Hypsolebias flammeus was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1989, and the authority is given in parentheses following standard nomenclatural convention to record that the species name has been moved since its original description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid combination Hypsolebias flammeus (Costa, 1989). The species belongs to the family Rivulidae and is placed in the subfamily Cynolebiinae — the South American annual killifishes — together with genera such as Cynolebias, Austrolebias, and Simpsonichthys.
The genus Hypsolebias is a group of seasonal-pool killifishes distributed across the central Brazilian plateau, generally associated with the river basins draining the Cerrado biome. The specific epithet flammeus is Latin for 'flame-coloured' or 'fiery', a direct reference to the vivid red pigmentation of the male's dorsolateral head region. The American Killifish Association classifies this species in Class 3 (South American annual killies), consistent with its Cynolebiinae membership and annual breeding biology.
Morphology
Males reach approximately 2.5 in total length (FishBase), and the species shows the pronounced sexual dimorphism typical of annual killifishes. Males are vividly coloured: the dorsolateral regions of the head are red or orange-red, the flanks carry blue iridescent spots, and some fin rays are elongated and filamentous. The combination of fiery head colouration and blue-spotted flanks gives the species its epithet and makes males among the more ornamental members of the genus.
Females are considerably plainer, exhibiting the cryptic brownish or greyish ground colour found in most female Cynolebiinae — an adaptation to spending time near the substrate in shallow, often turbid seasonal pools where camouflage is more valuable than display. The body is deep and compressed as in other Hypsolebias species, with the dorsal and anal fins set well back on the body, and the mouth directed slightly upward.
Habitat
Hypsolebias flammeus occupies temporary pools and seasonally flooded areas along the banks of the Paranã and Tocantins rivers in the Brazilian states of Goiás and Tocantins, as documented in the IUCN assessment. These habitats are characteristic of the Cerrado — Brazil's vast interior savanna — where seasonal rainfall creates shallow, isolated pools in low-lying areas, road margins, and floodplain depressions. The pools fill with the summer rains and dry completely during the dry season, typically lasting only a few months before disappearing.
Collection localities recorded by the American Killifish Association include Nova Roma (Goiás), Peixe, Rio Paranã (Goiás), and Rio Bezerra, along with multiple other collection points in Goiás and Tocantins states. These waters are typically shallow, warm, and often tannin-stained or turbid with suspended detritus; the substrate is soft mud or peat-like organic material into which the fish spawn. Feeding
Hypsolebias flammeus is a carnivore, as is typical of Cynolebiinae killies. In the wild, annual killifishes of this subfamily feed primarily on small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, worms, and zooplankton — that colonise seasonal pools rapidly at the onset of the rains. Mating
As a member of the Cynolebiinae, Hypsolebias flammeus is a substrate-spawning annual killi. Males display intensely to females in the shallow water column, using their striking red-and-blue colouration in combination with fin-spreading and lateral displays. Rival males compete vigorously for access to females; the elongated filamentous fin rays of mature males likely serve as ornaments in intersexual selection within the brief window the pools are habitable.
When a female is receptive, the pair move together toward the soft substrate. The male presses alongside the female and the two fish dive into the mud or peat in a characteristic spawning act — the ventral fins and caudal area are driven into the substrate while eggs and milt are deposited simultaneously at depth. This substrate-diving behaviour is the definitive reproductive mode of South American annual killies and distinguishes them sharply from non-annual plant-spawning killies.
Breeding
After each spawning dive, the fertilised eggs are left buried in the substrate. The parent fish continue spawning over the available season, depositing eggs across the pool floor. The Brazilian Cerrado has lost more than half its original extent to agriculture and development, and the seasonal pool habitats that annual killies depend on are disproportionately affected. Drainage for agriculture, conversion of floodplain margins to cattle pasture, road construction that alters hydrology, and the introduction of exotic species such as mosquitofish (Gambusia) all degrade or eliminate the temporary-pool ecosystems that Cerrado annuals require.
