averaged around 2 in TL, while females were notably smaller at roughly 1 in TL — a pronounced size dimorphism typical of the genus. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with a rounded head profile and the upturned mouth characteristic of surface- and midwater-feeding rivulids.

The species' most immediately striking feature is what it lacks: the scattered dark blotches, spots, and bars that mark other Austrofundulus species are essentially absent in A. transilis, giving it an unusually pale, clean appearance. The base colouration is light tan to cream with a faint iridescence on the flanks. Males in good condition show vivid colour in the unpaired fins — the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins develop hues ranging from pink through to burnt orange — but this pigment is condition-dependent and fades readily in captivity to a uniform grey. Females are paler throughout and lack the fin coloration.

Meristic data from FishBase record 30–33 lateral scales, 12–15 dorsal fin rays (typically 13), and scales covering the basal third of the caudal fin, consistent with other large-bodied Austrofundulus.

Habitat

Austrofundulus transilis is endemic to the Orinoco basin of Venezuela, where it inhabits the vast seasonal floodplain known as the Llanos — one of South America's most dramatic annual wetland cycles. The species has been documented from Estado Guárico (the type locality) and Estado Cojedes, and survey work through the late 1980s found it more commonly distributed across additional llanos sites than early records suggested.

The habitat is seasonal and ephemeral by definition: shallow depressions, pools, and low-lying grassland areas that fill with the May–November rainy season and desiccate entirely during the December–April dry season. The substrate in these pools is typically soft clay or muddy peat, which is the physical medium in which the species' drought-resistant eggs are deposited and buried. Water chemistry in these pools is soft and slightly acidic: Taphorn and Thomerson (1975, 1992) recorded pH values of 5.5–6.5, consistent with the organic-rich, ion-poor soils of the llanos.

Temperature in llanos pools can be warm, particularly in shallows exposed to direct sun during the late wet season. FishBase records a working temperature range of 75–90 °F, and Thomerson and Taphorn (1992) noted that aquarium specimens preferred the low 80s °F (approximately 81–82 °F). The fish co-occurs with other annual killifish of the Venezuelan llanos and shares the extraordinary seasonal rhythm of that ecosystem.

Feeding

In the wild, Austrofundulus transilis is primarily a midwater plankton feeder, with Thomerson and Taphorn (1992) specifically noting a specialisation on cladocerans (water fleas such as Daphnia) that are rich in carotenoid pigments. This diet is thought to be a key driver of the vivid orange-to-red fin coloration in wild males, since carotenoids are acquired through the food chain and cannot be synthesised de novo — captive fish losing colour on carotenoid-poor diets is a direct consequence of this dietary dependence.

In the aquarium, A. transilis feeds readily on live and frozen Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and other small invertebrate foods. Offering Daphnia as a regular component of the diet is the most effective way to maintain or restore the orange fin coloration in males. The species feeds actively in midwater and at the surface; it is not a bottom-grazer. Thomerson and Taphorn (1992) reported that aquarium individuals fed well and remained active.

Mating

Austrofundulus transilis is a true annual killifish with a substrate-spawning mating system centred on diapausing buried eggs. In the wild, spawning occurs during the wet season in the soft-bottomed pools of the llanos, and the mating behaviour involves the male driving the female toward and then into the substrate — typically soft mud or a peat layer — where eggs are deposited. The pair dive briefly into the bottom material during spawning, with the eggs left buried rather than attached to vegetation or scattered in open water.

Taphorn and Thomerson (1992) noted that A. transilis displays breeding behaviour described as 'interesting' and distinct from some other annual species, though the fish shares the fundamental annual substrate-spawning mode of the genus. Males are active and competitive; in a group situation dominant males display to females and court actively. The species is prolific under good aquarium conditions, suggesting a high spawning rate consistent with the short wild lifespan.

Breeding

The annual life cycle of Austrofundulus transilis is driven by the predictable desiccation of its pool habitat. After spawning, eggs are buried in the substrate and undergo diapause — a programmed arrest of embryonic development that allows survival through weeks or months of complete desiccation. When rains return and the pool refills, hatching is triggered by re-hydration; the embryos resume development and hatch into fully formed fry capable of feeding almost immediately. The entire adult generation is lost during the dry season; the species persists exclusively as buried eggs in the soil.

In the aquarium, the standard technique mimics this cycle: adults are spawned on a layer of soft peat or coco-peat substrate at the bottom of a shallow container. The peat is then removed, gently squeezed to remove excess water but left moist (not dry), and stored in a sealed bag or container at room temperature — typically 75–82 °F — for a diapause period of approximately four months, as recorded by FishBase. After this rest period the peat is re-wetted by flooding with soft, slightly acidic water, and fry hatch over the following days. Fry are larger than those of non-annual species and can take newly hatched Artemia nauplii almost immediately, growing rapidly in warm, food-rich water.

The four-month recommended incubation aligns with the length of the dry season in the Venezuelan llanos and represents the minimum diapause period; extending storage by several additional weeks generally improves hatch rates. FishBase notes that the species is rated as difficult in the aquarium, reflecting the need for correct diapause management rather than any particular fragility of the fish themselves.

In the aquarium

Austrofundulus transilis entered hobby awareness relatively late; it was absent from hobby collections at the time of Taphorn and Thomerson's 1975 survey of Venezuelan annual killies, though subsequent records suggest it appeared in specialist killifish circles by the late 1970s. British Killifish Association literature from 1976 onward includes A. transilis among species of interest, and it has since been maintained by annual killifish specialists in Europe and North America.

The species is best kept in a dedicated annual killifish setup: a species tank of modest size with a soft-substrate spawning medium (peat or coco-peat), soft and slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, low hardness, 75–82 °F), and live or frozen invertebrate foods rich in carotenoids to sustain male colour. It is a lively, active fish and males can be aggressive toward each other; a single pair or a trio (one male, two females) is a manageable starting point. A tight-fitting cover is advisable, as active killies will jump.

FishBase rates the species as difficult to maintain, which in practical terms means the diapause cycle must be managed correctly — improperly stored eggs that are kept too wet or at incorrect temperatures will fail to hatch, and fry rearing requires appropriate first foods and stable warm conditions. For hobbyists already experienced with annual killifish, A. transilis is a rewarding species: prolific, active, and capable of displaying striking orange fin colour when fed appropriately.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Austrofundulus transilis as Least Concern (LC) in a 2020 assessment (recorded by FishBase as assessed 16 November 2020), reflecting the species' presence across multiple sites in the Venezuelan llanos and the lack of evidence of a population decline sufficient to trigger a higher threat category. The Orinoco llanos are one of South America's largest savanna-wetland systems and remain broadly intact compared with more fragmented freshwater habitats elsewhere on the continent.

Nonetheless, the llanos ecosystem faces increasing pressure from agricultural expansion, particularly cattle ranching and soybean cultivation that drains and fills the seasonal pools on which annual killifishes depend. Infrastructure development and altered hydrology from upstream damming in the Orinoco drainage can disrupt the precise timing of wet-dry cycles that annual species rely upon for synchronised spawning and egg incubation. The species' dependence on temporary, ephemeral pools means it has no refuge in permanent water bodies if its habitat pools are permanently converted or chemically degraded.

Austrofundulus transilis appears to have a broader range within the llanos than some of the region's more narrowly endemic annual killies, which underpins the LC assessment. Continued monitoring of llanos pool habitats and their water quality and seasonal hydrology would be necessary to detect any future decline in populations of this and related annual species.
