One of the few Hypostomus species native to the high-altitude foothills of the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes, Hypostomus levis inhabits fast-flowing, rocky rivers of the upper Madeira system — waters carved by elevation and filtered by distance from lowland agriculture. Its Data Deficient status reflects how little is still known about a fish that lives at the edge of Amazonian ichthyological survey reach.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus levis was described by Pearson in 1924 in Indiana University Studies (volume 11, number 64, page 22), based on specimens collected at Huachi in the Río Madeira system of Bolivia. The original combination was Cochliodon levis Pearson, 1924; a further synonym, Rhinelepis levis, also appears in the historical literature. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Hypostomus levis, with both earlier combinations now treated as junior synonyms.

The species belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Hypostomus, family Loricariidae, subfamily Hypostominae — the most speciose subfamily of the family and of the order Siluriformes. With well over 130 described species, Hypostomus has been the subject of repeated revisions, and the limits of many species groups within it remain unsettled. H. levis has not been the focus of a recent molecular study, and its phylogenetic placement within the genus is not definitively resolved.

Morphology

Adults of Hypostomus levis reach approximately 7.5 in standard length (SL), placing them squarely in the mid-size range for the genus. The body follows the typical Hypostomus plan: dorsoventrally compressed anteriorly, tapering toward the caudal peduncle, and encased in longitudinal rows of overlapping keeled scutes. The head is broad and depressed, with the mouth positioned ventrally and bearing numerous fine teeth arranged in a curved arc — the scraping dentition characteristic of algae- and periphyton-grazing Hypostomus.

The epithet levis (Latin: smooth, light) presumably alludes to some aspect of the scute ornamentation or body surface relative to contemporaneous congeners described by Pearson, though Pearson's original description is terse. No aquarium photographs of confirmed wild-caught specimens from the type locality are widely circulated, and pigmentation details from live fish are data-sparse in published sources.

Habitat

The IUCN assessment places Hypostomus levis in the Madre de Dios ecoregion (Peru) and the Upper Beni ecoregion (Bolivia), within the Beni Department drainage of the Madeira basin. The species is reported from elevations of approximately 656–1312 ft — the Andean foothills zone where rivers descend from the cordillera onto the Amazon lowland plain, creating fast currents, rocky substrates, and well-oxygenated conditions.

FishBase describes the habitat as benthopelagic (bottom-associated) freshwater in a tropical environment, with a temperature range of 77–81 °F recorded at collection sites. These are characteristically clear-to-turbid whitewater streams with rocky and cobble substrates over which biofilm and periphyton accumulate — the feeding surface of choice for most Hypostomus. No pH or hardness data specific to collection localities have been published for this species.

Feeding

Like the overwhelming majority of Hypostomus, H. levis is presumed to be a grazer of periphyton (the mixed community of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine detritus that coats submerged hard surfaces) and a scraper of biofilm from rocks and woody debris. The ventrally-placed mouthparts with fine teeth in curved rows are the anatomical signature of this feeding guild across Hypostominae.

No gut-content studies specific to H. levis have been published in the available literature. By analogy with close relatives occupying similar Andean-foothill habitats, the diet likely includes epilithic algae, fine detritus, and fungal hyphae from submerged wood, with the relative proportions shifting seasonally as rivers rise and fall and alter substrate availability.

Mating

No observations of courtship behaviour in Hypostomus levis have been reported in the scientific or hobbyist literature. Within Hypostomus more broadly, breeding behaviour typically involves males defending cavities — natural hollows in root banks, crevices beneath boulders, or undercut riverbanks — and engaging in territorial display and physical competition with rival males. Sexual dimorphism, where documented in the genus, tends to involve odontode development on the head, pectoral spines, and body flanks in males, and broader body depth in gravid females.

Whether H. levis exhibits the cavity-guarding pattern common to other Hypostomus is unknown; the species has not been bred in captivity to a degree that would generate hobbyist records, and field observations from its high-altitude range are absent from the published record.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Hypostomus levis are documented in the scientific literature or in the major hobbyist databases. Given that the species inhabits high-elevation Andean-foothill rivers and appears infrequently in the ornamental trade, breeding data are effectively absent.

Within Hypostomus, the general reproductive strategy — where studied — is cave-spawning with paternal or biparental guarding of adhesive egg clutches. Applying this general pattern to H. levis is reasonable but speculative; specific details of clutch size, incubation period, fry development, or parental behaviour cannot be stated on current evidence.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus levis does not appear to be an established aquarium species and is not regularly imported. Its high-altitude Andean-foothill origin suggests a preference for cooler, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated conditions — water that is more challenging to replicate than the warmer lowland conditions typical of many Hypostomus species in the trade.

For any keeper acquiring this species, the general framework for mid-sized Hypostomus applies: a large aquarium with strong filtration and surface agitation, rocky substrate and boulder arrangements replicating the cobble-bed habitat, water at 77–81 °F, and a grazing diet based on algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and biofilm-colonised rocks. pH and hardness data are lacking from published sources, so care parameters would need to follow the general foothill-river guideline of moderate, slightly acidic to neutral water. This remains a data-sparse species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus levis as Data Deficient (DD) in an assessment dated 25 April 2014, published in 2016. The assessors (Chuctaya J., Sarmiento J., and Maldonado M.) noted that the species is known from Bolivia (Beni Department) and Peru (Madre de Dios region) at elevations of 656–1312 ft, inhabiting fast-flowing rivers with rocky substrates.

The DD rating reflects the absence of adequate population data rather than confirmed threat. The assessors identified artisanal gold mining and agricultural effluents as plausible threats within the range — pressures that are well-documented in the upper Madeira drainage. No conservation actions specific to this species are in place. Taxonomic and distributional survey work in the Bolivian and Peruvian Andean foothills would be required to move the assessment beyond Data Deficient.
