Rachovia maculipinnis is a small annual killifish of the Orinoco basin, native to the seasonal floodplain pools and savanna wetlands of Colombia and Venezuela. Like all members of its genus, it is tuned to a calendar of flood and drought: adults spawn by burying eggs in the clay and mud of temporary pools, then die as the dry season claims the water; the embryos wait out the drought in diapause underground, hatching when the rains return months later. It is an undemanding species in skilled hands, rewarding killifish hobbyists with rapid growth and early breeding, but it demands the patience and technique of peat-based annual husbandry that annual killie keeping requires.

Taxonomy & naming

Rachovia maculipinnis was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1881, and the parenthetical authority reflects the fact that the species has since been moved from its original generic assignment. The valid combination Rachovia maculipinnis (Steindachner, 1881) is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), which is the governing authority for killifish nomenclature as for all teleosts.

The genus Rachovia belongs to the family Rivulidae, the New World killifishes, within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Rachovia is a small South American annual genus confined to the Orinoco drainage and its llanos tributaries. The specific epithet maculipinnis is Latin for 'spotted fin' (macula, spot; pinna, fin), alluding to the patterned finnage that characterises the males of this species.

Type localities documented in the hobbyist literature include Puerto Páez in Venezuela, the Guanare–Guanarito road in Venezuela, and Puerto López in the Río Meta basin of Colombia — all localities within the broad Orinoco system. Multiple collection points from different river drainages are known, and the species may show some geographic variation in colour pattern across its range.

Morphology

Rachovia maculipinnis is a slender, elongate killifish reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 2.5 in (FishBase), with males typically larger and more conspicuously patterned than females. The body form is the typical rivulid shape: cylindrical anteriorly, slightly compressed toward the caudal peduncle, with a slightly upturned mouth adapted for feeding at or near the water surface.

Males display the vivid colour of the genus: the body is crossed by bars or carries a mosaic of iridescent blue-green and reddish-brown markings, with spotted or patterned unpaired fins that give the species its Latin name. The caudal fin of mature males is often boldly marked and may carry extension rays. Females are significantly drabber — brownish or olive with faint barring — a pattern common across annual rivulids, where female crypsis is a survival advantage in shallow, exposed pools.

The scales are cycloid and the lateral line is absent or reduced, a feature widespread in the Rivulidae. Overall build is somewhat robust for an annual killi, consistent with the fast-growth strategy typical of species evolved for short-lived habitat.

Habitat

In the wild, Rachovia maculipinnis inhabits the seasonal pools, flooded savannas, and roadside ditches of the Orinoco llanos in Colombia and Venezuela — a vast tropical grassland that experiences extreme wet and dry seasons. During the rainy season the llanos floods extensively, creating vast networks of shallow standing water; as the dry season advances, these pools contract and eventually disappear entirely. The fish is adapted to thrive in and die with these temporary pools.

The substrate of its natural pools is typically clay or compacted mud, which holds moisture and allows eggs buried during spawning to survive the dry period protected from complete desiccation. The water is warm and shallow, with a temperature range of approximately 72–81 °F (FishBase). Hobbyist literature records the pH as near neutral, consistent with the clay-bottomed, non-blackwater pools of the Orinoco llanos. These are not the soft acidic blackwaters of the Amazon basin — the llanos soils buffer the water chemistry toward neutrality.

The pools may become very warm, turbid, and oxygen-depleted during the dry season's final days before disappearing, but by that time the adult fish have completed their reproductive work and are senescent; the surviving generation is entirely within the buried eggs.

Feeding

Rachovia maculipinnis is a carnivore feeding primarily on live invertebrates in the wild. The 'It Rains Fishes' hobbyist database records mosquito larvae and small insects as the core wild diet — prey types that are seasonally superabundant in the shallow, warm, productive pools of the Orinoco llanos. The upturned mouth is well suited to picking insects from the water surface film.

In captivity the species is readily maintained on a varied live and frozen diet: mosquito larvae (black and white), daphnia, artemia (brine shrimp), and micro-worms are accepted with enthusiasm. Frozen bloodworm is also taken. Dry food is not a dietary staple for this genus, and high-quality condition is best maintained with regular live or high-quality frozen invertebrate prey. The rapid growth rate characteristic of annual killies means that adequate, frequent feeding matters — juveniles in particular should be fed several small meals per day to reach breeding size in the hobby's accelerated breeding schedule.

Mating

Rachovia maculipinnis is an annual killifish that spawns by substrate-diving — the defining reproductive mode of the South American annual killifish. A breeding pair, stimulated by the presence of soft substrate and each other's courtship, dives together into the mud or peat at the bottom of the pool and releases eggs buried within it. This is not surface or plant spawning: the eggs are deposited within the substrate itself, where they are protected from exposure and predation.

Male courtship is vigorous and may involve lateral displays, fin-spreading, and chasing. In a tank with multiple males and females, dominant males will court actively. Because males can harass females aggressively in confined spaces, providing cover and separating females when not actively breeding is recommended. In nature the fleeting pool habitat and the broad shallows of the flooded llanos give females ample escape space from persistent males.

Breeding

The breeding protocol for Rachovia maculipinnis follows the standard annual killie method. A container of peat moss or coir (coconut fibre) is provided as the spawning medium — damp but not saturated, soft enough for the pair to dive. The fish are placed together over the peat and allowed to spawn over several sessions spanning days to weeks. After the spawning period, the peat is removed, gently squeezed of excess water, and stored in a sealed container or bag in a dark location at approximately 72–77 °F.

Incubation in peat storage takes typically 12–16 weeks under standard conditions, though It Rains Fishes notes that incubation can be accelerated to as little as 6 weeks by raising storage temperature toward 95 °F — a technique that risks reduced hatch rates if the eggs are not ready and must be used cautiously. The peat should be checked periodically for egg development; eggs are visible as round, amber-coloured spheres within the dark peat. When the incubation period is complete and embryos show fully formed eyes and a visible silver-blue body, the peat and eggs are submerged in shallow, aged water. Fry hatch within hours to a day of re-wetting.

Juveniles grow with remarkable speed. It Rains Fishes records that young fish can reach spawning size and condition in as little as six weeks from hatching — a consequence of the annual life history strategy in which reproductive opportunity is brief and selection rewards early maturity. Fry are large enough at hatching to take baby brine shrimp nauplii immediately, and growth accelerates with regular small feedings. Females should be separated from males once sexes are distinguishable to control breeding pace and reduce female stress.

In the aquarium

Rachovia maculipinnis is kept almost exclusively by specialist killifish hobbyists, particularly those with an interest in South American annuals. It is not a community fish: its care revolves entirely around the breeding cycle, and its short adult lifespan — typically under one year in the wild — means the keeper must manage egg incubation and fry-rearing as a continuous process to maintain a colony.

The species is housed in small tanks of 5.5–10 US gal, typically with a dark substrate or bare bottom over a container of peat for spawning. Water at pH near neutral and 72–81 °F suits it well. A secure lid is essential. It is best kept as a pair or trio (one male, one or two females) rather than in groups, to limit male aggression. Given the short adult lifespan, the focus of keeping this species is on successful egg incubation and regular fry production — the tank is as much an incubator management system as a display aquarium.

The species is not commonly encountered in the general trade but is distributed among killifish clubs and specialist breeders. The American Killifish Association (AKA) and affiliated national societies are the primary sources of material. Sharing eggs packed in moist peat sent through the mail is the standard distribution method within the killifish hobby.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rachovia maculipinnis as Least Concern (LC) in 2021, with the formal assessment published in November 2020 by assessors including Villa-Navarro, Usma, DoNascimiento, Taphorn, Rodríguez-Olarte, and Herrera-Collazos. The LC designation reflects a reasonably wide distribution across the Orinoco llanos of Colombia and Venezuela and the absence of evidence for a population decline severe enough to trigger a threatened category.

Nonetheless, the llanos seasonal pool habitat that sustains this species is under long-term pressure. Agricultural conversion of floodplain grasslands, drainage for cattle ranching, and water diversion for irrigation all reduce the availability of the temporary wetland pools on which annual killifishes depend. Seasonal pools are invisible on land-use maps and lack the conservation profile of permanent water bodies, making them easy to drain or fill without triggering regulatory review.

Introduced species — particularly common mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis and related species), which are widespread across tropical South America as biocontrol agents — can reach and colonise seasonal pools that refill after the rains and prey heavily on the small fry of annual killies. Climate variability also poses a risk: a shorter or irregular rainy season reduces the window available for adult fish to complete their breeding before pools dry, potentially cutting the number of clutches laid per season. While Rachovia maculipinnis is not immediately threatened, the long-term security of llanos annual killies as a group depends on the integrity of seasonal wetland hydrology across the Orinoco watershed.
