Hylopanchax stictopleuron is a small West African lampeye killifish first described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1949 from the Congo basin. Like all members of the Hylopanchax lineage it carries the hallmark supraocular iridescent light-organ that gives lampeyes their name — a patch of reflective tissue above the eye that glimmers blue-green under natural light. A non-annual species of permanent forest streams and swamp margins, it remains poorly documented in the scientific literature and virtually absent from the mainstream aquarium trade, leaving much of its biology inferred from congeners rather than direct study.

Taxonomy & naming

Hylopanchax stictopleuron was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1949, with material originating from the Congo basin region of Central Africa. The parenthetical authority notation indicates that the species has been placed in a genus other than the one Fowler originally assigned it to. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name; the combination Hylopanchax stictopleuron (Fowler, 1949) is accepted as currently valid.

The genus Hylopanchax is a small lampeye genus within the family Poeciliidae (subfamily Procatopodinae), the African lampeyes. It has historically accommodated a handful of West and Central African stream-dwelling species united by body form and the characteristic supraocular light organ. The genus has been subject to ongoing revision as molecular phylogenetics reshapes lampeye classification, and species boundaries and generic allocations across the Procatopodinae continue to be refined.

The specific epithet stictopleuron derives from Greek: stiktos (spotted, pricked) and pleuron (side, flank), describing a spotted or stippled lateral pattern. The name directly references the fish's markings and is purely descriptive.

Morphology

Hylopanchax stictopleuron is a slender, small-bodied lampeye of the type typical for the Procatopodinae — a laterally compressed, streamlined fish with large eyes, a terminal or slightly upturned mouth, and a single dorsal fin set well back on the body, roughly opposite the anal fin. Precise published maximum length data are sparse for this species, but congeners in Hylopanchax are generally small, typically reaching 1–2 in standard length at maturity, placing the species in the micro-to-small range of killifish.

The most prominent feature is the supraocular light organ — a patch of guanine-rich reflective tissue situated immediately above the pupil. This structure, shared by all lampeyes, functions in intraspecific signalling, appearing as a brilliant blue-green or golden iridescent crescent under certain lighting angles. The specific epithet stictopleuron suggests that the flanks carry distinct spotting or stippling, which in lampeyes is often expressed as a series of small metallic or dark flecks along the lateral midline.

Sexual dimorphism follows the lampeye pattern: males tend to be more intensely coloured, with the light organ more vividly expressed and finnage often more developed or pointed, while females are plainer, deeper-bellied when gravid, and generally slightly more robust.

Habitat

Hylopanchax stictopleuron is a Central African species associated with the Congo basin drainage, a region of equatorial lowland forest cut by slow rivers, tributary streams, swamps, and seasonally flooded forest margins. Lampeyes of the Hylopanchax lineage typically inhabit the margins and shallower reaches of permanent water bodies — the edges of small forest streams, surface layers of swampy backwaters, or flooded root tangles where overhead canopy limits light penetration.

Water conditions in typical Congo basin forest streams lean toward soft and mildly acidic — low conductivity, pH commonly in the 5.5–7.0 range, temperatures reflecting the equatorial climate but buffered by forest shade, typically in the 72–79 °F band. These are permanent-water habitats: unlike annual killifish of open savanna, lampeyes require water year-round and their eggs do not enter diapause. The precise type locality and micro-habitat preferences of this species in particular are not well documented in available literature.

As a small surface-oriented fish, H. stictopleuron likely occupies the upper water column in calm or slow-moving sections, where the light organ is most effectively displayed and where surface invertebrates provide food.

Feeding

Hylopanchax stictopleuron is expected to be an opportunistic micro-predator in the manner of all small procatopodine lampeyes. In nature, the diet is primarily composed of small invertebrates taken at or near the water surface — aquatic insect larvae, emerging insects and their fallen terrestrial counterparts, small crustaceans, and zooplankton. The upturned or terminal mouth is adapted for surface and mid-water feeding rather than bottom foraging.

In aquarium conditions, closely related lampeyes accept a wide range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and chironomid (bloodworm) larvae. Dried foods of appropriate size are often taken once the fish is settled, but live or frozen prey promotes peak colouration and condition in this group.

Mating

As a non-annual lampeye, Hylopanchax stictopleuron reproduces continuously through the year rather than compressing its entire reproductive effort into a brief seasonal window. The lampeye mating system is one of persistent, low-intensity spawning: pairs or groups engage in brief courtship sequences in which the male displays the supraocular light organ and flares his unpaired fins to court the female, with the iridescent eye-spot functioning as a species-recognition and mate-quality signal.

Spawning is adhesive egg deposition — the pair assume a side-by-side posture and press together as a small number of eggs are released and fertilised simultaneously, the eggs adhering to fine-leaved plants, roots, or other surfaces. Unlike bubble-nest builders or mouthbrooders, lampeyes provide no subsequent parental care; the adhesive coating on the eggs offers modest protection through concealment among vegetation rather than guarding. Courtship and spawning can recur daily or near-daily, making these fish persistent, low-volume producers rather than mass spawners.

Breeding

Under aquarium conditions, Hylopanchax stictopleuron can be bred using methods standard for West and Central African non-annual lampeyes. A densely planted breeding aquarium with fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Taxiphyllum species, or spawning mops) provides adhesion sites for the eggs. A small group of one male to two or more females distributes spawning effort and reduces harassment of individual females.

Eggs are small and relatively transparent, and hatch in approximately 10–14 days depending on temperature. The fry are tiny and require appropriately scaled first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercially prepared fry foods — for the first one to two weeks before graduating to Artemia nauplii. Because the adults may eat eggs and fry if left together, either removing the adults after a week of conditioning or harvesting the egg-bearing plants to a separate rearing vessel improves survival rates. Water quality in the rearing vessel must be kept clean but not heavily aerated, as the fry are fragile and sensitive to turbulence.

Detailed captive breeding records for this specific species are sparse in the published literature, and the above represents the expected pattern for the genus and subfamily rather than species-specific documentation.

In the aquarium

Hylopanchax stictopleuron is at best an occasional offering in specialist killifish circles and is essentially absent from the general aquarium trade. Hobbyists interested in this species would most likely source it through killifish association fish rooms or exchanges, where West and Central African lampeyes are sometimes circulated among enthusiasts.

A small, species or near-species aquarium of 10–15 US gal is appropriate, densely planted and with a tightly fitting lid — lampeyes are capable surface jumpers. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.2, low conductivity) matching the soft Congo basin environment suits this fish well, with temperature maintained at 72–79 °F. Subdued lighting that allows the supraocular light organ to display effectively, combined with a dark substrate and background, brings out the fish's colouration. A small group of six or more individuals encourages natural schooling behaviour and reduces individual stress.

Tankmates, if any, should be peaceful species of similar or smaller size and matching water requirements — other small lampeyes or non-aggressive West African micro-fish. H. stictopleuron is itself a peaceful micro-fish and unsuitable for sharing space with larger or boisterous species.

Conservation

Hylopanchax stictopleuron has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its status is therefore recorded as Not Evaluated (NE), meaning no formal population data, trend analysis, or threat assessment has been published under the IUCN framework. This is not uncommon for small, geographically restricted African killifish — the group as a whole is taxonomically complex, many species are known only from original description material, and monitoring programs rarely extend to micro-fish in Central African forest streams.

The Congo basin, which likely encompasses this species' range, faces considerable and escalating pressure from deforestation driven by subsistence agriculture, artisanal mining activity (particularly in the eastern Congo), and infrastructure development. Forest streams dependent on intact canopy cover are vulnerable to sedimentation, temperature increase, and flow alteration when surrounding forest is cleared. Small-bodied, potentially range-restricted lampeyes with narrow ecological tolerances could be disproportionately affected by such changes even if no targeted harvest or collection pressure exists.

Given the near-complete absence of published data on this species' distribution, abundance, and population structure, responsible conservation treatment is to apply the precautionary principle: to avoid collection from the wild for the aquarium trade unless captive populations are already established, and to treat any aquarium specimens as conservation-relevant individuals worth maintaining and propagating through the killifish hobby network.
