Nothobranchius albimarginatus was formally described in 2019 by Stefano Valdesalici and Giuseppe Amato. The name places it in Nothobranchius, the largest genus of African annual killifishes, a group of roughly 80 to 90 species distributed across the savanna and coastal lowlands of East and southern Africa. The genus was erected by Peters in 1868 and is placed within the family Nothobranchiidae, the African aplocheiloid killifishes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Nothobranchius albimarginatus Valdesalici & Amato, 2019.
As a 2019 description, the species has had limited time to accumulate synonyms, hobbyist records, or secondary literature. It is a data-sparse taxon whose distribution, biology, and relationship to other Nothobranchius species are not yet fully resolved. Its placement within the genus is based on the characteristic combination of annual life history, substrate-spawning reproductive strategy, and morphological characters shared across Nothobranchius.
Morphology
Detailed published morphometric data for Nothobranchius albimarginatus are sparse given the recency of its description. The genus as a whole comprises small, laterally compressed fishes with males displaying brilliant, often iridescent coloration — reds, blues, greens, and yellows arranged in scale-edge patterns — while females are cryptic, brownish, and unadorned. Temperatures in shallow exposed pools can be high during the day. Feeding
Nothobranchius species are generalised carnivores, feeding opportunistically on whatever invertebrates are available in their temporary pools — small aquatic insects and their larvae, crustaceans, worms, and other small invertebrates. Mating
Nothobranchius albimarginatus is an annual killifish with substrate-spawning reproduction. Males are intensely competitive and display vigorously to females, using their brilliant coloration and erect fins to establish dominance hierarchies among rival males. Courtship is rapid and energetic — males pursue females persistently, and in a confined space a single male can stress females. The typical Nothobranchius breeding unit in captivity is a single male kept with one or two females.
Courtship culminates when the pair descend together into soft substrate material. The male positions alongside or slightly above the female and, in a brief embrace, both fish dive head-first into the peat or mud as a single spawning act releases one egg that is pressed into the substrate. This dive-and-press sequence is repeated many times, producing eggs scattered through the substrate layer rather than deposited in a single clutch.
Breeding
Breeding Nothobranchius albimarginatus follows the standard annual-killi peat-spawning protocol, which mirrors the species' natural life cycle. In the wild, eggs pass through obligate diapause — a period of arrested development that corresponds to the dry season, during which the substrate dries out completely and eggs remain viable for months. Diapause is typically divided into two or three phases (DI, DII, DIII in the research literature), with development resuming when the eggs are re-wetted.
In captivity, a spawning mop or layer of moist peat moss or coconut coir is provided in the tank floor. After a spawning period of four to six weeks, the medium is removed, lightly squeezed to reduce excess moisture, sealed in a plastic bag with a label noting the date, and stored at room temperature for a diapause period of eight to twelve weeks or longer. To hatch, the stored medium is re-wetted with aged soft water; fry begin hatching within hours to days. The fry are large enough at hatching to take Artemia nauplii immediately, and they grow rapidly — reaching sexual maturity in as little as six to eight weeks under good conditions. Because adults are short-lived and will consume unguarded eggs if the substrate is not removed, regular removal of the spawning medium is essential.

Nothobranchius albimarginatus is a species for the specialist annual-killifish keeper. It is not commonly available in the trade given its recent description, and specimens are more likely to be encountered through killifish society networks and hobbyist exchanges than through commercial channels. Tank requirements are modest in scale — a small, covered aquarium of 5.5–10 US gal is sufficient for a breeding trio — but attention to water quality and breeding protocol is essential.
Water should be soft to moderately soft and slightly acidic to neutral, kept warm at 73–79 °F. Because these fish are short-lived — often surviving less than a year even under optimal captive conditions — prompt establishment of a breeding colony and careful egg storage is the priority. The tank should be well-covered to prevent jumping. A substrate of moist peat or coir, or a peat mop, provides the spawning medium. Males can be aggressive toward each other and toward females; a single male with one or two females is the recommended ratio, or a species tank with sufficient females to distribute male attention.
The appeal of N. albimarginatus, as with all annual killies, lies in the remarkable biology as much as the coloration — the compressed life cycle, the diapausing eggs, the race against the drying pool — and in the ongoing work of hobbyists who maintain these species against the real possibility of wild population loss.

Across the genus Nothobranchius, the conservation picture is serious. Many species are single-locality or single-basin endemics whose entire global population occupies a handful of temporary pools. These pools are vulnerable to drainage for agriculture, modification of seasonal hydrology by irrigation schemes and boreholes, and invasion by introduced species such as mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), which can outcompete and eliminate native killi populations. Loss of even a single pool can mean extinction for an endemic species.
For N. albimarginatus specifically, detailed population and threat data have not been published in accessible literature, though its Endangered rating is consistent with the pattern seen across Nothobranchius: many congeners are narrow-range endemics confined to a handful of temporary pools, a combination that leaves little margin against habitat disturbance.
