Taxonomy & naming
The name Cynolebias ladigesi was applied by Meinken (1951) to a population of small annual killifish from Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. As killifish taxonomy was refined through detailed morphological and later molecular work, it became clear that ladigesi fell within the variable species Notholebias minimus (Myers, 1942), making it a junior synonym. Foersch (1958) subsequently described what he believed to be a further new entity under the name Cynolebias ladigesi in the aquarium literature, though this too was eventually recognised as synonymous with minimus. Weitzman (1962) clarified the nomenclatural history in a short communication explaining how the name ladigesi had come to be applied. The valid name under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Notholebias minimus (Myers, 1942).
The genus Notholebias was erected by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2008 following his comprehensive redescription of what had been treated as the genus Leptolebias. Costa's analysis resolved four species in the genus — Notholebias minimus, N. cruzi, N. fractifasciatus, and N. vermiculatus — all of them small, highly threatened annual killies from the Atlantic forest drainages of south-eastern Brazil. The name minimus is Latin for 'smallest' or 'least', an apt description for a fish that seldom exceeds 1.5 in standard length and is one of the most diminutive members of its tribe.
Hobby literature and databases still index this fish under the slug cynolebias-ladigesi and the name C. ladigesi, reflecting decades of aquarium trade usage. The IUCN assessment and FishBase both list the species under the valid combination Notholebias minimus, and that is the name used in the primary scientific literature.
Morphology
The barredtail pearlfish is a small, deep-bodied annual killifish reaching a maximum of approximately 1–1.5 in standard length (FishBase). The body is laterally compressed, more so than many South American annuals of comparable size, giving males in particular a jewel-like, almost disc-shaped profile. Meristically the species carries thirteen rays in the dorsal fin (D13) and eighteen in the anal fin (A18), counts typical of the Notholebias assemblage.
Males are strikingly coloured: the flanks display rows of iridescent blue-green or turquoise spots — the 'pearl' pattern that gives the broader group its vernacular name — overlaid on a darker ground colour that can range from olive to deep blue-grey. The caudal fin shows the banded pattern that inspired the common name barredtail pearlfish, with alternating dark and light vertical bars. Females are considerably plainer, showing brownish or tan ground colour with less developed spotting and no bold caudal banding, a typical sexual dichromatism in the genus. The body of both sexes is covered in ctenoid scales, and the jaws are relatively upturned for surface and mid-water feeding in shallow pools.
Habitat
Notholebias minimus occurs in temporary seasonal pools within the Atlantic forest ecoregion of Rio de Janeiro State, south-eastern Brazil. The type locality is 1 mile east of Itaguaí (the former spelling Itaquahy appears in older literature), and documented collection sites include Seropedica and Inoã in the municipality of Maricá, with at least one additional population designated NSC-2 from a locality not precisely recorded in early accounts. These populations represent isolated pockets of habitat within a heavily modified coastal lowland landscape.
The pools themselves are small, shallow, and characterised by dark, soft, acidic water — the result of decomposing leaf litter and peat-rich substrates in the lowland Atlantic forest environment. FishBase records temperature 68–72 °F, pH around 6, and hardness below 10 dGH, consistent with the soft, slightly acidic blackwater conditions typical of such pools. Aquatic vegetation is sparse to absent; the substrate is soft mud and detritus, into which the fish bury their eggs. The pools dry out completely in the dry season, killing all adult fish and leaving the population's future entirely within those buried, diapausing eggs.
Feeding
Like all members of the South American annual killifish assemblage, the barredtail pearlfish is a carnivore in the wild, exploiting the invertebrate fauna that blooms alongside the fish when seasonal rains refill the pools. The diet in nature consists primarily of small aquatic invertebrates — copepods, cladocerans, midge larvae, and similar microcrustaceans and insect larvae — which dominate the fauna of the temporary pools it inhabits. The fish is a visual, active hunter adapted to feeding in clear to darkly stained shallow water.
In captivity the species accepts a wide range of small live and frozen foods, including Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, Cyclops, micro-worms, and similar offerings. The small mouth limits prey size; foods should be matched to the fish's gape. Dried foods may be taken by established individuals but live and frozen invertebrate foods produce the best condition and colouration in males. The species must be kept separate from larger tankmates that would compete aggressively for food.
Mating
Notholebias minimus is an annual killifish with the substrate-spawning reproductive strategy that defines the South American annual killi guild. Spawning takes place in the soft substrate — mud, peat, or detritus — at the bottom of the seasonal pool. A male courts a receptive female through lateral displays that expose his iridescent flanks and banded caudal fin, driving off rival males in the process. When the female accepts courtship, the pair orient side by side and dive together into the soft substrate, releasing eggs and sperm simultaneously while partially buried.
The mating season is compressed by the temporary nature of the habitat: fish hatch when the rains return, grow rapidly to sexual maturity within weeks, spawn intensively throughout the pool's wet-season duration, and die as the pool dries. There is no pair bond and no parental investment beyond the act of egg deposition itself. Males compete intensely in the confined space of a drying pool, and condition can deteriorate quickly; hobbyists typically condition pairs or trios separately and introduce them to the spawning medium for brief, supervised sessions to reduce wear on the female.
Breeding
The eggs of Notholebias minimus are deposited in the substrate and left entirely without parental care. They enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — that allows them to survive the complete desiccation of the pool during the dry season. FishBase records an incubation period of approximately 10 months under diapause conditions, among the longest documented for any South American annual killi and a reflection of the long dry seasons experienced in the Rio de Janeiro coastal lowlands.
In the hobby, breeding follows the standard protocol for South American annual killies. A peat or coir substrate of 2–3 in depth is provided in the spawning tank; the pair or trio is introduced for several days to weeks; the moist substrate is then removed, gently squeezed to remove excess water, sealed in a bag or container with a small air pocket, labelled with the collection date, and stored at room temperature for the appropriate diapause period — commonly 4–6 months as a minimum trial, with hatching sometimes not occurring until 8–10 months for fully ripe eggs. The substrate is then moistened with aged, slightly acidic soft water, and fry should appear within 24–72 hours. First foods are Artemia nauplii and micro-worms; the fry grow quickly and sex differences become apparent within the first month.
In the aquarium
The barredtail pearlfish is a specialist species best suited to the dedicated killi hobbyist. Its small size (under 1.5 in SL) means it can be maintained in modest aquaria of 5.5–10 US gal, but it requires careful attention to water quality and chemistry. The target parameters follow the wild habitat: soft water (below 10 dGH), a pH near 6, and cool temperatures of 68–72 °F — warmer conditions accelerate the compressed life cycle and shorten the animal's already brief lifespan. Slow, gentle filtration (a small air-driven sponge filter is ideal) maintains water quality without the turbulence that stresses these quiet-water fish.
Because Notholebias minimus is so small and undemanding of space, a colony approach — maintaining multiple pairs in a purpose-built rack of small tanks or containers — suits the species well and is the approach used by specialist breeders keeping the captive population alive as the wild stocks decline. The aquarium environment should be dimly lit with a dark substrate and leaf litter or peat to mimic the tannin-stained pools of Rio de Janeiro's coastal lowlands. Males will display to one another and some fin-nipping occurs; providing visual barriers or keeping males in separate vessels reduces attrition.
Hobbyists working with this species bear a measurable conservation responsibility: Notholebias minimus is among the most endangered killifish in the Americas, and the captive population — coordinated in part through killifish associations such as the American Killifish Association — serves as an insurance population against the ongoing destruction of its wild habitat.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Notholebias minimus as Endangered (EN) under criterion B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv), with the assessment finalised on 7 November 2018. The listing reflects an extremely restricted range confined to the Atlantic coastal drainages of Rio de Janeiro State, a landscape under severe anthropogenic pressure. The species is known from only a handful of localities — Itaguaí, Seropedica, and Inoã (Maricá) among them — all within one of Brazil's most densely urbanised regions. The temporary pools that sustain each population are isolated from one another by roads, buildings, and degraded land; colonisation or recolonisation between sites is essentially impossible.
Habitat loss and fragmentation are the primary threats. The seasonal pools of the coastal Atlantic forest have been systematically drained, filled, and converted to agricultural and urban uses for decades. The small, dark pools used by this species have no economic value and receive no formal protection. Introduced species — particularly the Amazonian mosquitofish analogue and Poecilia reticulata — have been recorded in modified water bodies throughout the region and may impose additional predation pressure where pool boundaries have been breached or altered. The Costa (1988) monograph on the Cynolebias minimus complex documented the ecology of these populations before much of the surrounding habitat was lost, and the trajectory since then has been downward.
Notholebias minimus and its close relative N. fractifasciatus are considered the most threatened species in the genus. Conservation of either species depends on the identification and legal protection of surviving pool habitats, a difficult task given the fragmented ownership and low political profile of ephemeral freshwater habitats in south-eastern Brazil. The captive population maintained by specialist hobbyists and killifish societies worldwide provides a critical buffer, and the periodic exchange of stock between independent lines is essential to maintain genetic diversity in an animal with so few remaining wild individuals.
