Taxonomy & naming
Hylopanchax silvestris was described by Poll and Lambert in 1965, placed in the genus Hylopanchax — a group of small lampeye killifishes (family Poeciliidae, subfamily Procatopodinae) endemic to the Congo River system and adjacent western Central African drainages. The authority is rendered in parentheses because the original combination differed from the current one. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Hylopanchax silvestris (Poll & Lambert, 1965).
A modern genus-level revision by Bragança et al. (2021), published in the Journal of Fish Biology, provided an updated diagnosis for Hylopanchax and confirmed the placement of H. silvestris as the most widely distributed species in the genus, recorded from multiple localities in the Middle Congo basin in the Cuvette. The study characterised Hylopanchax by its small size and the iridescent supraocular light organs from which the lampeye group takes its name — photoreceptive structures above the eye that flash blue-green or blue-white iridescence under angled light.
The species epithet silvestris is Latin for 'of the forest' or 'woodland', a reference to the forested river margins and swamp habitats in which the species lives.
Morphology
Hylopanchax silvestris is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum standard length of around 1.5 in (FishBase), placing it firmly in the 'micro' size bracket typical of procatopodine lampeyes. The body plan is elongate with a slightly upturned mouth, characteristic of a surface-oriented or mid-water feeder. Scales are cycloid, moderate in size, and extend to the head.
The defining feature of the species — shared with all Hylopanchax — is the iridescent light organ situated dorsal to the eye. This structure, a layer of reflective iridophores, produces a vivid blue-green or silvery-blue flash that is highly conspicuous in the dimly lit forest stream habitat and is used in intraspecific signalling. Males tend to be more intensely coloured than females, with deeper body tints and stronger expression of the light organ; females are typically fuller-bodied and somewhat plainer. The fins are translucent to lightly pigmented.
Habitat
Hylopanchax silvestris occupies permanent freshwater habitats in the central Congo River basin, with confirmed records from the Cuvette region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and from the Kasaï River drainage. The Bragança et al. (2021) study documents its occurrence at several localities across the Middle Congo basin, making it the most geographically widespread Hylopanchax species. Additional records associate the species with the Odzala-Kokoua National Park area of the neighbouring Republic of Congo.
The preferred habitat is slow-moving forest streams, swampy margins, and river-edge vegetation — calm, permanent water bodies under closed-canopy rainforest. Like most procatopodine lampeyes, H. silvestris is not a blackwater specialist in the strict sense; Congo basin forest streams span a range of chemistry from clear tea-coloured water to more neutral conditions, and the fish schools in the upper water column near surface vegetation and submerged roots. This permanent-water, forest-stream ecology distinguishes it clearly from the annual killifishes that exploit seasonal pools.
Feeding
Hylopanchax silvestris is a micro-predator typical of small lampeyes: it feeds primarily on tiny invertebrates taken at or near the water surface and in the mid-water column. The upturned mouth is well suited to taking small insects, larvae, and zooplankton from the surface film — mosquito larvae, small chironomid midges, and microcrustaceans form the probable staple diet in the wild.
In the aquarium, the species readily accepts appropriately sized live and frozen foods: Daphnia, baby brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worms, and finely crushed dry foods. Because adults reach only 1.5 in, food particle size is a practical consideration; large pellets or chunks are ignored. Frequent, small meals suit the continuous-foraging strategy natural to schooling mid-water feeders.
Mating
Hylopanchax silvestris is a non-annual killifish with a continuous, plant-spawning reproductive strategy — it does not produce diapausing eggs and has no association with ephemeral seasonal pools. The genus is characterised by this mode: adults persist in permanent water and spawn repeatedly over extended periods rather than in a single annual cycle tied to dry-season survival of buried eggs.
Males court females with lateral displays that prominently feature the iridescent supraocular light organ — the flash of the light organ under the dim, directionally filtered light of forest-stream habitats serves as the primary courtship signal. Dominant males compete for access to females in loosely structured groups. Spawning involves brief pairings in which a small number of moderately adhesive eggs are deposited at each contact, scattered among fine-leaved plants, fibrous roots, or moss — the classic procatopodine adhesive-egg strategy.
Breeding
As a non-annual continuous spawner, Hylopanchax silvestris produces clutches of relatively few eggs at each spawning event, repeated over days and weeks. The eggs are moderately adhesive and attach to fine plant matter or root tangles rather than being buried in substrate. Incubation is temperature-dependent but generally moderate — aquarium experience with the related genus Poropanchax suggests a period of several days to two weeks at tropical temperatures.
Fry hatch as miniature versions of the adults and are capable swimmers from the outset; unlike annual killifish they do not require storage in moist peat. Because eggs and fry are scattered through vegetation rather than gathered in one location, a heavily planted spawning tank with Java moss or similar fine-textured substrate gives the best yield. Adults will eat eggs and fry opportunistically, so separating eggs or growing out fry in a separate vessel is recommended. Juveniles accept the same micro-foods as adults from an early age.
In the aquarium
Hylopanchax silvestris is an appealing specialist species for the killifish hobbyist: tiny, peaceable, and iridescently beautiful when seen in a group under appropriate lighting. It is best kept in a species or genus aquarium or paired with other small, non-competitive Congo basin fish of similar size. A school of eight or more individuals allows the full expression of the light-organ display and the loose social dynamics typical of schooling lampeyes.
The tank should be densely planted with fine-leaved plants and floating cover to replicate the surface vegetation of forest-stream habitats; dark substrate enhances the contrast of the iridescent light organs. Lighting should be moderate — too intense and the fish tend to shelter; angled sidelight or dim overhead light best shows the supraocular flash. Water should be soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.2), and warm (75–81 °F), with gentle flow and good surface oxygen exchange. The species is not demanding by killifish standards, but like most small lampeyes it appreciates stability and is sensitive to ammonia and nitrite in the way that small-bodied fish with a high surface-area-to-volume ratio invariably are.
Hylopanchax silvestris is rarely encountered in the mainstream aquarium trade and is mainly kept and bred by specialist killifish societies. Acquiring stock through the American Killifish Association (AKA) or equivalent national societies is the most reliable route.
Conservation
Hylopanchax silvestris has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its apparent distribution across the central Congo basin — the Cuvette region of the DRC and the Kasaï drainage — spans a large area, and it is the most widespread member of its genus. The Congo basin itself remains one of the most hydrologically intact large river systems on Earth, with vast areas of lowland rainforest still intact.
Nonetheless, several pressures bear on the forests and wetlands in which H. silvestris lives. Deforestation for agriculture and logging in the DRC and Republic of Congo removes the closed canopy that moderates stream temperature and sediment loads; sedimentation from land clearance degrades the clear-water, low-turbidity conditions that lampeyes prefer. The Odzala-Kokoua National Park population has some formal protection, but the broader Cuvette region has patchy conservation coverage. Because most small procatopodine killifishes are under-surveyed, apparent range size may not accurately reflect population security. A formal IUCN assessment, paired with updated distribution surveys, would be a valuable contribution to understanding the conservation needs of Central African lampeye fishes.
