Cynolebias albipunctatus is a South American annual killifish described by Costa & Brasil in 1991 from the São Francisco River basin of northeastern Brazil. A 2014 taxonomic revision by Wilson J.E.M. Costa and colleagues concluded that albipunctatus is a junior synonym of Cynolebias porosus (Steindachner, 1876), the type species of the genus, which remains endemic to the same Caatinga drainage. Whether treated as a valid species or resolved into porosus, the fish belongs to a group of seasonal pool-dwellers perfectly adapted to the Caatinga's brutal alternation of rain and drought — spawning into soft substrate before the pools dry, leaving behind diapausing eggs that wait out the dry season buried in mud, then hatch when the rains return.

Taxonomy & naming

Cynolebias albipunctatus was formally described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa and Gilberto Brasil in 1991, placed within the genus Cynolebias — a diverse assemblage of South American annual killifishes in the family Rivulidae, order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for valid names, and the most significant subsequent development for this species is the 2014 revision by Costa published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (25[1]:79–96). That paper described six new Cynolebias species from the São Francisco River basin and, critically, reappraised albipunctatus, treating it as a synonym of the much earlier Cynolebias porosus Steindachner, 1876 — the type species of the genus, originally described from Pernambuco (Recife). The São Francisco basin is thus the shared home of both names.

The genus Cynolebias currently comprises approximately 22 valid species (sensu post-2014 taxonomy), all endemic to the Brazilian Caatinga and its semi-arid drainage systems. The genus name combines the Greek kynos (dog) with lebias (a small fish), a naming convention applied broadly to Neotropical killifishes by early systematists. The specific epithet albipunctatus is Latin: albi- (white) + punctatus (spotted or dotted), describing the white spotting pattern on the male's dark body.

Morphology

Cynolebias albipunctatus is a small, deep-bodied annual killi characteristic of the genus. Males display the striking colour pattern encoded in the species name: a dark steel-blue to blackish ground colour set with a scattering of pale white or cream spots — a pattern that likely functions in male–male rivalry and mate attraction in the turbid, heavily vegetated seasonal pools the species occupies. Females and juveniles are considerably plainer, showing a cryptic brownish ground with less distinct spotting, as is typical across the genus.

The body form is compact and laterally compressed, with the deep profile and rounded fins seen in Cynolebias generally. Specific mensural data for albipunctatus are not separately published from the material that was subsequently referred to porosus; hobbyist and killifish-society records (AKA) list the species under Class 3 South American Annuals without independently citing a maximum length. General Cynolebias size range is modest — most species fall in the 1–3 in total length range — consistent with the shallow, ephemeral habitat and the rapid life-cycle imposed by seasonal desiccation.

Habitat

The Caatinga of northeastern Brazil is one of the world's most seasonally extreme tropical environments: a scrub-thorn biome where rainfall is highly variable, typically concentrated in three to four months, and where the sun-baked clay pans and temporary stream pools that form during rains evaporate completely during the long dry season. Cynolebias albipunctatus (and the broader C. porosus complex) inhabits these impermanent pools — shallow, often turbid bodies of water over soft mud and detritus, with a lush growth of aquatic macrophytes and filamentous algae during the wet phase.

The São Francisco River basin provides the hydrological backbone: Cynolebias in this drainage follow the flooding pulse of tributaries and the seasonally inundated floodplain margins rather than the permanent river channel itself. Water conditions during the wet phase are soft and slightly acid to near-neutral, warmed by the tropical sun. As the dry season advances, temperature extremes increase and the pools shrink; the adult fish die as the water disappears, leaving only the buried eggs to carry the lineage forward.

Feeding

Like all Cynolebias, albipunctatus is a carnivore in the wild, feeding opportunistically on whatever invertebrate prey the seasonal pools offer: mosquito larvae, small crustaceans, aquatic insects and their nymphs, worms, and occasionally very small fish. The short, intense wet season creates a pulse of invertebrate productivity that the fish must exploit rapidly to reach reproductive maturity before pool desiccation.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — artemia, chironomid (bloodworm), tubifex, and small Daphnia are staples for South American annual killies. Dried foods are accepted by some individuals once conditioned. Feeding frequency should be generous but not excessive: the metabolic pace of an annual killi is high, and good nutrition directly supports egg production in females and colour development in males.

Mating

Cynolebias albipunctatus is an annual, substrate-spawning killi. The spawning act is a diving plunge into soft substrate: the male courts the female with fin-spreading and lateral displays, then the pair position themselves side by side and dive together into the peat or mud bottom. Eggs are deposited singly or in small clutches during each dive, buried several centimetres below the surface where they are protected from physical disturbance and — crucially — from the desiccation that will eventually claim the entire pool above them.

Male Cynolebias typically establish small territories within the pool and pursue females actively. The colour contrast of spotted males against the murky Caatinga water is striking at close range; courtship is intense and can be rough on females, which is why hobbyists commonly maintain this group with a ratio of at least two or three females per male. Spawning can continue for weeks as long as conditioned adults and suitable substrate are present.

Breeding

The reproductive strategy of Cynolebias albipunctatus centres entirely on diapausing eggs — the mechanism that makes annual killies possible in an environment where no standing water persists year-round. Fertilised eggs buried in the substrate enter a state of developmental arrest (diapause), in which embryogenesis is suspended for weeks to months. Diapause is typically a staged process: most annual killi eggs pass through two or three discrete diapause phases before completing development, with transitions triggered by time, moisture, or temperature cues. This sequential diapause spreads the risk — not all eggs hatch at the first rainfall, so a false start is unlikely to eliminate the entire cohort.

In hobbyist practice, peat fibre or coconut coir is offered as the spawning medium. After a conditioning period of typically one to four months (varying by species and spawning temperature), the peat is dried slightly, packed into a labelled bag or container, and stored at room temperature in the dark for the appropriate diapause duration — often three to six months for Cynolebias. Re-wetting the peat with soft, slightly acid water triggers hatching within hours to days. Fry are large relative to typical killifish larvae and can take newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) immediately. Growth is rapid: the urgency of a creature racing the returning dry season is written into every stage of the life cycle. Wild fish may live less than a year; aquarium specimens in stable conditions often reach twelve to eighteen months.

In the aquarium

South American annual killies of the genus Cynolebias, including albipunctatus, are specialist fish kept primarily by dedicated killifish hobbyists organised through societies such as the American Killifish Association (AKA), where the species is listed under Class 3 — South American Annuals. They are not traded widely in general aquarium retail but circulate within the killifish community as eggs, typically packaged in moist peat for postal shipping — an arrangement that suits the eggs' natural biology perfectly.

A suitable setup is modest in size: a 20- to 40-litre tank per group is adequate. Water should be soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.0–7.0, low hardness), temperature in the range of 72–79 °F as recommended for the SAA group. A deep layer of peat or coconut-coir substrate — at least 2–3 in — is essential for natural spawning behaviour. Filtration should be gentle; strong currents are uncharacteristic of Caatinga pools. The tank need not be tall; Cynolebias are mid- to upper-water hunters that do not require vertical swimming space.

Males of most Cynolebias can be aggressive toward each other; maintaining multiple females per male reduces harassment of individual fish. Due to the annual life cycle, keepers must be prepared for the ongoing cycle of spawning, peat collection, egg storage, and re-wetting that defines the hobby experience with this group. The reward is a fast, vivid, intensely behaving fish whose life compresses an entire year of nature into months of aquarium observation.

Conservation

No IUCN Red List assessment is available for Cynolebias albipunctatus, and the 2014 synonymisation with C. porosus complicates the conservation picture: a named taxon that has been absorbed into another name falls off the assessment radar unless the absorbing species is itself evaluated. The broader genus Cynolebias is under significant pressure. Costa et al. (2014) specifically noted that at least two of the six new species described in that paper — C. obscurus and C. ochraceus — are immediately endangered, and the pattern of narrow endemism seen across the genus makes most Cynolebias inherently vulnerable.

The Caatinga is one of Brazil's most threatened biomes. It covers approximately 10 % of the country's land area and is subject to intense agricultural conversion, livestock grazing that degrades pool margins, water extraction for irrigation, and the downstream effects of São Francisco River basin management — including the São Francisco River Integration Project, which diverts water to the semi-arid northeast and alters seasonal flood dynamics. Annual killies are also susceptible to the introduction of mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) and tilapia into temporary pools, which prey on eggs and compete with adults. For a fish whose entire population may occupy a handful of isolated seasonal pools within a single sub-basin, the destruction of even one group of pools can constitute local extinction. The synonymisation of albipunctatus into porosus underscores the need for continued systematic and survey work in the Caatinga before more undescribed or recently described taxa are lost.
