The white fin pupfish is a small, hardy desert fish discovered in the high-elevation springs and ciénegas of northern Chihuahua, Mexico, and described scientifically only in 2002. Named for the striking white dorsal and anal fins that males display during breeding, Cyprinodon albivelis is endemic to two closely related drainage systems — the Lago de Guzmán complex basin and the upper Río Papígochic subbasin of the Pacific-slope Río Yaqui drainage — at elevations between 1,800 and 2,300 metres. Like many pupfishes, it occupies a narrow geographic footprint and is exquisitely adapted to warm, hard, alkaline spring water; its restricted range and specialised habitat make it potentially vulnerable to the agricultural and groundwater pressures that have devastated related species across the Chihuahuan Desert.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyprinodon albivelis was described by W. L. Minckley and Robert Rush Miller in 2002, in a paper published in Copeia that simultaneously named two other new pupfish from Chihuahua and Arizona. The type locality is Ojo de Palomas Viejo, 3 mi south of Las Palomas, Chihuahua, Mexico — a spring site in the upper Río Papígochic subbasin at approximately 2,048 metres elevation. A single disjunct occurrence in the Río Santa María basin was also recorded at the time of description.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) accepts Cyprinodon albivelis Minckley & Miller, 2002 as the valid name. The species sits within the large, diverse genus Cyprinodon — the pupfishes — in the family Cyprinodontidae. This genus encompasses several dozen species distributed across North America, the Caribbean, and northern South America, many of them highly localised endemics of desert springs and lakes. The closest relatives of C. albivelis within the genus have not been formally resolved by a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis at the time of description.

The specific epithet albivelis is formed from the Latin albus (white) and velum (sail or fin), meaning 'white-finned' — a direct reference to the vivid white dorsal and anal fin margins displayed by males in breeding dress. The common name white fin pupfish translates the Latin epithet directly into English.

Morphology

Cyprinodon albivelis is a small, deep-bodied pupfish reaching a maximum of around 2 in standard length (FishBase) — the original description records a largest specimen of 1.5 in SL (approximately 1.5 in total length). The body plan is typical of the genus: laterally compressed, somewhat stocky, with a rounded snout, a small upturned mouth, and the robust caudal peduncle characteristic of fishes that manoeuvre in fast currents around spring margins.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced and seasonally intensified. Breeding males develop a distinctive nuptial colouration consisting of 7–8 dark vertical bars on the flanks and, most distinctively, brilliantly white margins on the dorsal and anal fins — the feature that gives the species its common and scientific names. Females and non-breeding males are more subdued in colouration, lacking the crisp fin markings and showing less-defined barring. Males also attain greater body size and a more vivid general coloration during the breeding season, a pattern consistent across the pupfish genus.

Habitat

The white fin pupfish is restricted to two adjacent basin systems in northern Chihuahua at high elevations in the interior plateau. Its primary stronghold is the Lago de Guzmán complex basin — a system of endorheic (internally draining) lakes and associated spring marshes in the Chihuahuan Desert — with secondary records from the upper Río Papígochic subbasin, which drains westward to the Río Yaqui and ultimately to the Pacific. Elevations across the known range span roughly 1,800 to 2,300 metres, making this a cool-to-warm montane desert-spring fish rather than a lowland tropical species.

Within these basins the fish occupies a variety of wetland microhabitats: natural springs (including some with sulphurous character), spring-fed ciénegas (desert marshes), the vegetated shorelines of lakes and cutoff channels, ephemeral irrigation canals, and roadside ditches fed by spring overflow. The original description records the substrate at the type locality as clay, mud, and rock. Water chemistry from field collections shows warm (approximately 73–79 °F), moderately hard to hard, neutral to slightly alkaline water (pH approximately 7.5, hardness around 150 dH), consistent with carbonate-rich desert-spring chemistry — the opposite of the soft, acidic blackwater associated with many annual killifish from West Africa or South America.

The high-elevation distribution distinguishes C. albivelis from lowland Chihuahuan Desert pupfishes. Seasonal temperature variation at these elevations is likely more pronounced than in strictly subtropical springs, and the fish therefore experiences cooler winters than congeners near sea level.

Feeding

Field data from the original description records a diet consisting of small invertebrates and plant material — the typical broad omnivory of the pupfish genus. Like most Cyprinodon, C. albivelis is a grazer and picker rather than a pursuit predator: the upturned mouth and flat teeth are adapted for scraping algal films, picking up aquatic invertebrates from substrate surfaces, and ingesting organic detritus. FishBase notes insects and algae as primary dietary components for the species.

In the ciénega and spring habitats it occupies, food availability is likely dominated by periphyton (algal mats), chironomid and other midge larvae, ostracods, and small amphipods — the invertebrate community typical of high-elevation desert wetlands. The species' broad dietary tolerance across plant and animal material gives it the flexibility to exploit the variable productivity of its spring-fed habitats through seasonal fluctuations.

Mating

Cyprinodon albivelis is a non-annual pupfish: it inhabits permanent or near-permanent spring water and does not undergo a diapausing egg stage buried in substrate. Breeding males establish small territories around spring margins and vegetation patches, where they display vigorously to females and rival males. The white fin margins of the dorsal and anal fins — which are most intensely developed during the breeding season — function as a visual signal, both in inter-male competition and in female mate choice, a pattern consistent with what is known about nuptial colouration in other Cyprinodon.

The 7–8 dark vertical bars on the male's flanks, also intensified during breeding, provide additional contrast against the fins' white margins, producing a striking display pattern particularly visible in shallow, clear spring water. The mating system of the genus is generally understood to be polygynous, with dominant males monopolising territories and gaining disproportionate access to females, though the fine-scale mating dynamics of C. albivelis have not been formally studied.

Breeding

As a non-annual plant-spawner, Cyprinodon albivelis deposits adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or analogous surfaces in shallow water near spring margins. Eggs incubate in water without a diapause phase — they are not buried in substrate or dried, and development proceeds continuously through to hatching. This mode is characteristic of the genus Cyprinodon as a whole, which is not among the annual killifish that require seasonal drying of their habitat.

Brood size and incubation details have not been reported in the literature for this species specifically. Based on comparisons with closely related congeners, females likely deposit small numbers of eggs per spawning bout over extended periods rather than in a single mass release, and males remain reproductively active throughout the warm-season months. Parental care is absent, as is typical for the genus: once eggs are deposited the parents pay no further attention to them. The eggs hatch into miniature replicas of the adults with no extended larval period.

In the aquarium

Cyprinodon albivelis is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade. The genus Cyprinodon as a whole has a limited presence in hobby fishkeeping, with most species kept only by specialist pupfish enthusiasts and native-fish hobbyists in North America. Where kept, pupfishes require hard, alkaline water matching their spring-water origins — soft, acidic water is unsuitable. Water temperature in the 68–79 °F range is appropriate for a high-elevation species, with care taken not to overheat tanks during summer.

Pupfishes are generally hardy once established in appropriate water chemistry, and C. albivelis would be expected to accept a varied diet including algae-based flake or pellet food, frozen mosquito larvae, daphnia, and similar small invertebrate-based foods. Males are territorial and aggressive toward one another; keeping a small group with one male and multiple females in a planted, well-structured aquarium is the typical approach. A secure lid is recommended for any small killifish. Given the species' restricted and potentially threatened wild range, any captive stock should be maintained with provenance records.

Conservation

Cyprinodon albivelis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026 — it carries Not Evaluated (NE) status. However, the characteristics that define its situation place it in a category of concern familiar to students of Chihuahuan Desert fish: extreme endemism, dependence on a small number of spring and ciénega sites, and exposure to the pressures of agricultural water extraction and habitat modification that have driven numerous related pupfishes to extinction or near-extinction in the American Southwest and Mexican plateau.

The Lago de Guzmán basin and adjacent systems have experienced significant hydrological modification over the twentieth century. The endorheic lake systems of northern Chihuahua are subject to groundwater pumping for irrigation and cattle ranching, which can reduce or eliminate spring flow — the sole water source for a spring-endemic fish. The introduction of non-native fishes, particularly western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), into Mexican desert spring systems has devastated numerous endemic killifish and pupfish populations elsewhere in the region; whether such introductions have reached C. albivelis sites is not documented in available sources. An earlier USDA Forest Service reference flagged this species under an 'E' (Endangered) designation in a conservation context, suggesting that some regional management frameworks recognised vulnerability before any formal IUCN process was completed.

The restricted distribution — concentrated in two adjacent basin systems with possibly only a handful of distinct spring sites — means that any local disturbance carries a disproportionate risk of range-wide impact. Formal assessment and monitoring of remaining populations, combined with habitat protection of the key spring sites in the Lago de Guzmán complex, would represent the most urgent conservation priorities for this species.
