Taxonomy & naming
Hylopanchax paucisquamatus was originally described by Jacques Pellegrin in 1928 from material collected in the Congo basin, and the authority is therefore presented in parentheses to indicate the name has been transferred from its original generic placement. The valid combination is currently Hylopanchax paucisquamatus (Pellegrin, 1928) as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong).
The genus Hylopanchax belongs to the family Poeciliidae sensu lato (or Procatopodidae, depending on the classification followed) within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Hylopanchax is a Central African lampeye genus, part of the informal 'procatopodid' assemblage of African non-annual killifishes that are distinguished from the annual Nothobranchius-allied groups by their permanent-water lifestyle and continuous spawning strategy. The species epithet paucisquamatus is Latin for 'few-scaled', from pauci- (few) and squamatus (scaled), a reference to the relatively low mid-longitudinal scale count — 19–21 scales — that helps distinguish this species from its congeners.
The meristic diagnosis separating H. paucisquamatus from other Hylopanchax species includes a unique combination of body depth (26.1–27.2% SL), head length (26.7–29.6% SL), dorsal-fin base length (11.7–13.1% SL), and the low scale count noted above. Fin-ray counts are 9–11 dorsal soft rays and 17–18 anal soft rays; vertebral count is 29–30.
Morphology
Hylopanchax paucisquamatus is among the smallest members of its genus, with a recorded maximum of 1 in standard length. The body form is slender and laterally compressed, typical of lampeye killifishes, with a pointed snout and a strongly upturned mouth adapted for surface and near-surface feeding. The mid-longitudinal scale count of 19–21 is the lowest in the genus and forms part of the diagnostic suite.
As with all lampeyes, the defining visual feature is the iridescent patch of tissue above the eye — the 'lantern' that gives the group its common name. In life this organ glows with a blue-green to silvery luminescence that functions in social signalling and schooling cohesion in the dim-light forest-stream and swamp environments the fish inhabits. The body is otherwise translucent to pale olive, with males typically showing more intense reflective flanks than females. Sexual dimorphism is modest in this group: males tend to be slimmer and more vividly coloured; females are somewhat deeper-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
The known range of Hylopanchax paucisquamatus is confined to the Likouala River drainage within the middle Congo River basin, in the Republic of Congo. Confirmed collection localities include Lokoue Saline and Epoma, both within or immediately adjacent to Odzala-Kokoua National Park — a vast area of equatorial rainforest and swamp forest in northwestern Congo.
Like most Central African procatopodid lampeyes, H. paucisquamatus inhabits permanent waters: small forest streams, swampy river margins, and still or slow-moving pools shaded by dense gallery forest. These environments are typically warm (around 73–81 °F), clear to lightly stained with humic acids, and soft to moderately soft. The reference to 'saline' in the Lokoue Saline locality name may indicate mineral-enriched or slightly alkaline conditions at that site, though detailed water-chemistry data for this species' microhabitats are not available in the primary literature. FishBase records the species as freshwater, pelagic, and tropical, consistent with open-water schooling behaviour near the surface.
Feeding
FishBase assigns H. paucisquamatus a trophic level of 3.1, placing it as a micropredator of small invertebrates — the standard feeding guild for lampeye killifishes of its size class. In the wild, lampeyes of this body size typically consume microcrustaceans, insect larvae, small worms, and invertebrate eggs gleaned from the water surface and water column.
In the aquarium, small live and frozen foods are the most reliable diet: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and baby brine shrimp are appropriate staples for a fish of this scale. High-quality micro-pellets or fine dried foods may be accepted once the fish is established, but live and frozen foods support the best colouration and conditioning for spawning. Given the very small adult size, food particle size must be matched carefully.
Mating
Hylopanchax paucisquamatus is a non-annual lampeye: it inhabits permanent waters and does not produce diapausing eggs buried in substrate. Its reproductive strategy is one of continuous, protracted spawning rather than a seasonal boom-and-bust cycle. Males court females with lateral displays that prominently show the iridescent supraocular patch, using the luminescent eye-spot in visual signalling — a behaviour well documented across the procatopodid lampeyes.
Spawning is adhesive and plant-associated: the pair briefly clasp or align side by side and deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic or emergent vegetation, roots, and moss. Only a few eggs are laid per spawning act, but the process is repeated continuously over days and weeks. This drip-spawn strategy distributes reproductive effort across time and microhabitats, reducing the impact of any single predation event on the entire clutch.
Breeding
Under aquarium conditions, a well-conditioned pair or small group of H. paucisquamatus will spawn among Java moss, spawning mops, or fine-leaved plants placed in the upper and mid-water zones. Eggs are small, adhesive, and relatively robust compared to annual killifish eggs; they do not require drying or a diapause period and will hatch within 10–14 days at typical tropical temperatures (75–79 °F), a timeline typical for non-annual procatopodid killifishes.
Fry are small at hatching — consistent with the tiny adult size — and require infusoria or commercial fry powder as first foods, graduating to Artemia nauplii within the first week or two. Because the adults will consume both eggs and fry, spawning plants or mops should be moved to a separate rearing vessel periodically. No parental care occurs beyond the spawning act itself. The species is probably best maintained as a small school in a dedicated species or near-species tank rather than in mixed community conditions, where its tiny size makes it vulnerable.
In the aquarium
Hylopanchax paucisquamatus is a specialist subject: its very small adult size (under 1 in SL) and schooling nature make it unsuitable as a community fish except with other micro-species of similar temperament. A dedicated nano or species tank of 10–15 US gal, heavily planted and filtered with gentle flow, provides appropriate conditions. The species is adapted to still or near-still forest waters and does not tolerate strong current.
Water temperature in the range of 73–81 °F is appropriate; soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.2) mirrors the likely conditions of its forest-stream origin. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important — lampeyes of this size class are sensitive to accumulated nitrates and organic loading. Because of its restricted wild range and low fishing-vulnerability score, captive populations maintained by specialist killifish keepers hold real value as insurance against habitat loss. The American Killifish Association lists the species and can connect interested keepers with collectors who have worked the Odzala-area drainage.
Conservation
Hylopanchax paucisquamatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). The known range — two localities in the Likouala drainage within and near Odzala-Kokoua National Park — is geographically restricted, though the protection afforded by the national park provides a meaningful buffer against direct habitat destruction at those sites.
Odzala-Kokoua is one of the largest and least disturbed blocks of Congo Basin rainforest, but it is not immune to pressure: artisanal logging at its margins, bushmeat hunting, and the encroachment of subsistence agriculture all represent ongoing threats to the forest hydrology on which this species depends. The Likouala drainage more broadly — outside the protected zone — is subject to forest clearance and the associated degradation of small stream habitats. For a fish known from only two localities and reaching barely 1 in, any narrowing of suitable habitat is a serious concern. A formal IUCN assessment and systematic surveys of the Likouala basin would help establish whether additional populations exist and how much the species' conservation outlook depends on the continued integrity of Odzala-Kokoua.
