Gnatholebias zonatus is a large, boldly coloured South American annual killifish of the Orinoco llanos — the vast, seasonally flooded savannas of Venezuela and Colombia. Like all members of its genus, it inhabits temporary pools that vanish completely in the dry season, burying its eggs in the soft substrate to survive the drought in diapause. Males are among the most spectacular of the South American annuals, reaching up to 4.5 in and carrying vivid bands of colour; the species has been imported and bred by specialist killifish hobbyists since the 1960s and has accumulated an extensive record in the Journal of the American Killifish Association.

Taxonomy & naming

Gnatholebias zonatus was originally described by George S. Myers in 1935 as Pterolebias zonatus, based on specimens from Venezuela. The authority is written in parentheses — (Myers, 1942) per the American Killifish Association's record — reflecting that the species has since been moved from its original genus. The transfer to Gnatholebias was made by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1998 as part of a systematic revision of South American annual killifishes. The AKA records the original Pterolebias zonatus as a senior synonym now subordinated under the current combination; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Gnatholebias zonatus (Myers, 1942) as the valid name.

Gnatholebias is a small genus of large-bodied annual killies placed within the tribe Cynolebiatini (family Rivulidae), the dominant lineage of South American annual killifishes. The genus name combines the Greek gnathos (jaw) with the suffix -lebias, a diminutive evocative of Greek lepis (scale) that has become conventional in Rivulidae nomenclature. The specific epithet zonatus is Latin for 'banded' or 'belted', describing the conspicuous transverse barring on the flanks of the male.

The species has a substantial record in the American Killifish Association literature — cited at least 23 times in the Journal of the American Killifish Association (JAKA) since 1969 — reflecting the enthusiasm of specialists who have maintained and bred it across multiple collection strains. A notable hobbyist strain goes by the code Finca BBL 01-6 (from a Venezuelan farm locality), described as highly colourful but somewhat more demanding to breed than Apure basin material.

Morphology

Males of Gnatholebias zonatus are among the largest annual killies in the hobby, reaching approximately 4.5 in total length according to It Rains Fishes, while FishBase gives a maximum of 4 in TL. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with a pointed snout and a dorsally placed dorsal fin set well back along the body — a configuration typical of annual killies that spend much of their time near the bottom of shallow pools. Meristic counts from It Rains Fishes give approximately 11.6 dorsal fin rays and 22.4 anal fin rays.

Male coloration is spectacular: the flanks carry the vivid transverse banding that the specific name celebrates, overlaid with iridescent pigment that varies between populations and strains. Females, as is universal in the family, are substantially more subdued — olive-brown or tan with inconspicuous spotting or banding — and are smaller than males. Males are larger at birth and grow more rapidly; the sexes become distinguishable early in development and should be separated promptly in the aquarium to avoid male-dominated sex-ratio skewing further reducing female numbers.

Habitat

Gnatholebias zonatus inhabits the Orinoco River basin, with a distribution spanning Venezuela (the primary range, where at least 39 collection localities are documented by the AKA) and Colombia, including the Rio Meta drainage around Puerto López. It Rains Fishes describes the characteristic habitat as shaded temporary pools in the tributaries of the Orinoco llanos — low-lying, seasonally inundated savannas where pools form during the wet season and evaporate completely in the dry months, often leaving cracked clay pans.

Within these pools the species occupies shallow, soft-bottomed microhabitats where the substrate is thick peat, mud, or accumulated detritus — the medium into which eggs must be buried. It is regularly found in sympatry with other Venezuelan annuals including Llanolebias stellifer and Rachovia maculipinnis, which share the same temporary-pool ecology. FishBase records the water parameters at collection localities as pH 6.5, temperature 70 °F, and hardness approximately 6.5 dH — soft, slightly acidic conditions consistent with the leached, poorly buffered soils of the llanos. Hobbyist sources suggest the captive range 75–81 °F.

The fish is categorised as non-migratory (FishBase), which in the context of an annual killi simply reflects that the adult fish does not leave its pool — the 'migration' between dry-season refugia is accomplished entirely by the buried, diapausing eggs.

Feeding

FishBase characterises Gnatholebias zonatus as omnivorous, consistent with the opportunistic feeding strategy of most annual killies exploiting temporary pools with boom-and-bust productivity cycles. In the wild, a fish this size in a productive seasonal pool takes whatever prey is available — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and small invertebrates dominating when invertebrate populations peak after pool filling.

In the aquarium, specialist hobbyists strongly favour live and frozen foods. Killi.co.uk specifically names pinhead crickets and fruit flies (Drosophila) as preferred prey items — surface-presented live foods that trigger strong predatory responses. Frozen bloodworms, Artemia, and similar invertebrate foods are also accepted. Given the species' large adult size, appropriately sized prey is important; small live foods such as Daphnia and nauplii are adequate for young fish but adults benefit from more substantial offerings. A varied, protein-rich diet supports the fast growth rates and robust coloration characteristic of the species.

Mating

Gnatholebias zonatus is a canonical annual killi: its entire reproductive strategy is built around the certainty that its habitat will dry up completely. Males are intensely competitive, displaying vivid banding and iridescent flanks to rivals and to receptive females. Spawning pairs drive into the substrate together in a brief nuptial dive — the male pressing alongside the female as both fish push partially into the soft peat or mud bottom — releasing eggs and sperm directly into the sediment.

The sex ratio in captive populations tends to be male-biased, an inherent characteristic of the species that Killi.co.uk notes is exacerbated if the sexes are not separated early. Because males will harass and injure females in close quarters, housing a single male with one or two females, or providing dense cover and multiple females per male, is standard practice among hobbyists. The breeding season in the wild corresponds to the wet season; in captivity spawning can proceed year-round provided a suitable substrate and adequate feeding are maintained.

Breeding

Breeding Gnatholebias zonatus follows the standard peat-spawning protocol used for all South American diapausing annuals. A deep layer of soft peat or coco-coir substrate — at least 3–4 in — is placed on the aquarium bottom. Spawning pairs make repeated substrate dives over days and weeks; the eggs are released and fertilised within the substrate and remain buried as the adults continue feeding above. Eggs are collected by siphoning or pouring off the substrate, and the peat is then squeezed lightly and stored in sealed plastic bags or containers at 75–82 °F.

Incubation is one of the longest in the hobby: It Rains Fishes records 7–9 months at 82–91 °F, and Killi.co.uk gives approximately 7 months at 75 °F or 5 months at 81 °F. The diapausing eggs undergo developmental arrest during this dry period, resuming when re-wetted with soft, slightly acidic water. Fry are immediately free-swimming and large enough to take baby brine shrimp nauplii from first feeding. Growth is rapid — Killi.co.uk reports the fish begin breeding at approximately one month of age — and the full cycle from hatching to reproductive maturity mirrors the compressed life history imposed by the short wet season in nature.

Killi.co.uk rates the species as difficult to breed, largely because of substrate-diving requirements, the extended incubation period, and the male-heavy sex ratio. A minimum tank of 15–25 US gal is recommended to give pairs sufficient space and to reduce male aggression against females.

In the aquarium

Gnatholebias zonatus is a rewarding but demanding specialist's fish. Its large size — approaching 4.5 in for males — means it requires more space than many annual killies; It Rains Fishes specifies a minimum aquarium of 15 US gal, while Killi.co.uk recommends 25 US gal. Crucially, the tank must be tightly covered: the species can jump at least 8 in vertically (Killi.co.uk), and uncovered tanks result in fatal escapes.

Water parameters should reflect the soft, slightly acidic conditions of the Orinoco llanos: very soft water (close to 6.5 dH or below), pH around 6.5, and temperature in the range 75–81 °F (Killi.co.uk). Subdued lighting and a dark substrate help settle the fish and bring out male colouration. Live or frozen foods form the core diet; the species does not adapt as readily as some killies to dry prepared foods. A deep, soft peat or coco-coir layer on the tank floor is necessary for natural spawning behaviour.

The Finca BBL 01-6 strain, developed from Venezuelan farm material, is noted by Killi.co.uk as producing particularly vivid males, though it is considered somewhat harder to breed than material from the Apure basin. The AKA maintains an active record of the species across clubs and annual conventions, and obtaining eggs or fry through killifish society networks is often more reliable than sourcing from commercial importers.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Gnatholebias zonatus as Least Concern (LC) in 2020 (Taphorn et al. 2021, version 2025-2). The assessment reflects the species' broad distribution across multiple drainages in Venezuela and Colombia — at least 39 collection localities are documented — and the absence of evidence for rapid population decline.

Nonetheless, the long-term viability of llanos annual killifishes depends on the persistence of intact seasonal flooding cycles. The Venezuelan llanos are subject to pressures including agricultural conversion, drainage for cattle ranching, and alterations to the Orinoco floodplain hydrology. Any significant reduction in the extent or duration of seasonal inundation removes the temporary pools that annual killies require; unlike permanent-water species, annuals cannot shift to alternative habitats if their pools are drained or filled. Mosquitofish introductions (Gambusia spp.) in some Neotropical regions also threaten native killifish by competing for invertebrate prey and preying on eggs and fry, though the specific extent of this pressure on G. zonatus in its Venezuelan range is not well documented.

The hobbyist community, organised through the AKA and affiliated national clubs, maintains captive populations of multiple strains and has done so since the 1960s — a record that provides some insurance against localised wild population loss, though captive lines inevitably diverge genetically from wild populations over time. Continued field surveys to monitor population status across the species' Venezuelan and Colombian range, alongside habitat protection for the llanos seasonal wetlands, represent the most important conservation actions.
