Taxonomy & naming
Cynolebias microphthalmus was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa and Grasiela Brasil in 1995, and the valid name is recorded as such in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan). The species belongs to the genus Cynolebias, one of the classic South American annual killifish genera, placed within the subfamily Cynolebiatinae of the family Rivulidae. The Cynolebiatinae are the quintessential annual killies of South America, characterised by their seasonal lifestyle in temporary pools across the continent's seasonal lowlands.
The specific epithet microphthalmus is derived from the Greek mikros (small) and ophthalmos (eye), meaning 'small-eyed' — a reference to the comparatively reduced eye size noted in the original description. The genus name Cynolebias combines the Greek kyon (dog) and lebias, a term used historically for small cyprinid fishes, though its precise etymological intent in the genus name is debated. The type-locality reference for C. microphthalmus lies within the Jaguaribe drainage of Ceará state, north-eastern Brazil.
Morphology
Males of Cynolebias microphthalmus reach up to 4.5 in total length, making this one of the larger species in a genus that otherwise contains several diminutive forms; females are substantially smaller, with a standard length of approximately 2 in. The sexual size dimorphism is pronounced, as is typical across Cynolebias. Meristic data from FishBase record dorsal soft rays of 15–19 (males 17–19, females 15–17), anal soft rays of 18–21 (males 19–21, females 18–19), and a vertebral count of 35–36.
As in other Cynolebias, the body is robust and somewhat laterally compressed, with a rounded head profile and the relatively small eye that gives the species its name. Males display the bold, contrasty colouration characteristic of the genus — vivid body markings that function in mate attraction and male-male signalling within the brief breeding season. Females are cryptically patterned by comparison. The relatively large egg diameter of 0.5 in, documented by hobbyist sources, is consistent with the energy investment annual killies place in producing drought-resistant embryos capable of surviving months of desiccation.
Habitat
The species is restricted to the Jaguaribe river basin in Ceará state, north-eastern Brazil, with uncertain additional records from the Mossoró basin of Rio Grande do Norte. The Jaguaribe is the largest river basin entirely within Ceará and drains a landscape dominated by the Caatinga — the seasonally dry thorny scrubland biome unique to north-eastern Brazil. In this landscape, rainfall is sharply seasonal and unreliable; the pools and flooded depressions that Cynolebias microphthalmus inhabits may hold water for only a few months of the year.
The IUCN characterises the species' habitats as seasonal and intermittent inland wetlands and freshwater marshes — temporary pools that fill during the wet season and dry completely during the dry season. This drying cycle is not an obstacle but a prerequisite for the species' lifecycle: the eggs require a period of arrested development (diapause) in the dry substrate before they are competent to hatch. Water chemistry in Caatinga pools can be variable, with relatively warm temperatures reflecting the semi-arid climate of the region.
Feeding
Cynolebias microphthalmus is a predatory killifish, as expected for a relatively large annual species. In the wild, Cynolebias species take invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms — and, at larger sizes, small fishes and other vertebrates that share their temporary pools. The brief wet-season window creates intense competition for food, and rapid consumption drives the fast growth rate that allows these fish to mature, spawn, and die within a single season.
In captivity, hobbyist sources note a high food demand that the keeper must consistently meet for the fish to reach adulthood within its compressed timeline. Live and frozen foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, Artemia, earthworms, and similar meaty prey — are the staple. The high intake rate relative to other killifish is a direct consequence of the annual strategy: every calorie consumed translates directly into growth and reproductive investment within a lifespan measured in months.
Mating
Like all Cynolebias, C. microphthalmus is a substrate-spawning annual killifish in which the pair dive together into soft bottom material to deposit eggs. The mating behaviour follows the annual killifish pattern: males pursue females with displays and lateral presentations of their vivid colouration, then drive the chosen female downward into the substrate where the spawning act occurs with the pair partially buried. Eggs are deposited individually or in small batches with each dive.
Male competition is intense: in temporary pools with brief productive seasons, the pressure to fertilise eggs quickly is extreme. Hobbyist experience with the species recommends a ratio of one male to multiple large females, which both reduces male harassment of any single female and reflects the polygynous mating system typical of annual killies where males attempt to maximise fertilisations across many females during the short breeding season. A tank of at least 15 US gal with ample shelter is needed to buffer inter-individual aggression.
Breeding
The breeding biology of Cynolebias microphthalmus follows the diapause-obligate annual killifish mode. After spawning, the fertilised eggs are left buried in the substrate — in nature this is soft mud, peat, or organic detritus in the pool bottom — while the water evaporates. The embryos enter diapause, an arrested developmental state in which metabolism drops dramatically and the eggs resist desiccation for months. When rain returns and the pool refills, the eggs complete development and hatch, producing the next generation.
In captivity the keeper replicates this cycle using a spawning medium of coconut peat or a peat–clay mixture at neutral pH. After a spawning session, the medium is removed from the tank, lightly pressed to remove excess moisture, and stored in a sealed bag or container at room temperature for the incubation period — documented at approximately four to five months for this species. The bag is then re-wetted to trigger hatching. Egg diameter is 0.5 in, relatively large for a killifish, reflecting the yolk investment needed to sustain a diapausing embryo. Hobbyist sources emphasise that juveniles are cannibalistic toward smaller conspecifics, and fast-growing individuals must be separated promptly; this is a species not recommended for inexperienced killifish keepers.
In the aquarium
Cynolebias microphthalmus is a demanding but rewarding annual killifish suited to experienced hobbyists with prior annual-killie keeping experience. The compressed lifecycle means that errors in husbandry — underfeeding, improper substrate management, failure to incubate eggs correctly — cannot be corrected over a leisurely timeline: the fish that fails to thrive at three months will not recover, because its biological clock has already allocated most of its lifespan. Consistent, generous feeding with live or high-quality frozen foods is essential from the outset.
The recommended setup is a species or species-only tank of at least 15 US gal with a generous depth of coconut peat or similar spawning medium on the bottom and dense cover — floating plants, ceramic tubes, or similar shelter — to break lines of sight and allow females to escape persistent male attention. Water temperature in the 72–79 °F range is appropriate for a fish from the seasonally warm Caatinga zone; a short daily photoperiod mimicking the dry-season light regime can be used to condition the fish for spawning. The male's vivid colouration and the spectacle of the pair plunging into the substrate make this a visually engaging species in a well-set-up tank. The eggs recovered from each spawning cycle carry the genetic material of the population forward, and careful management of the peat medium between the seasons is among the most important skills the keeper develops.
Although not currently available in large numbers in the mainstream trade, C. microphthalmus circulates within killifish specialist clubs and associations, where collectors trade eggs and adults of rare Cynolebias as part of a broader effort to maintain populations outside the wild.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cynolebias microphthalmus as Least Concern (LC) in November 2018 (published 2022), based on a range that — while restricted to the Jaguaribe basin of Ceará and possibly the adjacent Mossoró drainage — was not considered to meet the quantitative thresholds for a threatened category at that assessment. The assessors noted that threats from agriculture and tourism were present but non-significant at the time of assessment, and no conservation programme was active for the species. No occurrences within formally protected areas were recorded.
The Least Concern status should not, however, suggest that the species is under no pressure. Cynolebias microphthalmus is an endemic of the Caatinga, a biome under severe and accelerating human pressure in north-eastern Brazil: agricultural expansion, livestock farming, water abstraction from rivers and seasonal reservoirs, and the progressive drying of the region associated with climate change all directly threaten the temporary wetland pools that annual killies require. The species has no recorded occurrence in protected areas, and many Cynolebias endemics with similarly restricted ranges in Brazil have proven vulnerable to localised habitat loss. The killifish specialist community, through egg and specimen exchange in clubs such as the American Killifish Association, maintains ex-situ populations that serve as an informal safety net for annual species whose wild habitats are at risk.
