Hypsolebias harmonicus is a small annual killifish endemic to the semi-arid Caatinga region of northeastern Brazil, known from seasonal pools along the left bank of the middle São Francisco River near Bom Jesus da Lapa, Bahia state. Like all members of its genus it lives a compressed, urgent life — hatching when ephemeral pools refill with rain, maturing in weeks, and producing drought-resistant eggs buried in the mud before the pool evaporates entirely. Males display a colour pattern distinctive enough to earn the species its epithet: harmonicus, Latin for harmonious, acknowledging a peculiarly well-integrated arrangement of pigment bands and spots across the flanks. The IUCN considers it Vulnerable, an expected fate for a species known from a single restricted drainage within one of Brazil's most water-stressed biomes.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypsolebias harmonicus was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2010, originally under the name Simpsonichthys harmonicus — one of several Caatinga annual killifishes that Costa placed in the now-deprecated genus Simpsonichthys before subsequent revisions consolidated that group into Hypsolebias. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the accepted combination as Hypsolebias harmonicus (Costa, 2010), with the authority in parentheses to signal the generic transfer. GBIF likewise accepts this name, listing Simpsonichthys harmonicus Costa, 2010 as the primary synonym.

The type locality is a seasonal pool on the left bank of the middle São Francisco River, approximately 7 mi from Bom Jesus da Lapa, Bahia, at an altitude of 1434 ft — recorded in field notes as highway code BR-349. This locality places the species squarely within the São Francisco River basin, Brazil's longest entirely internal drainage. Within Hypsolebias, the species is considered most closely allied to H. magnificus and H. picturatus, a grouping of medium-sized Caatinga annuals sharing a similar fin-ray formula and geographic focus on the middle-to-upper São Francisco basin.

The specific epithet harmonicus derives from the Latin harmonicus, meaning harmonious or in accord, applied by Costa in reference to the male's colour pattern, in which bands, spots, and iridescent elements are distributed across the body in a notably balanced, well-proportioned arrangement.

Morphology

Hypsolebias harmonicus is a compact, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 2 in standard length, with males slightly larger and considerably more colourful than females. The body is deep relative to length (body depth approximately 35.9% SL) and the head is blunt, typical of the genus. Meristic counts recorded from the type series are: dorsal-fin rays 22–24 (males) / 14–16 (females); anal-fin rays 19–21 (males) / 17–19 (females); caudal-fin rays 21–22; lateral-line scales 26–27.

Diagnostically, males of H. harmonicus are distinguished from related species by the pectoral fin reaching to between the bases of the 4th and 5th anal-fin rays, and by the caudal fin length representing 31.2–33.2% SL. The pre-dorsal distance is approximately 45.9% SL and the pre-pelvic distance 44.2–47.6% SL in males. These proportions are consistent across the type series and provide reliable separation from the sister taxa H. magnificus and H. picturatus under direct comparison.

Males in full colour display the complex pigment pattern that inspired the species name: a mosaic of iridescent scales and contrasting bands across the flanks, with fin colour that amplifies the display during courtship. Females are considerably plainer, brown-toned with subdued or absent flank markings — the strong sexual dichromatism typical of annual Hypsolebias across the Caatinga.

Habitat

The known range of H. harmonicus is restricted to seasonal, rain-fed pools within the Caatinga biome along the middle São Francisco River, Bahia state, northeastern Brazil. The type-locality pool was described at the time of collection as approximately 19.5 in deep, with turbid brownish-yellow water — a profile consistent with Caatinga seasonal pools generally: shallow, highly productive when flooded, rich in suspended sediments, and with soft, organic-rich substrates of peat, mud, and detritus that the fish requires for egg deposition.

The Caatinga is Brazil's driest biome — a seasonally xeric mosaic of thorn scrub and dry forest subject to highly irregular and concentrated rainfall. Seasonal pools in this landscape are transient: they fill abruptly during the short wet season (roughly October to March in southern Bahia) and dry completely during the prolonged dry season, leaving no permanent water. Water chemistry in these pools is poorly buffered and variable; the brownish-yellow colouration suggests some dissolved organic matter but the habitat is not classically blackwater. Temperatures rise rapidly during the dry-season approach and can reach extreme values in shallow remnant water before full desiccation.

Because this species is known from a single locality complex, the total extent of occurrence is very small. Any hydrological change — groundwater extraction for irrigation, catchment deforestation reducing wet-season flood pulses, or road construction altering drainage — could eliminate the known population entirely.

Feeding

Like other annual killifishes of the Caatinga, H. harmonicus is an opportunistic carnivore in the wild, exploiting the flush of invertebrate productivity that accompanies pool refilling after the dry season. Small aquatic invertebrates — chironomid larvae, microcrustaceans, mosquito larvae, and worms — form the bulk of the natural diet in the brief window between pool rehydration and desiccation. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.2 ± 0.4 for the species, confirming a carnivore positioned in the lower-middle predator tier.

In captivity, H. harmonicus accepts live and frozen foods without difficulty. Newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), daphnia, cyclops, micro-worms, and small chironomid larvae are all taken eagerly. Small pelleted foods may be accepted by established individuals but should not form the dietary base for this short-lived species — high-protein live and frozen foods support faster conditioning, more vivid male coloration, and better spawning output. Given the naturally brief lifespan, a well-fed fish reaches breeding condition in weeks; nutritional deficiencies during that window are not recoverable.

Mating

Hypsolebias harmonicus is an annual killifish that spawns by substrate-diving — the pair together drive head-first into the soft peat or mud substrate, releasing eggs and sperm simultaneously while momentarily buried. This behaviour, shared across the annual Rivulidae of South America, is an adaptation to a life history in which eggs must be deposited below the sediment surface to survive the complete desiccation of the pool overhead.

Male courtship in Hypsolebias follows a pattern common to the genus: the male orients beside and below the female, extending his fins and displaying his flank coloration at close range. Receptive females hold position while the male nudges her toward a patch of soft substrate; both fish then accelerate downward together, pressing into the sediment for the brief spawning act before returning to open water. The pair may spawn multiple times during a single session across several substrate sites.

Dimorphism is pronounced and makes sexing straightforward from a few weeks of age: males develop the full chromatic display — iridescent flank scales and coloured fins — well before reaching maximum size, while females remain brown-toned. Males may compete aggressively for access to females but rarely cause serious injury in adequately planted or decorated tanks.

Breeding

The eggs of H. harmonicus are deposited and abandoned in the substrate, where they enter a state of arrested development (diapause) that allows survival through months of dry-season desiccation. In the wild, the eggs remain in dry soil until the next wet season floods the pool; hatchlings emerge rapidly once water returns, begin feeding within days, and reach sexual maturity in five to six weeks — one of the shortest generation times of any vertebrate. Wild fish rarely exceed eight months of age; captive individuals may reach ten to twelve months.

Hobbyists replicate this cycle using a peat or coconut coir spawning medium placed on the tank floor. After one to three months of regular spawning, the medium is removed, lightly pressed to remove excess water, sealed in a plastic bag labelled with the date, and stored at room temperature (approximately 72–79 °F). Egg development in storage takes eight to ten weeks at 77–84 °F; cooler storage of 70–75 °F slows development and extends the incubation window. Re-wetting the medium with aged, slightly soft water triggers hatching. Fry are large enough at emergence to accept newly hatched Artemia nauplii immediately, and the first spawning can occur as early as five to six weeks post-hatch.

Because wild populations are small and geographically restricted, hobbyist-maintained lines of H. harmonicus carry genuine conservation value. Maintaining accurate locality records — or at minimum the collection code from the original import — preserves the genetic integrity of distinct populations and supports potential reintroduction programmes if wild habitat is lost.

In the aquarium

Hypsolebias harmonicus is a good choice for experienced killifish keepers who understand the annual life cycle but is not a beginner's fish — the peat-storage regime, the short lifespan, and the need to manage successive hatching cohorts require planning. A dedicated species tank of 10–15 US gal per pair or trio is appropriate; the tank need not be large but should have a tightly fitting lid (killies are capable jumpers) and soft ambient lighting that flatters the male's display colours.

Water conditions should approximate the soft, slightly acidic to neutral profile of Caatinga seasonal pools: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, soft to moderately hard. The tank floor should carry a layer of peat or coir for spawning; a sparse planting of floating plants (Salvinia, Riccia) reduces surface glare and provides shelter. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter is ideal — as these fish come from pools with little flow and are sensitive to strong currents.

H. harmonicus is too small and active for mixed community setups; it is best kept with others of the same species or with similarly sized, non-aggressive killifishes in a specialist fish room context. The American Killifish Association (AKA) classifies it in Class 3 South American Annuals for show purposes, and maintaining it through complete annual cycles — peat storage, hatching, rearing, conditioning, repeat — is a rewarding discipline that engages directly with the evolutionary biology of one of freshwater ichthyology's most remarkable adaptations.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypsolebias harmonicus as Vulnerable under criterion D2 in 2018, a status assigned on the basis of a very small area of occupancy — the species is known from a single locality or small cluster of seasonal pools in a restricted stretch of the middle São Francisco basin, Bahia, Brazil. Criterion D2 flags species with a very restricted extent of occurrence or number of locations such that any plausible future threat could push them toward Critically Endangered or Extinction within a short timeframe.

The threats facing H. harmonicus are those facing Caatinga seasonal-pool fishes broadly: groundwater extraction for agriculture and municipal supply lowers the water table and reduces the flood pulses that recharge the pools; catchment deforestation and soil compaction alter the hydrology of the surrounding Caatinga, reducing infiltration and the slow seasonal seepage that maintains pool depth long enough for the annual cohort to complete its lifecycle; and road construction or drainage works can eliminate individual pools permanently. The introduction of exotic species — particularly Gambusia (mosquitofish) introduced for mosquito control — poses a direct predation and competition threat to annual killies across northeastern Brazil.

The IUCN assessment credit goes to Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), the Brazilian federal conservation agency. Captive populations maintained by AKA members and European killi enthusiasts serve as an important insurance population, though they are only meaningful if localities are recorded with precision and stocks are not mixed across collection points.
