Taxonomy & naming
Cyprinodon alvarezi was formally described by the American ichthyologist Robert Rush Miller in 1976, with the type locality given as a spring-fed pond known as Charco Palma or El Potosí, in Nuevo León, Mexico. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Cyprinodon alvarezi Miller, 1976. The specific epithet honours the individual after whom Miller named the species, following a long tradition within Cyprinodon of commemorative species names.
The genus Cyprinodon belongs to the family Cyprinodontidae and is the core pupfish radiation of the American deserts and coastal lowlands — a diverse assemblage of small, robust killifish adapted to extreme and fluctuating conditions from the arid US Southwest through Mexico, the Caribbean, and parts of Central America. The American Killifish Association classifies C. alvarezi in Class 1, New World Non-Annuals, reflecting its life history in a permanent (if now vanished) spring rather than a seasonal pool.
Morphology
The Potosí pupfish is a small, stocky fish typical of the genus Cyprinodon: a deep, laterally compressed body, a small upturned mouth, and the chunky profile characteristic of pupfishes adapted to still or slow-moving water. Seriously Fish records a maximum size of 2–2.5 in standard length, while FishBase gives 2 in total length as the maximum, with most adults commonly around 1.5 in TL — making it a modestly sized representative of its genus.
Colouration in breeding males is strongly expressed, as is typical among Cyprinodon: males develop vivid lateral banding, bold finnage coloration, and an intensified overall hue when in condition. Females and non-breeding males are plainer, with subdued banding and less pigmented fins. The body is scaled, the lateral line is incomplete as in all Cyprinodon, and the dentition consists of the tricuspid teeth characteristic of the family, suited to grazing on algae, biofilm, and organic detritus.
Habitat
The entirety of Cyprinodon alvarezi's native range consisted of a single spring-fed pond near the town of El Potosí in Nuevo León, Mexico, situated at approximately 1,880 metres above sea level in the Sierra Madre Oriental. Seriously Fish describes the site as a spring-fed pond with abundant aquatic vegetation, including Ceratophyllum (hornwort), Najas, Nasturtium (watercress), and Utricularia (bladderwort). The water was clear and hard, consistent with carbonate-rich limestone spring outflows typical of the region.
Water chemistry records from Seriously Fish place the temperature range at 63–79 °F and pH at 7.0–8.0, with hardness of 179–357 ppm — distinctly hard, alkaline, mineralised water rather than the soft acidic blackwater associated with many forest-dwelling killifishes. This chemistry reflects the calcareous geology of the Nuevo León highlands. FishBase records a slightly narrower temperature range of 64–72 °F for the wild site. The spring's permanence, exceptional at such altitude in an arid region, was the ecological foundation for this species — its loss was catastrophic and irreversible for the wild population.
Feeding
Like most Cyprinodon, the Potosí pupfish is an opportunistic feeder and grazer. The tricuspid dentition and small upturned mouth are well suited to scraping algae, biofilm, and periphyton from submerged surfaces, supplemented by invertebrates, organic detritus, and small plant material encountered in the vegetated spring habitat. Pupfishes as a group are notable for their dietary flexibility, which is part of what allowed them to colonise marginal desert habitats in the first place.
In captivity, the species accepts a range of small prepared and live foods. Because breeding requires mineralised water and the fish are small and sensitive to water quality fluctuations, a varied diet of appropriately sized foods — small dried flakes and granules, nauplii, micro-worms, and small frozen invertebrates — is recommended to maintain condition and breeding readiness in conservation stocks.
Mating
Cyprinodon alvarezi is a non-annual plant spawner: it does not bury diapausing eggs in mud and does not depend on a seasonal dry–wet cycle for reproduction. The species spawns continuously or semi-continuously in permanent water, scattering adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation over extended periods — a reproductive mode consistent with its spring-habitat ancestry, where water was available year-round.
Breeding males in full colour are territorial and actively court females, displaying lateral banding and elevated finnage. As with other Cyprinodon, males may be aggressive toward one another and toward females outside of immediate spawning activity. The eggs are small, adhesive, and deposited on plant matter or other fine substrates near the water surface or within vegetation — they incubate in water rather than entering diapause, and there is no parental care beyond the spawning act itself.
Breeding
In the aquarium, successful breeding of the Potosí pupfish requires careful attention to water chemistry, since the species evolved in hard, alkaline, mineralised spring water and does not tolerate the soft or acidic conditions that suit many other killifishes. Seriously Fish specifies that breeding water should be prepared with added minerals: gypsum, sodium chloride, magnesium salts, and sodium bicarbonate are used to replicate the hardness and alkalinity of the El Potosí spring. Failure to provide appropriate water chemistry will typically result in poor health and reproductive failure.
Eggs are laid in small batches over vegetation or spawning mops and should be removed to prevent predation by the adults. At appropriate temperatures the eggs develop within a week or two without diapause. Fry are small at hatching and require infusoria or commercial fry powder as first foods, graduating to nauplii as they grow. Because this species is effectively Extinct in the Wild, every successful captive breeding is of genuine conservation significance, and the American Killifish Association has historically coordinated studbook-style record-keeping for the species among member breeders.
In the aquarium
The Potosí pupfish is classified by FishBase as difficult to maintain in the aquarium, and this difficulty is primarily a water-chemistry challenge rather than a behavioural one. The species requires hard, alkaline, mineralised water (pH 7.0–8.0, hardness 179–357 ppm) at moderate temperatures (63–79 °F); soft, acidic, or warm water causes health deterioration. A purpose-prepared mineral mix — gypsum, sodium chloride, magnesium compounds, sodium bicarbonate — is standard practice among keepers, as documented by Seriously Fish.
The fish are small and can be kept in modestly sized aquaria, but water stability is paramount. A heavily planted tank with fine-leaved plants to receive eggs, along with efficient but gentle filtration, suits the species well. Males can be aggressive toward one another and may harass females; providing excess females or visual barriers reduces stress. Given the species' conservation status, keepers are strongly encouraged to connect with the American Killifish Association and participate in coordinated breeding programmes. The fish is not a casual species for the general aquarium hobby — it is a conservation responsibility for specialist killifish keepers.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Cyprinodon alvarezi as Extinct in the Wild (EW), assessed on 12 September 2018, with an assessment attributed to Valdes Gonzales (2019). This is the most extreme conservation category short of total extinction, and the status is unambiguous: no wild population is known to exist or has been known to exist since the late 1990s. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service also carries a federal listing and conservation context record for the species, reflecting its recognition as a critically lost North American desert fish.
The causes of extinction were multiple and sequential. Carassius auratus (goldfish) were already present in the pond by 1961, established before the species was formally described. Micropterus salmoides (largemouth bass) arrived by 1974, and a corresponding decline in the pupfish population was documented from that date. By 1985 the spring pond itself had desiccated — a direct consequence of agricultural water exploitation draining the aquifer that fed the spring. Only a trickle remained in distributary channels, and by 1996 the species was gone from the wild entirely. No recovery effort has succeeded in re-establishing a wild population; the original habitat no longer exists in a form capable of sustaining the fish.
Survival rests entirely on captive stocks held by specialist killifish keepers, coordinated in part through the American Killifish Association, which has published at least 15 JAKA (Journal of the American Killifish Association) articles covering conservation and species maintenance. These captive populations represent the species' only insurance against total extinction, and their continued management — with attention to genetic diversity, proper water chemistry, and inter-keeper coordination — is the sole conservation strategy currently available.
