Hypsolebias adornatus is a small, brilliantly coloured annual killifish endemic to seasonal pools in the São Francisco River basin of Bahia, Brazil. Like all members of the genus, it completes its entire life cycle — from egg buried in soft mud to sexually mature adult — within the span of a single wet season, dying when the pool dries and leaving behind a cohort of drought-resistant eggs buried in the substrate. It was originally described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 2000 as Simpsonichthys adornatus and referred to the genus Hypsolebias in Costa's 2011 revision. The IUCN assessed it as Vulnerable in 2018, reflecting its highly restricted range, dependence on ephemeral habitats, and the threats posed by agricultural expansion in Brazil's northeastern interior.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypsolebias adornatus was described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 2000, originally placed in the genus Simpsonichthys as Simpsonichthys adornatus. A subsequent revision of South American annual killifishes by Costa in 2011 established the genus Hypsolebias as distinct from Simpsonichthys, and adornatus was transferred accordingly; the parenthetical authority (Costa, 2000) indicates that the species name has been moved from the genus in which it was first described. The Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Hypsolebias adornatus (Costa, 2000).

The type locality is Sitio do Matto, Bahia, Brazil — a single collecting site in the São Francisco drainage, underlining the species' narrow endemic status. Hypsolebias adornatus belongs to the H. magnificus species group, a clade of visually striking annuals within the suborder Cyprinodontoidei. The genus Hypsolebias as currently constituted is placed in the family Rivulidae (South American killifishes), the largest family of annual killifish in the world.

The specific epithet adornatus is Latin for 'adorned' or 'decorated', an apt name for a species whose males display striking iridescent colour patterns used in courtship and rival assessment.

Morphology

Males of Hypsolebias adornatus reach approximately 2 in standard length (SL); females are slightly smaller, reaching around 1.5 in SL. One source (itrainsfishes.net) reports a maximum recorded size of 2.5 in, likely reflecting exceptional or captive specimens. The body form is typically rivulid: moderately elongate, laterally compressed, with the dorsal fin set well back and meristic counts noted as approximately D 30.1, A 22.5 in the original descriptions.

Males are the more colourful sex, bearing the iridescent lateral patterning typical of the H. magnificus group — a mosaic of blues, greens, and reds arranged in vertical or oblique rows or blotches across the flank, with red or orange markings on the unpaired fins. Females are more cryptically coloured, predominantly brownish with less conspicuous patterning — a common pattern across annual killifishes where females need to remain inconspicuous while guarding eggs in shallow substrate and males compete intensely for mating opportunities.

Habitat

Hypsolebias adornatus inhabits seasonal, ephemeral pools and shallow floodplain depressions within the São Francisco River basin of Bahia state, northeastern Brazil. These pools form during the wet season when rain fills low-lying areas in the cerrado and caatinga transition zone; they dry completely during the dry months, often for six months or more. The substrate is typically soft mud, detritus, and decaying plant material — the medium in which the eggs must overwinter in diapause.

Water conditions in these pools are warm and poorly oxygenated by conventional standards; adult killifish tolerate wide temperature swings as pools heat up in the dry-season margins. The habitat is highly seasonal, meaning the adult fish present at any one time represent a single annual cohort — an adaptation to environments where no permanent water body exists to support a year-round resident population.

Feeding

The short growing season places a premium on efficient energy acquisition — fish must grow from newly hatched fry to sexually mature adults capable of spawning within weeks, and the diet must support that rapid growth.

In the aquarium, the species accepts a wide range of live and frozen invertebrate foods: Artemia nauplii are the standard first food for fry (as noted by itrainsfishes.net), progressing to adult Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm, and similar items for adults. Small dry foods formulated for killifish may be accepted by conditioned adults, but live and frozen foods should form the dietary core to maintain colour and condition in breeding fish.

Mating

As a fully annual killifish in the H. magnificus group, Hypsolebias adornatus reproduces through the characteristic annual killi mating strategy: pairs engage in courtship display in the water column, during which the male uses his iridescent flank patterning to signal fitness to females and to intimidate rival males. Courtship is active and often vigorous; the male manoeuvres alongside or above the female, quivering and displaying.

Once a female is receptive, the pair move together downward toward the substrate and the spawning dive occurs: both fish press into the soft mud or peat together, burying themselves partially or completely to deposit a single egg deep in the substrate. This dive-and-deposit sequence is repeated multiple times over a spawning session. The eggs are firm-shelled and adhesive, designed to be lodged in anoxic substrate where they will remain through the dry season. Breeding

In the aquarium, breeders manage this cycle by spawning the fish over a peat or coir substrate, then removing and partially drying the medium for storage — typically at around 75–79 °F in a sealed bag or container — for the duration of the diapause period. After the storage period, the medium is re-wetted with soft, slightly acidic water, and the fry hatch within hours to a day. Hypsolebias adornatus is kept by specialist killifish hobbyists rather than the general fishkeeping trade, in part because of the specialised care its annual life cycle requires and in part because of its restricted availability — it is a less-common Hypsolebias relative to the more widely distributed members of the group. The American Killifish Association classifies it as a Class 3 South American Annual, which reflects both the reproductive mode and the care requirements expected in AKA competitive shows.

The aquarium setup for this species is simple but must be fit for purpose: a small, well-covered tank of 5.5–10 US gal with soft, slightly acidic water, subdued lighting, and a layer of peat or coir on the substrate or in a spawning container. Males are aggressive toward each other and should be kept in a harem arrangement (one male to two or more females) or as a single pair. Water temperature of 70–79 °F suits the species; warmer water accelerates the life cycle but shortens total lifespan. Standard annual-killi husbandry — regular harvesting of the peat substrate, proper dry storage of eggs, and re-wetting to trigger hatching — is the core management skill the keeper must develop.

The species' attractive male colouration and the engaging biology of the annual life cycle make it rewarding for the dedicated hobbyist, and it is circulated through killifish society networks. Its IUCN Vulnerable status and restricted range make responsible captive husbandry an important complement to the wild population.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypsolebias adornatus as Vulnerable (VU) in 2018. The assessment reflects the species' extremely restricted range within the São Francisco River basin of Bahia, its dependence on ephemeral pool habitats that are sensitive to land-use change, and the broader trajectory of habitat loss across Brazil's northeastern interior.

The São Francisco basin faces significant pressure from agricultural conversion — particularly soy, sugarcane, and pasture expansion — which drains and fills seasonal wetlands and disrupts the hydrological regime that supports annual killifishes. Channelisation and water extraction for irrigation further reduce the availability and permanence of the shallow pools these fish require. The caatinga and cerrado ecotones of Bahia where adornatus occurs have been heavily impacted by decades of land clearance. As a single-locality endemic known from Sitio do Matto, any destruction of the pools at or near the type locality could eliminate a significant fraction of the species' known population.

Captive populations maintained by killifish enthusiasts through AKA-affiliated societies and specialist breeders provide an important insurance population, though the long-term viability of ex situ holdings depends on continued hobbyist engagement and exchange of breeding stock. Formal protection of the type-locality habitat and surveys to establish the full extent of the species' range remain conservation priorities.
