Nothobranchius ditte was described by Stefano Valdesalici and Alexey Kardashev in 2016, adding to a genus that has expanded rapidly in the twenty-first century as collectors and ichthyologists survey the seasonal pans and drainage ditches of eastern and southern Africa. The genus Nothobranchius belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes (killifishes), and its members are the most intensively studied annual fishes in terms of ageing research, owing to their extraordinarily compressed life cycles and naturally short lifespans.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Nothobranchius ditte Valdesalici & Kardashev, 2016. The species epithet honours an individual named Ditte, following the Nothobranchius tradition of dedicating newly described species to collectors, researchers, or their family members. The authority is not parenthesised, as the species has not been moved from the genus under which it was originally described.
Morphology
Nothobranchius ditte conforms to the general body plan of the genus: a laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied fish with a blunt head, upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding and air contact, and a rounded caudal fin. Males are typically more brightly coloured than females, as is standard across Nothobranchius, with iridescent scale patterning in blues, reds, or oranges depending on the population, combined with pigmented fin margins. The precise colour pattern details specific to N. ditte are not yet widely documented in the hobbyist or scientific literature given the species' recent description.
Females are drabber — olive-brown to pale tan — with less-developed fins, a pattern of cryptic coloration that helps them avoid predation in the exposed shallow water where spawning dives take place. Sexual dimorphism in size is modest, as is typical for the genus. Maximum size is small, consistent with the genus-wide tendency for annual killies to remain compact given their compressed life histories; precise length data for this species have not been widely published.
Habitat
Like all Nothobranchius, N. ditte is restricted to temporary seasonal pools, roadside depressions, and shallow seasonal pans in East Africa — habitats that fill during the wet season and dry out completely in the dry months. The type locality is in Tanzania. These pools are typically shallow, warm, and often turbid or tannin-stained, with soft substrate of clay, peat, and organic detritus that the fish use as a spawning medium. Water chemistry in such pools is characteristically soft and slightly acidic during the wet season when rainfall dilutes accumulated salts, though drying pools can concentrate dissolved minerals before finally disappearing.
The surrounding landscape is East African savanna or grassland, subject to strong seasonal rainfall patterns driven by the inter-tropical convergence zone. The fish's distribution is closely tied to the drainage catchments and seasonal wetland systems within its range; because Nothobranchius populations are often isolated between drainage basins by unsuitable dry-land habitat, individual species and populations frequently display strong locality fidelity and limited gene flow between adjacent drainages.
Feeding
Nothobranchius ditte feeds as a generalist micro-predator and zooplanktivore, consistent with the feeding ecology documented across the genus. In the ephemeral pools it inhabits, the available prey changes rapidly as the water body fills, matures, and contracts: early in the season newly hatched fry take microorganisms and protists; as adults they target small invertebrates, zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae, and any terrestrial arthropods that fall onto the water surface. The upturned mouth is well suited to surface and mid-water feeding in shallow, still water.
In the aquarium, N. ditte accepts a range of small live and frozen invertebrates readily — Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Cyclops, small chironomid larvae (bloodworm), and similar items. Varied live and frozen food is recommended to maintain breeding condition and the intensity of male colouration. Prepared dry foods may be accepted but are best used as a supplement rather than a staple for this genus.
Mating
Nothobranchius ditte is an annual peat-spawner. Males are highly territorial and display vigorously to one another and to females, flaring fins and intensifying colouration to establish dominance hierarchies and attract mates. Courtship is direct and rapid: a male manoeuvres alongside a receptive female and the pair dive together into the soft substrate — mud, peat, or detritus — where a brief spawning embrace fertilises and deposits a single egg deeply buried in the sediment. The pair surfaces and the sequence repeats; conditioned pairs will spawn multiple times per day over an extended season.
Because wild populations complete their reproduction within a single rainy season of weeks to months, selective pressure favours fast maturation, frequent spawning, and large relative egg investment. Males compete intensely for access to females, and aggression between males kept together is common in captivity. A single male is generally paired with one or two females to reduce male–male conflict and spread the physical burden of frequent chasing across the females.
Breeding
The eggs of N. ditte are buried in the substrate and undergo diapause — a genetically programmed developmental arrest — that allows them to survive the complete desiccation of their home pool through the dry season, sometimes for many months. Embryos pass through several discrete diapause stages (DI, DII, DIII) before completing development and hatching in response to environmental cues such as re-wetting. This diapause system is one of the most studied adaptations in vertebrate biology, and Nothobranchius species are model organisms in ageing and developmental biology research.
In the hobby, breeding follows a well-established protocol: a pair is placed over a layer of peat or coconut coir substrate several centimetres deep; spawning is allowed to continue for two to four weeks, after which the adults are removed and the substrate is gently squeezed dry, placed in a sealed bag or container at moderate temperature, and stored for a diapause period typically ranging from six weeks to several months depending on species and collection locale. The substrate is then re-wetted with aged, slightly acidic water to trigger hatching. Fry are small at hatching but grow quickly on baby brine shrimp nauplii and microworms; N. ditte reaches sexual maturity rapidly, within weeks of hatching, consistent with the genus's race-against-time life history.
In the aquarium
Nothobranchius ditte is a specialist fish suited to killifish hobbyists familiar with annual peat-spawning killies rather than a general community aquarium species. A small, dedicated tank of 10–15 US gal is appropriate; the species does not require large volumes and is easier to breed and manage in compact, dedicated setups. Water should be soft and slightly acidic, kept warm (72–79 °F is a reasonable working range for East African Nothobranchius), and the tank should have a tight-fitting lid, as these fish can jump.
A layer of peat or coir substrate several centimetres deep is essential for spawning. Males are colourful and active; the species benefits from some plant cover or floating plants to break line-of-sight and reduce male–female harassment. Because the species is annual and short-lived, keepers should plan the diapause and hatching cycle in advance to maintain continuity of the strain. Annual killis are not long-term display fish in the conventional sense — they are seasonal, like the pools they evolved in — and this rhythm of spawning, drying, storage, and hatching is central to keeping them successfully.
As a relatively recently described species, N. ditte is not yet widely distributed in the hobby, and availability is limited to specialist killifish clubs and networks. Hobbyists interested in acquiring the species are advised to contact organisations such as the American Killifish Association or European killifish groups, where strain-coded eggs or adults are occasionally exchanged among members.
Conservation
Nothobranchius ditte has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, reflecting the recency of its formal description in 2016 and the difficulty of evaluating population status for newly named taxa with limited distributional data. Many Nothobranchius species described in the past two decades share this Not Evaluated status simply because the assessment process requires time and resources that have not yet been directed to them.
The broader conservation picture for Nothobranchius as a genus is one of serious concern. These fishes are single-locality or few-locality endemics tied to specific seasonal wetland systems in East and southern Africa — habitats under sustained pressure from agricultural conversion, drainage, irrigation abstraction, and the spread of introduced species. Loss of the fragile temporary pool habitat on which any annual killifish depends is equivalent to local extinction of the population, since the fish cannot move overland to alternative pools. Nothobranchius ditte, like other recently described species from Tanzania, may have a restricted range that makes it inherently vulnerable. Hobbyist collections and ex-situ preservation of strains through killifish societies represent a genuine conservation contribution for species at risk, particularly where wild habitats are contracting.
