Among the more than a hundred described species of bristlenose plecos, Ancistrus macrophthalmus stands out immediately by a single prominent feature: eyes that are disproportionately large for the genus, giving the fish a wide-awake, almost startled expression quite distinct from the more conventionally proportioned face of the common bristlenose. Restricted to the Orinoco basin of Venezuela, it remains an uncommon and quietly coveted species among dedicated Ancistrus enthusiasts.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus macrophthalmus was described by Jacques Pellegrin in 1912 in the Bulletin de la Société Zoologique de France (volume 37, number 8, page 271, figure 1), from material collected at the Río Orinoco, Venezuela. The original combination was Xenocara macrophthalma; the current valid combination Ancistrus macrophthalmus (Pellegrin, 1912) was established by Gosline (1945:95) and is confirmed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid 48910). FishBase notes that Müller and Weber (1992:752) subsequently commented on the tooth shape without providing a full redescription.

The species sits within genus Ancistrus, tribe Ancistrini, subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004). Ancistrus is a large, taxonomically challenging genus with over 70 described species and a complex history of synonymies; no comprehensive revision has been published since Fisch-Muller (2003), leaving the boundaries and affinities of many species, including A. macrophthalmus, imprecisely resolved. PlanetCatfish (Cat-eLog) lists this species under the trade code LDA074, the code it typically receives when imported from Venezuelan collectors; no DATZ L-number is on record.

Morphology

The defining character of Ancistrus macrophthalmus is contained in its name: disproportionately large eyes compared to congeners, visible on first inspection. Adults reach approximately 3 in SL (FishBase, Ref. 36713; PlanetCatfish records 3 in SL), placing it among the smaller to medium members of the genus — comfortably within the range expected of the trade's 'dwarf bristlenose' grouping.

The body is the classic Ancistrus pattern: armoured in overlapping bony scutes, with a flattened ventral profile, a broad depressed head, and a ventral suckermouth. Ground coloration is typically brownish-grey to olive-brown, with scattered pale spots or a finely mottled pattern; exact patterning varies with collection locality and individual.

The defining dimorphic character of all Ancistrus is the tentacles (bushy fleshy growths) that develop on the snout of mature males. In A. macrophthalmus, males develop these tentacles prominently on both the snout and along the snout margins; females may occasionally develop a few modest tentacles at the snout rim, but never to the elaborate branching extent seen in males. Females are generally broader-bodied than males when gravid, especially visible from above.

Habitat

Ancistrus macrophthalmus is restricted to the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela, including the lower reaches of some of its principal tributaries (FishBase; CoF distribution data). This places it in a large, seasonally dynamic, lowland tropical river system characterised by pronounced wet- and dry-season cycles and a wide variety of habitats from main-channel rocky runs to calmer floodplain tributaries.

The enlarged eyes of A. macrophthalmus suggest an adaptation to dimly lit or structurally complex microhabitats — crevices among boulders, root tangles, or submerged debris where low light conditions prevail. In the Orinoco system, many Ancistrus species are associated with bedrock and boulder habitats in clear or tannin-stained blackwater drainages. The type locality (Río Orinoco proper) is a large whitewater river, but downstream and lateral tributaries offer a range of softer, darker conditions.

Water chemistry in the Orinoco's Llanos tributaries is typically soft to moderately hard, pH ranging from near-neutral in main-channel stretches to acidic (pH 5.5–6.5) in the blackwater tributaries draining the Guiana shield. Temperatures are warm throughout the year, typically 77–86 °F.

Feeding

Like all Ancistrus, A. macrophthalmus is a herbivore and biofilm grazer. In nature it rasps periphyton, epilithic algae, and associated microorganisms from hard surfaces — rocks, submerged wood, and compacted substrate — using its small, bicuspid, pectinate teeth. It also ingests fine organic detritus as part of this substrate scraping.

In the aquarium, the diet should be predominantly plant-based. Algae wafers, spirulina discs, and sinking spirulina-based pellets form the dietary backbone; fresh vegetables — blanched zucchini (courgette), cucumber, sweet potato, and leafy greens — should be offered several times weekly. Small quantities of protein-rich foods (frozen bloodworm, small prawn, or catfish-specific sinking pellets) can be given occasionally to replicate the invertebrate component that likely features in the natural diet, but excessive protein is counterproductive in a largely herbivorous species.

Driftwood placed in the tank provides biofilm grazing surface, dietary fibre, and psychological cover. Without adequate grazing substrate and plant-based food, Ancistrus species may rasp at silicone seams or smooth glass in search of biofilm.

Mating

Ancistrus macrophthalmus follows the universal Ancistrus reproductive strategy. Males establish and defend a cavity — typically a narrow crevice, hollow piece of driftwood, or artificial cave — against rival males. The snout tentacles that distinguish mature males from females are thought to function at least partly in intraspecific mate assessment and possibly in fanning eggs within the confined cave interior.

Male territorial behaviour intensifies when a ripe female is nearby. The male will display at the cave entrance, possibly extending tentacles and fanning fins. If the female is ready, she enters the cavity and deposits eggs on the inner surfaces; the male fertilises them and immediately begins his parental duties.

In a spacious tank with multiple cave structures, several males may coexist with reduced conflict, though dominant individuals tend to claim the most desirable breeding sites. Two females can be housed more easily than two males in a smaller tank.

Breeding

Ancistrus macrophthalmus is a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, consistent with all described Ancistrus species. PlanetCatfish records two breeding reports for this species, confirming it has been bred in captivity, though it remains less routinely bred than the common bristlenose (A. cirrhosus and relatives) due to its comparative rarity in the hobby.

After spawning, the male remains in the cave fanning the adhesive egg mass with his pectoral and pelvic fins to maintain oxygen supply and clearing away infertile or fungused eggs. The clutch is moderately sized — typical Ancistrus clutches range from a few dozen to around 150 eggs depending on female size and condition. Incubation is approximately 5–7 days at tropical temperatures. Newly hatched fry cling to the cave walls, absorbing the yolk sac for several more days before becoming free-swimming.

Providing a suitable cave (a short length of PVC pipe, a ceramic breeding tube, or a hollowed piece of driftwood), a varied diet to condition both sexes, clean warm water, and a moderate water-current stimulus typically results in spawning in well-conditioned adults.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus macrophthalmus is a rewarding aquarium fish for the enthusiast willing to seek it out. At under 3 in SL, it is genuinely compact and can be accommodated in tanks from about 20 US gal upwards — though a 25–40 US gal tank with appropriate furnishings is more comfortable for a pair or trio. Water should reflect Orinoco origins: temperature 75–84 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, soft to moderately hard. The species is unlikely to thrive long-term in hard, alkaline water.

The large eyes that distinguish this species from common bristlenose plecos are a useful reminder of its preference for cover and subdued light. Dense planting, overhanging driftwood, caves, and leaf litter will encourage it to emerge more regularly and reduce the stress-related pallor that this species can display in bare, brightly lit tanks.

A. macrophthalmus is peaceful toward other fish but males are typically intolerant of each other at close quarters. A 1:2 male-to-female ratio with ample caves is the standard recommendation. The species is compatible with the smaller Orinoco community fish — tetras, Corydoras, small cichlids, and dwarf cichlids of appropriate temperament.

Its rarity in the trade means tank-raised specimens, when available, tend to command a premium over common bristlenose; wild imports appear occasionally from Venezuelan exporters.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus macrophthalmus as Least Concern in 2020 (FishBase Ref. 130435; IUCN URL: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/176013270/176013276). The assessment notes the species' occurrence throughout the Orinoco basin and identifies no current evidence of significant population decline.

The Orinoco basin is not subject to the same intensity of large-scale hydroelectric development as the Paraná or Xingu, but it faces ongoing threats from deforestation in the Llanos and Guiana Shield margins, petroleum extraction activity in parts of the basin, and incremental agricultural expansion. Blackwater tributaries associated with Guiana Shield geology — the habitat type most likely used by this species — are sensitive to alteration of terrestrial vegetation, which directly affects water chemistry and light penetration.

Ornamental fishery collection from Venezuela has historically supplied the aquarium trade with Orinoco specialities including Ancistrus species, but changing export regulations since the mid-2010s have made Venezuelan imports irregular. The species has been bred in captivity, providing a potential route to sustaining hobby populations without ongoing wild collection.
