Taxonomy & naming
Moema heterostigma was described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 2003 in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 14, issue 4, page 291, figs. 1–2), based on material collected at the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural SECC-Pantanal near Porto Cercado, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The authority is not parenthesised, indicating the species has remained in Moema since its original description.
The genus Moema was erected by Costa in 1989 to accommodate a group of large Neotropical annual rivulids. It belongs to the family Rivulidae, the South American annual and semi-annual killifishes. Most Moema species are found in upper tributaries of the Amazon basin; M. heterostigma is the notable exception, occupying the Rio Paraguay drainage — a geographically distinct basin with a separate connection to the Pantanal wetland system rather than to the Amazonian lowlands. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Moema heterostigma Costa, 2003.
The specific epithet heterostigma is derived from the Greek hetero (different, varied) and stigma (spot, mark), a reference to the distinctive and variable spotting pattern on the flanks that distinguishes this species from its congeners. The American Killifish Association classifies it in Class 3: South American Annuals.
Morphology
Moema heterostigma is among the largest annual killifishes in the hobby. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3 in (males/unsexed), while It Rains Fishes gives a maximum total length of 4 in — the discrepancy likely reflects measuring convention and the size range encountered across conditions. The genus Moema as a whole is characterised by very large size (4.5–7 in has been reported in the genus under optimal conditions), and M. heterostigma fits this pattern: it is a substantially built fish relative to most other South American annuals. Published meristics include a dorsal fin ray count around 11.5, an anal fin count of approximately 19.0, a dorsal-to-anal ratio of 10.5, and an average lateral line scale count of 38.5; body depth is approximately 23.1% of standard length.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Males display vivid colouration — a base tone of greenish, bluish, or turquoise overlaid with the varied spotting pattern that gives the species its name. Females are generally more cryptically coloured, with a rounder body profile when gravid. The patterning allows experienced observers to distinguish the species in the field, and the variability in spot arrangement between individuals is the characteristic the species epithet commemorates.
Habitat
Moema heterostigma is native to the Rio Paraguay basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Its type locality is the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural SECC-Pantanal at Porto Cercado, where it inhabits stagnant bodies of water on the floodplain alongside the Rio Cuiabá. The American Killifish Association lists collection points from Porto Cercado to Pocone, approximately 2 mi north — indicating a relatively restricted, documented range within the broader seasonal Pantanal landscape.
The habitat is classic annual-killi country: shallow, warm, seasonal pools and floodplain depressions that fill with the wet-season rains and dry out completely during the dry season. The substrate is soft — mud, peat, and organic detritus — into which the fish spawn and in which the diapausing eggs overwinter through the dry months. Water temperatures in the Pantanal region are warm year-round and the pools are characteristically stained by decomposing vegetation, likely producing soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
The species' restriction to the Rio Paraguay basin, rather than the main Amazon system that most Moema inhabit, makes it biogeographically interesting and contributes to its relatively narrow known range. Field records remain sparse, and systematic surveys of its full distribution in the Pantanal margins have not been published.
Feeding
Like all Moema, M. heterostigma is a predatory fish in the wild, taking invertebrates from the water column and substrate in the shallow seasonal pools it inhabits. The species has a large gape relative to many smaller killifishes, consistent with its size and the genus's predatory habits.
In captivity, keeper accounts emphasise that Moema heterostigma is highly demanding in its dietary requirements: It Rains Fishes reports that the species requires live food exclusively and will die if fed only dry food. High-quality live or frozen foods — bloodworms, brine shrimp, Daphnia, tubifex, and similar invertebrate prey — are essential. This is not unusual for the larger South American annuals, which in nature encounter a concentrated pulse of invertebrate prey when seasonal pools fill; the refusal of dry food is a well-documented trait across the genus that keepers must plan for before acquiring the species.
Mating
Moema heterostigma is a substrate-spawning annual killifish. Courtship and mating take place between a male and one or more females, with the male displaying his full colouration to drive competing males away and attract receptive females. When a female accepts the male's displays, the pair move to the substrate together.
The spawning act is characteristic of annual South American rivulids: the pair dive into and press against the soft substrate — peat, mud, or fine detritus — and release eggs and sperm simultaneously into the material. The eggs are buried in the substrate with each spawning dive. This behaviour is repeated multiple times per session. Males of Moema are aggressive, and in confined conditions can harass females to exhaustion; a ratio of one male to two or more females is recommended in captivity. It Rains Fishes describes the species as very productive in well-managed setups.
Breeding
The annual life cycle of Moema heterostigma is driven by seasonal drought. In the wild, spawning occurs during the wet season in shallow floodplain pools; as the dry season advances, the water evaporates and the adult fish die. The eggs remain buried in the substrate in a state of diapause — arrested embryonic development — through the dry months, protected by the moist substrate from desiccation. When the rains return and the pool refills, the eggs hatch and the next generation completes its rapid growth cycle before the pools dry again.
In captivity, keepers replicate this cycle using a peat or coconut coir spawning medium. After a period of spawning, the peat is removed, gently squeezed to remove excess water, and stored in a sealed plastic bag at approximately 77–79 °F. It Rains Fishes gives an incubation period of five to six months, with some eggs viable for up to ten months in long-term storage, and notes that the genus benefits from storage temperatures of 79–82 °F. At the end of the incubation period, the peat is re-wetted — traditionally with aged tap water or a weak peat infusion — triggering hatching. Fry are large enough relative to many other killifish to accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as a first food. Lifespan in captivity reaches up to 1.5 years under good conditions, which is unusually long for an annual species. The species is kept and bred in species tanks of 10–15 US gal or larger, with a single male alongside two or more females.
In the aquarium
Moema heterostigma is a fish for experienced killifish keepers rather than general community aquarists. Its size, predatory nature, and obligate reliance on live food set it apart from the smaller and more widely kept South American annuals. A single male with two or more females can be comfortably housed in a 10–15 US gal species tank; given the species' dimensions, larger setups are better. The aquarium should have a soft, deep substrate — peat or fine sand — for spawning dives, a secure lid (killifish are adept jumpers), and minimal tank companions: any fish small enough to be eaten will be eaten.
Water conditions should reflect the soft, warm seasonal pools of the Pantanal margins. Warm temperatures in the 75–82 °F range, slightly soft to neutral water, and a peat-filtered or lightly tannin-stained setup are appropriate. Good water quality is important despite the species' origin in ephemeral pools; the pools in the wild are renewed each wet season, and stagnant, waste-laden captive conditions are not equivalent to the fresh inflow that accompanies seasonal refilling.
Because the species requires live food exclusively, keepers must maintain cultures of appropriate live foods — brine shrimp, white worms, bloodworms, Daphnia — before acquiring it. The reward is a large, visually striking annual killi with a fascinating life cycle and a direct connection to the extraordinary Pantanal ecosystem. It is currently rare in the hobby relative to many other South American annuals, and keepers who breed it make a genuine contribution to keeping the captive population genetically diverse.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Moema heterostigma as Least Concern in 2018, the assessment carried out by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The LC listing reflects that no immediate population collapse has been documented, but the species' known range is narrow — Porto Cercado and the immediately surrounding Pantanal floodplain in Mato Grosso — and it depends entirely on the seasonal flooding regime of that landscape.
The Pantanal is the world's largest tropical wetland and faces significant and growing pressure from agricultural conversion, soy and cattle ranching in the surrounding uplands, and hydrological alteration of the rivers that feed its seasonal floods. Drainage and modification of the seasonal pools that annual killifish depend on can eliminate populations rapidly, since the entire wild population exists only as buried eggs during the dry season — a single dry-season disturbance of the substrate (ploughing, drainage, trampling) at the wrong moment can eliminate a local population entirely before any adult survives to spawn again. Climate variability that shortens or eliminates the wet season is an additional threat to obligate annuals.
M. heterostigma's restriction to a small part of the Rio Paraguay basin in Brazil, combined with its absence from the main Amazon system, means that any significant degradation of its Pantanal habitat would have no refuge elsewhere. Conservation of the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural SECC-Pantanal and analogous private reserves in the region is likely the most direct protection this species currently receives. Captive-bred populations in the killifish hobby, while small, provide an insurance pool; keeper networks such as the American Killifish Association document and distribute the species, and records of precise collection localities (Porto Cercado to Pocone) help direct any future survey work.
