Taxonomy & naming
Terranatos dolichopterus was described by Stanley H. Weitzman and John P. Wourms in 1967 from material collected in Venezuela, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Terranatos dolichopterus (Weitzman & Wourms, 1967), placing it as the sole species in the monotypic genus Terranatos within the family Rivulidae (South American annual killifishes). The parenthetical authority indicates that the species has been moved from its original generic placement since description.
The genus name Terranatos is a compound of the Latin terra (earth, land) and the Greek natos or natans (swimmer), alluding to the terrestrial egg-resting phase that defines annual killifish biology — the eggs literally rest in the earth through the dry season. The specific epithet dolichopterus derives from the Greek dolichos (long) and pteron (wing or fin), a direct reference to the dramatically elongated dorsal fin of the mature male, the most immediately striking feature of the species.
Within Rivulidae, Terranatos is placed among the South American annuals, a group that includes the popular genera Austrolebias, Nothobranchius (African), and Pterolebias among others. Phylogenetic analyses of the rivulid radiation situate Terranatos within the Venezuelan–Colombian seasonal pool fauna, sister to genera occurring across the Orinoco and upper Amazon drainage systems. No subspecies or formally named populations are recognised.
Morphology
Terranatos dolichopterus is a small annual killifish; males typically reach 1.5–2 in total length in the wild and in the aquarium, females somewhat smaller at 1–1.5 in. The body form is robust and deep-chested relative to other rivulids, the profile somewhat reminiscent of a compressed cichlid rather than the slender cylindrical shape of, say, Nothobranchius. The head is large with a wide, upturned mouth well-suited to surface feeding.
The defining feature of the species is the male dorsal fin: in fully mature males the fin rays are greatly elongated, the anterior rays especially so, producing a curved, sail- or saber-like structure that is roughly as long as the fish's body. The anal fin is also enlarged and flag-like, though not to the same extreme degree. These finnage extensions are absent or rudimentary in females, which are cryptically coloured in olive-brown with dark mottling — camouflage suited to the shallow, vegetation-fringed pools they inhabit. Males in breeding condition display vivid iridescent blue and green on the flanks, the scales reflecting metallic sheens that shift with the angle of light, punctuated by rows of red-orange spots or reticulations; the extended fins carry matching iridescent elements.
Habitat
The saberfin killifish is native to Venezuela, occurring in the seasonal grassland pools and temporary ponds of the llanos — the vast tropical savanna floodplain that spreads across western Venezuela and eastern Colombia between the Andes foothills and the Orinoco main channel. These habitats are defined by extreme seasonal hydrology: heavy rains from May through October fill shallow pan-pools, roadside ditches, cattle wallows, and grass-covered depressions to depths that may be only 4–12 in, while the dry season (November through April) evaporates them entirely, leaving cracked mud and the buried eggs of the next generation.
The water chemistry of llanos seasonal pools is generally soft and moderately acidic to neutral, reflecting rainfall-derived water collecting in shallow basins over sandy or clay substrates with little buffering capacity. Temperatures are warm throughout the rainy season, typically 75–82 °F, and dissolved oxygen is often low in the dense aquatic vegetation that colonises the pools rapidly after inundation. Terranatos dolichopterus shares this habitat with other annual rivulids, small characins, and the larval stages of frogs and invertebrates — the ephemeral pool fauna of a seasonally pulsed ecosystem.
No formal range surveys have been published that delineate the precise distribution of Terranatos dolichopterus across the llanos, but it has been collected from localities in the Venezuelan states of Apure, Barinas, and Cojedes — the heartland of the Orinoco llanos system. Given the high habitat specificity (seasonal, shallow, soft-water pools) and the patchy distribution of suitable sites, the effective range may be considerably more restricted than the extent of the llanos biome would suggest.
Feeding
Like most small rivulids, Terranatos dolichopterus is an opportunistic micro-predator. In the wild it feeds on the abundant invertebrate fauna of seasonal pools: mosquito larvae, small crustaceans, chironomid midge larvae, copepods, cladocerans, and other zooplankton that bloom rapidly in newly inundated pools. The upturned mouth position is well-suited to surface and near-surface feeding, and the species likely takes terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface as well.
In the aquarium, the saberfin readily accepts live and frozen foods — mosquito larvae (an obvious staple), Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, cyclops, bloodworm, and similar invertebrate prey. Dry foods are accepted by well-conditioned individuals but live and frozen alternatives produce faster growth and better colour expression. Feeding should be varied and regular; in the compressed annual lifecycle there is no seasonal pause in feeding, and good nutrition translates directly into egg production and fin development.
Mating
Terranatos dolichopterus is a substrate-spawning annual killifish: the pair spawns not among plants or in open water but by driving directly into and depositing eggs within soft substrate — peat moss, mud, or the detritus-rich bottom sediments of the seasonal pool. This diving behaviour is the defining reproductive act of the South American and African annual killifishes and is entirely distinct from the plant-spawning strategy of non-annual killifishes such as Aphyosemion or Fundulopanchax.
Males display intensely to females, spreading the enlarged dorsal and anal fins to their maximum extent and presenting the iridescent flanks in lateral displays. Competition between males is vigorous given the compressed reproductive window available before the pool dries; dominant males with the most developed finnage presumably secure the majority of matings. The male courts the female and, when she is receptive, the pair align side by side, then press downward together into the substrate, releasing a small number of eggs per dive — typically one to a few eggs per spawning act, with repeated dives over the course of minutes to hours constituting a full spawning session.
The eggs are large relative to body size, with a tough, adhesive chorion suited to resist mechanical disturbance and desiccation during the resting phase. They are deposited several millimetres into the peat or mud and covered as the substrate collapses around them.
Breeding
In the wild, spawning occurs throughout the rainy season as long as the pool persists. When the pool dries, the adult fish perish — the generation is complete — and the buried eggs enter diapause, an arrested developmental state in which metabolic processes are radically slowed to survive complete desiccation of the surrounding substrate. The eggs can remain viable in dry or semi-dry peat for months. When the rains return and the pool refills, the eggs resume development and hatch within days to weeks, producing a new generation of fry that must grow to reproductive maturity before the next dry season eliminates the pool again.
In the hobby, Terranatos dolichopterus is bred on peat moss or coir fibre substrates laid several centimetres deep on the aquarium floor. After a spawning period of four to six weeks, the substrate is removed and gently squeezed to remove excess water, then stored slightly damp in a sealed bag or container at room temperature for three to six months — this replicates the dry-season diapause. The storage period can vary; killifish keepers often extend storage to ensure complete diapause and synchronised hatching. When the storage period is complete the peat is placed in a shallow container and soft, slightly acidic water is added: fry typically hatch within 24–72 hours of wetting. The fry are large enough on hatching to accept Artemia nauplii and grow rapidly. Multiple spawning batches can be collected and stored simultaneously, extending the breeding output of a pair beyond a single session.
In the aquarium
The saberfin killifish is a specialist fish — it is rarely available in general fish shops but is maintained and exchanged through killifish society networks, notably the American Killifish Association (AKA) and regional equivalents in Europe. Its care is not difficult for an experienced killifish keeper, but the annual lifecycle, peat-spawning requirement, and egg-storage protocol make it a poor choice for a casual aquarist.
A pair or trio (one male, two females) can be maintained comfortably in a small, well-planted aquarium of 10–15 US gal with a tight-fitting lid — killies are strong jumpers and will exit any gap without hesitation. Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.2, low to moderate hardness) and warm (75–81 °F). Dense surface cover of floating plants reduces stress and encourages natural behaviour; the male's extended fins are vulnerable to fin-nipping if housed with unsuitable companions, and the species is best kept as a species tank or with small, non-aggressive dither fish of similar size. The peat spawning medium should be offered permanently or on a regular rotation so that the fish can spawn freely.
The vivid colour and extraordinary fin extension of the mature male make Terranatos dolichopterus one of the more striking display fish within the annual killifish community, and its modest size makes it manageable even for hobbyists with limited space. The obligation to manage the egg storage and hatching cycle is the main commitment — an annual schedule that killifish enthusiasts typically integrate naturally into their maintenance routine.
Conservation
Terranatos dolichopterus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its native habitat — the seasonal llanos pool systems of Venezuela — faces significant and ongoing degradation. The Venezuelan llanos are one of the most heavily grazed and agriculturally exploited tropical grassland systems in South America: cattle ranching has been the dominant land use for centuries, and the drainage of seasonal pools to extend pasture or create reservoirs directly eliminates the ephemeral water bodies that annual killifishes depend on. More recently, expansion of cultivated agriculture and, in some areas, oil extraction infrastructure, has further fragmented and degraded the mosaic of seasonal pools across Apure, Barinas, and adjacent states.
For a species with the life history of Terranatos dolichopterus — an annual with no persistent adult population, entirely dependent on pool refilling, and with a distribution tied to specific soil and hydrological conditions — even localised pool drainage can eliminate a population permanently. Seasonal pools do not self-restore once their hydrology is altered; the eggs buried in the substrate cannot survive indefinitely, and a pool that fails to fill for two or three consecutive seasons is functionally lost. The hobby population maintained through AKA and European killifish networks constitutes a meaningful insurance population; killifish societies have a long tradition of stewarding rare annual species through egg-exchange programmes that keep captive lines alive even when wild populations face pressure.
