Taxonomy & naming
Anablepsoides deltaphilus was described by Lothar Seegers in 1983, and the authority is accordingly presented in parentheses to reflect subsequent transfer from its original genus placement. The valid combination is maintained in the family Rivulidae, subfamily Rivulinae, under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. ETYFish (Scharpf & Lazara) records the etymology directly: deltaphilus is formed from Greek philos, meaning 'loving' or 'fond of', appended to delta — a reference to the Orinoco River delta of Venezuela, which serves as the type locality and defines the species' identity in the aquarium hobby and scientific literature alike.
The species spent much of its documented history under the genus Rivulus, which formerly housed the bulk of the New World rivuline killifishes. Molecular and morphological revisions of the Rivulidae through the 2000s and 2010s progressively dismembered the old Rivulus aggregate into a suite of smaller genera; Anablepsoides, erected by Huber in 1992, absorbed the South American rivulines formerly placed in the Rivulus deltaphilus group. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes accept Anablepsoides deltaphilus as the current valid name.
Morphology
Anablepsoides deltaphilus is a slender, moderately elongated killifish with a maximum recorded total length of 2.5 in (FishBase). The body plan is typical of South American rivulines: a laterally compressed torpedo shape tapering to a rounded caudal fin, a dorsal fin set far back toward the tail, and a subterminal mouth well suited to surface and mid-water feeding.
Meristic data from It Rains Fishes documents D7, A13, and 36 lateral-line scales — counts that help distinguish the species from its closest Anablepsoides relatives in the Orinoco drainage. The amber-coloured eggs recorded in breeding observations (approximately 0.5 in diameter) hint at carotenoid pigmentation that may also surface in male colouration, though colour description for this species in the hobby literature is limited. Males are typically more vividly marked than females, the sexual dimorphism expected of the genus.
Habitat
The native range of Anablepsoides deltaphilus is the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela (FishBase), with particular association with the Orinoco delta region that inspired the species' name. The Orinoco system encompasses a vast lowland drainage crossing llanos grasslands, gallery forests, and deltaic swamps; within this range, rivuline killifishes typically inhabit shallow, slow-moving or standing side channels, flooded forest margins, and permanent pools with abundant surface vegetation or leaf litter.
FishBase records an aquarium temperature range of 72–82 °F for the species, consistent with the warm but not extreme conditions of northern Venezuela. As a non-annual species, Anablepsoides deltaphilus requires permanent or near-permanent water bodies — it does not inhabit seasonal pools that dry completely and lacks the egg-diapause mechanism of annual killifishes. Water chemistry in the Orinoco basin is variable but large portions of the system carry soft, slightly acidic to neutral water derived from nutrient-poor savanna and forest catchments.
Feeding
Like other South American rivulines, Anablepsoides deltaphilus is a micro-predator in the wild, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, and other zooplankton at and near the water surface. The forward-positioned, upturned mouth of rivuline killifishes is adapted for ambush feeding in the surface film and just below it — a posture that coincides with the dense insect activity at the air–water interface of forested stream margins.
In the aquarium, It Rains Fishes notes that the species is straightforward to feed on standard small live and frozen foods: artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii are used as the primary food for fry, and adults accept a range of suitably sized invertebrate foods. Varied feeding with live or frozen items maintains condition and supports the extended, regular spawning pattern characteristic of non-annual rivulines.
Mating
Anablepsoides deltaphilus is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish — a fundamental distinction from the annual soil-burying killifishes that dominate parts of the hobby. Pairs or small trios court and spawn repeatedly over weeks and months rather than in a single season-linked event tied to temporary water. Mating follows the typical rivuline pattern: the male courts the female with lateral displays and fin-spreading, and the pair briefly align side-by-side or the male curves alongside the female at the moment of egg release.
Each spawning embrace deposits a small number of eggs — It Rains Fishes records 5–15 eggs per day across the full adult lifespan — which are attached to fine-leaved plants, floating spawning mops, or a dark substrate near the surface or along the bottom, where the amber-coloured, adhesive eggs adhere and develop in open water without diapause. Breeding

Fry require fine first foods: artemia nauplii are the standard starting diet and are accepted readily from hatching. Because spawning continues intermittently over the whole adult lifespan, a colony maintained with regular egg collection can produce fry continuously rather than in a single seasonal cohort — a productive and low-effort breeding setup once established.

It Rains Fishes rates Anablepsoides deltaphilus as difficult to maintain in captivity — a rating echoed in the FishBase profile — which places it in a different tier from more forgiving South American rivulines. The exact source of the difficulty is not fully elaborated in available hobby literature, but may relate to water-quality sensitivity, susceptibility to velvet (Oodinium), or the need for appropriately cool, stable conditions at the lower end of its 72–82 °F range.
Housing should accommodate the species' jumping ability: It Rains Fishes specifically flags Anablepsoides deltaphilus as an excellent jumper, making a tight-fitting aquarium lid essential — an escape from even a briefly uncovered tank is likely fatal. Males may show aggression toward one another; a species aquarium with one male and two or more females, or a small single-sex group of females, reduces conflict. Soft, slightly acidic water reflecting Orinoco basin conditions is appropriate, with gentle filtration and ample surface vegetation or floating plants providing cover and spawning sites. This is a specialist's fish for the dedicated killifish keeper rather than a casual community aquarium species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Anablepsoides deltaphilus as Least Concern in April 2017 (taxon ID 53877183, assessment ID 118037784). The basis for this assessment is a distribution encompassing the broad Orinoco River basin of Venezuela combined with a FishBase resilience rating of high — meaning the population can at minimum double within 15 months under favourable conditions, conferring demographic robustness against moderate pressure.
Nonetheless, the species' association with the Orinoco delta and adjacent lowland drainages places it within a region subject to ongoing threats from hydrocarbon extraction, agricultural expansion, and deforestation affecting the riparian gallery forests and floodplain pools that rivuline killifishes depend on. Non-annual killifishes are generally more sensitive to permanent hydrological alteration than annual species, since they lack the insurance of desiccation-resistant buried eggs — any degradation or elimination of the permanent water bodies they inhabit directly suppresses populations with no seasonal recovery mechanism. Monitoring of Orinoco basin rivulines as land-use change intensifies in Venezuela remains warranted.
