Cyprinodon beltrani was described by José Álvarez del Villar in 1949 in the Mexican journal Revista de la Sociedad Mexicana de Historia Natural, with the type locality recorded as Laguna Chichancanab in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The original publication — Una nueva Especie de Peces Cyprinodontiformes de la Laguna de Chichankanab, Quintana Roo (Rev. Soc. Mex. Hist. Nat. 10(1–4):236) — placed the species within the genus Cyprinodon, and that placement has been maintained under subsequent systematic revisions. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Cyprinodon beltrani Álvarez, 1949 as the valid name.
Laguna Chichancanab harbours one of the most extraordinary radiations of pupfishes known in Mexico: a small flock of Cyprinodon species that appear to have diversified within the confines of a single karst lake from a common ancestor. Cyprinodon beltrani is one of these endemics, adapted to the particular conditions of this isolated water body. The evolutionary dynamics of the Chichancanab pupfish flock — parallel to the more famous Devil's Hole and Death Valley radiations of the US Southwest, though in a very different geological and hydrological setting — have attracted scientific interest as a model of rapid, lacustrine speciation in a closed system.
Morphology
Cyprinodon beltrani is a small, deep-bodied pupfish reaching a maximum of 2 in total length (FishBase). Like other members of the genus, it has the stocky, somewhat chunky body form characteristic of pupfishes: a blunt snout, a small, upturned mouth well suited to surface feeding and nibbling at substrates, and relatively large scales that give the fish a robust, armoured appearance for its size.
The common name 'blackfin pupfish' references the dark pigmentation in the fins that distinguishes this species within the Chichancanab flock. Sexual dichromatism is present: breeding males develop intensified colouration with darker fin markings and iridescent flanks, whereas females are generally more muted in colour and become noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid. These colour differences are typical of the genus and play a role in mate recognition, particularly important in a multi-species flock where reproductively isolating signals help maintain species boundaries.
Habitat
Laguna Chichancanab is a large, elongated karst sinkhole lake in the south of the Yucatán Peninsula, lying entirely within the state of Quintana Roo. The lake is fed by groundwater from the regional aquifer and has no surface outflow; its water chemistry is consequently hard, alkaline, and clear, with calcium and magnesium ions buffering the system at relatively high pH. FishBase records the thermal range for the species as 81–90 °F, consistent with the warm, stable temperatures typical of groundwater-fed tropical lakes.
Cyprinodon beltrani is strictly endemic to this lake; it does not occur in any other body of water in the world. The species occupies the shallow, littoral zones of the lake, particularly areas with aquatic vegetation, organic substrate, or rocky benthic structure where it can forage and seek shelter. Being benthopelagic and non-migratory, it lives out its entire life cycle within the confines of a single watershed — a degree of endemism that makes every individual in the lake irreplaceable in a genetic and ecological sense.
Feeding
FishBase classifies Cyprinodon beltrani as a detritivore, recording its primary diet as detritus — the fine organic matter that accumulates on the lake floor and on submerged surfaces. This diet is typical for Cyprinodon pupfishes in general, which use their small, upturned, finely toothed mouths to scrape, nip, and suck organic films and decomposing material from rocks, plants, and sediment. In practice, 'detritus' in a productive karst lake encompasses a mix of algal material, microbial mats, fine plant fragments, and invertebrate matter — a nutritionally varied substrate diet.
In captivity, the species adapts readily to a wide range of small foods: dried and powdered spirulina-based foods, high-quality micro-pellets, live or frozen daphnia, cyclops, and brine shrimp nauplii, and finely minced meaty items. Because the fish is small and the mouth is correspondingly tiny, food particle size matters more than composition; most standard killifish and small-fish diets are suitable provided the pieces are appropriately sized.
Mating
Cyprinodon beltrani is a non-annual pupfish living in permanent, groundwater-fed lake water; it does not undergo the diapause or desiccation cycles that characterise annual killies. Mating follows the plant- or substrate-spawner pattern typical of the genus Cyprinodon: males establish and defend small territories, displaying aggressively toward rival males and courting females with quivering, lateral displays and chasing behaviour. Competition among males is intense and can be vigorous even in small-bodied fish — territorial males will pursue and nip at intruders persistently.
Female choice operates within this display system: females visit male territories, assess the male's condition and the quality of the spawning site, and select a mate. In pupfishes generally, the pair execute a brief lateral embrace at the spawning site, releasing a small number of adhesive eggs that adhere to the substrate, plant material, or fine gravel. This sequence is repeated over the course of days or weeks rather than in a single mass-spawning event, producing a succession of small egg batches rather than a large clutch deposited all at once.
Breeding
As a non-annual killifish of permanent waters, Cyprinodon beltrani breeds in the typical Cyprinodon manner: adhesive eggs are deposited on fine-leaved plants, algal mats, fine gravel, or spawning mops over an extended period. The eggs do not require a dry diapause phase; they incubate directly in water, hatching after several days to approximately two weeks depending on temperature. Warmer water — consistent with the 81–90 °F range of the natural lake — accelerates development.
In the aquarium, the species is best bred in a species tank or a dedicated breeding setup with two or three females per male to distribute male aggression. A spawning mop or fine-leaved plants (or both) should be provided. Eggs can be removed to a separate rearing vessel to protect them from being eaten by the adults. Fry are tiny at hatching and require infusoria or commercial fry foods before graduating to nauplii. Growth is relatively rapid given the warm water, and juveniles develop the characteristic sexual colouration within weeks to months. Because these fish live in permanent water and are not subject to seasonal dry cycles, they can breed throughout the year under stable aquarium conditions.
In the aquarium
Cyprinodon beltrani is a specialist fish that rewards hobbyists with an interest in North and Central American desert and lacustrine killifishes. It is small, hardy within its preferred water parameters, and visually striking during breeding coloration — but the intense male-male aggression typical of Cyprinodon pupfishes means it is not suited to a general community tank. Males kept together in a small aquarium will fight incessantly; the best setups provide a single male with two or more females, or a sufficiently large and well-decorated aquarium where subordinate males can escape dominant individuals.
Water chemistry should reflect the hard, alkaline, warm conditions of Laguna Chichancanab: pH in the range of 7.5–8.5, moderate to high hardness (GH 10–20+ dGH), and temperature maintained at 79–86 °F. Unlike many killifish that demand soft, acidic water, pupfishes actively prefer hard water and deteriorate in soft, acidic conditions. A tight-fitting lid is prudent — pupfishes are capable jumpers — and the tank should be well-lit to support algal and biofilm growth on surfaces, which the fish will graze throughout the day.
Cyprinodon beltrani is rarely encountered in the general aquarium trade; it is maintained primarily by specialist killifish keepers and conservation-minded hobbyists who keep it in conjunction with ex-situ conservation programs. Acquisition typically requires contact with killifish societies or breeders with connections to North American pupfish conservation networks.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cyprinodon beltrani as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2, with the assessment dated 4 September 2018. The D2 criterion applies to species with a very restricted area of occupancy — in this case, a single lake — that face a plausible future threat capable of pushing the species to Critical status or Extinct within a short time. For Cyprinodon beltrani, with its entire world range confined to Laguna Chichancanab, every conceivable threat operates at maximum intensity: there is no refugium, no secondary population, and no rescue effect from immigration.
The threats to Laguna Chichancanab include groundwater extraction from the regional karst aquifer, which risks reducing lake levels and concentrating pollutants and competitors into a shrinking habitat; tourism and recreational development around the lake shore, which can increase nutrient loading and disturb littoral zones; and the accidental or deliberate introduction of non-native fish, including tilapia and the ever-present threat of mosquitofish (Gambusia), which have devastated single-locality endemic pupfish populations across the Americas. The endemic multi-species flock of Cyprinodon in Chichancanab is a collectively irreplaceable natural heritage; the loss of any one species from this flock, and the ecological interactions that maintain the flock's structure, represents an irreversible impoverishment of Mesoamerican biodiversity.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains a species profile for the blackfin pupfish, reflecting its broader conservation significance and the attention that Cyprinodon pupfishes receive from North American conservation agencies. Maintaining captive insurance populations in the hands of killifish societies and aquariums represents a complementary strategy to in-lake conservation — one that hobbyists can contribute to directly by keeping and breeding the species under appropriate conditions.
