Moema quiii is one of the largest annual killifishes in the world — males exceeding 6.5 in total length — native to the seasonal forest pools of the Tambopata region in southeastern Peru, where the Ese Eja people knew it long before science did and named it the 'hummingbird of the water'. Like every member of its genus, it lives an entire life in the span of a rainy season: the adult fish spawn by diving together into the mud, bury their diapausing eggs in the substrate, and then die as the pool evaporates. The eggs rest through months of dry season and hatch when the first rains return.

Taxonomy & naming

The genus Moema was established to accommodate a set of large South American annual killifishes whose distribution centres on the upper Amazon and its major southern tributaries. Neotropical Ichthyology has recognised approximately 20 valid species within the genus, and Jean H. Huber (Killi-Data) has been a central authority in resolving the group's taxonomy. Moema quiii is the largest species in the genus by recorded total length.

The formal authority attribution appears as '(Myers, 1927)' in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, following the rule that parentheses are added when a species has been transferred from its original genus assignment to the current one. The holotype male measured 3 in standard length (4 in total length) and was collected from Fundo Shape on the Río Tambopata, 9 mi upriver from Puerto Maldonado, Peru (12.733°S, 69.217°W, 459 ft elevation).

The specific epithet honours an unusual etymology. 'Quiii' derives from the Ese Eja word 'Qui-i-i', a phonetic rendering of their term for this fish, which translates as 'hummingbird of the water' — drawn from 'Qua'i-i', the Ese Eja word for hummingbird. The species was named in part through shaman tradition, in honour of Belinda Peck, reflecting the deep cultural familiarity the Ese Eja of the Tambopata have with this striking fish.

Morphology

Moema quiii is the giant of its genus. FishBase and Killi-Data both report males reaching approximately 6.5 in total length, with females considerably smaller at roughly 5 in TL. The holotype male (the largest specimen used to anchor the species description) measured 4 in TL, indicating that the maximum reported size reflects fully mature, well-developed adults.

As in other large annual killifishes, there is pronounced sexual dimorphism in both size and colouration. Males are substantially larger and far more vividly coloured, carrying the iridescent flanks and elaborate fin patterning typical of the genus. Females are smaller and cryptically coloured, as is typical for annual killifishes where females must be inconspicuous at the pool bottom during spawning dives. The fins of adult males are elongated and ornate relative to the female's plainer, rounder fins.

The body form is robust and laterally compressed, with the relatively large scales and upturned mouth characteristic of Moema, reflecting a species that feeds at or near the surface in shallow pools. The caudal fin of males in full colour is one of the most striking in the genus.

Habitat

Moema quiii is known from the Río Madre de Dios drainage in the Tambopata region of southeastern Peru. The type locality lies on the Río Tambopata approximately 9 mi upriver of Puerto Maldonado, and at least one additional population has been recorded roughly 12 mi northeast of the type locality. The elevation at the type locality is approximately 459 ft above sea level, placing the species in the sub-Andean transition zone where lowland Amazonian forest begins to climb toward the Andean foothills.

The habitat is highly specific: large, temporary seasonal pools in deep rainforest, with muddy bottoms and no surface inlet or outlet connections. Killi-Data records that all confirmed habitats are found only in deep shade under closed forest canopy. Pool depth reaches approximately 3 ft at the height of the rainy season. Water chemistry is soft and acidic, derived from rainwater and the decomposition of forest organic matter; water quality data specify 'rainwater and organic compounds only, no sediment'. Temperature averages approximately 79 °F at the water surface; air temperatures in the region cycle between 26 and 100 °F across the season.

The seasonal pools are shared with other fish in a successional pattern tied to the filling and drying cycle. Early in the season, while water volume is low and before Moema quiii becomes established, the pygmy killifish Aphyolebias rubrocaudatus is the dominant annual killifish. Later in the season, as water deepens and the pools mature, the community shifts to include larger predatory fish: Hoplosternum (an armoured catfish), and the characid predators Hoplias and Erythrinus. Moema quiii overlaps with these species at the peak water level.

Feeding

Moema quiii is an active predator. Killi-Data records that the wild diet consists of small fish, and that feeding is concentrated at night — an unusual degree of temporal specificity for a killifish that suggests a nocturnal or crepuscular hunting strategy in the forest pools where overhead canopy reduces daylight penetration.

The combination of large size (males to 6.5 in), a robust jaw, and a documented piscivorous diet positions this species firmly at the apex of its seasonal pool community. In the aquarium this translates to a straightforward feeding profile: meaty foods including live or frozen small fish, large chironomid larvae, earthworms, and prepared carnivore pellets of appropriate size. Smaller tankmates and smaller killifishes in the same enclosure would be at risk from an adult male.

Mating

Moema quiii is an annual killifish, and its mating system is organised entirely around the substrate-spawning mode that defines annual killifishes: both the male and female dive together into the soft muddy substrate of the pool bottom to deposit eggs. The spawning dive is a coordinated act between a pair, with the male pressing alongside the female as both fish push down into the mud; eggs and sperm are released simultaneously within the substrate and the eggs are left buried as the pair return to open water.

Males compete intensely for spawning access, and Killi-Data records that aggression between males is strong. A well-set-up aquarium with clear visual separation between male territories, or the use of a single dominant male with multiple females, reduces injury from this competition. Males are described as strong jumpers and capable of brief overland travel — a tight-fitting lid is essential. The urgency of reproduction is a product of the species' life history: wild fish live for one rainy season, and reproductive drive is correspondingly intense throughout the brief adult stage.

Breeding

After spawning dives, the buried eggs enter diapause — a state of developmental arrest that allows them to survive the months-long dry season when the pool evaporates completely. Killi-Data documents an incubation period of 6–8 months in peat, after which the eggs hatch when re-wetted. In nature this means the eggs rest through the entire dry season, buried in what has become dry mud or desiccated peat, and hatch with the return of the first rains.

The pace of early development is fast. Killi-Data records that juvenile fish show sexually dimorphic characteristics as early as 4 weeks of age, and fish are capable of spawning by 6 weeks. The full lifespan of an individual in the aquarium rarely exceeds 10 months, and wild individuals in a pool that dries early would live substantially less. This compressed timeline — hatching, growing, breeding, and dying within a single wet season — is the defining biological reality of annual killifishes.

In the aquarium, the standard annual killifish protocol applies. A spawning medium of peat or coconut coir is placed on the tank floor and allowed to accumulate eggs over a breeding period of several weeks. The peat is then carefully collected, lightly squeezed to remove excess water, sealed in a plastic bag with just enough moisture to prevent complete desiccation, and stored at room temperature for the duration of the diapause period (typically 4–8 months for Moema, testing with a small water addition at intervals to check for hatching readiness). When the bag is re-wetted, hatchlings emerge over a period of hours to days and should be moved immediately to a rearing container with appropriately sized live foods.

In the aquarium

Moema quiii is one of the most spectacular annual killifishes in the hobby by virtue of its sheer size, the intensity of male colouration in full breeding condition, and the active, conspicuous behaviour that distinguishes it from the smaller, more cryptic annual killies of West Africa. It is not, however, a beginner's fish. The combination of large size, strong predatory instincts, pronounced male aggression, and the specialist care required by annual killifishes places it squarely in the domain of experienced killi keepers.

A species tank is the appropriate setting — individual males require space to establish visual territories, and any fish small enough to be swallowed will be consumed. Water chemistry should reflect the type locality: soft, acidic water derived from rainwater or RO water with peat or leaf-litter conditioning, pH in the acidic range, low mineral content, and temperatures around 75–79 °F. The tank should be kept covered at all times given the species' jumping ability and reported capacity for brief overland movement.

Because the adult lifespan is brief, the keeper's focus is on maintaining a productive spawning programme that carries the line forward through the diapause cycle. The 6–8 month peat storage period must be respected; attempting to hatch eggs early by re-wetting too soon typically yields poor hatch rates. The Killi-Data documentation by Huber provides the most detailed published protocol for maintaining this species, and killifish society networks — the American Killifish Association and European equivalents — are the best sources of locally adapted breeding advice and egg or fry exchanges.

Conservation

Moema quiii has never been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This absence of an assessment does not imply ecological security — it reflects the reality that many specialist Neotropical killifishes, particularly large annual species with narrow or incompletely documented ranges, have not yet been evaluated under the Red List criteria.

The species is known from two localities in the Tambopata region of southeastern Peru, both within the Madre de Dios drainage. The Tambopata watershed, while partially protected (the Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park lie within the broader region), faces ongoing pressure from illegal gold mining — particularly alluvial dredging operations in and along the Río Madre de Dios and its tributaries, which cause severe sediment loading and mercury contamination of forest waterways. Deforestation for agricultural expansion and road construction affects the forest cover that provides the deep shade habitat specifically documented for Moema quiii. Seasonal pools in open secondary forest warm more rapidly, lose their characteristic chemistry, and dry earlier — conditions that are hostile to a large annual killifish that depends on specific hydroperiod length for egg diapause completion.

Given the extremely restricted known range (two locations within a single drainage), the specialist habitat requirements (shaded forest pools with muddy substrates), and the threats active in the region, a precautionary approach would suggest that Moema quiii warrants conservation attention. Collection for the hobby trade, while not documented as a major pressure, adds a further consideration for a species with so few known populations. Formal IUCN evaluation of this and the broader Moema genus would be a valuable contribution to understanding the conservation status of Peru's annual killifish fauna.
