Nothobranchius attenboroughi was formally described by Nagy, Watters & Bellstedt in 2020. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) recognises it as a valid species within the genus Nothobranchius, family Nothobranchiidae — a diverse African radiation of annual and non-annual egg-laying toothcarps. The species was previously documented under the provisional name Nothobranchius sp. 'Grumeti' before the formal description resolved its status. FishBase records an earlier nominal combination as Aphyosemion musafirii van der Zee & Sonnenberg, 2011, but the valid name accepted by Catalog of Fishes is Nothobranchius attenboroughi Nagy, Watters & Bellstedt, 2020.
The species epithet attenboroughi honours Sir David Attenborough (born 1926), whose decades of natural history broadcasting and conservation advocacy have brought global attention to the biodiversity crisis affecting species precisely like this one. The genus name Nothobranchius is a compound of the Greek nothos (spurious or bastard) and branchia (gills), referring to the reduced or modified gill structure that is a feature of the family. The American Killifish Association lists the species under its current valid combination and confirms its classification as an African annual killifish.
Morphology
Nothobranchius attenboroughi is a compact killifish reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length, placing it in the small-to-mid range for the genus. Like all Nothobranchius, males are considerably more colourful than females: the male body is typically adorned with the red, blue, and iridescent scaling patterns characteristic of the genus, with coloured scale edges and fin markings that vary in intensity with social context and condition. The caudal fin usually carries banding or marginal colour. Females are cryptically coloured — grey-brown to olivaceous — a camouflage adaptation that confers a survival advantage in the exposed, shallow pools where the fish spawns.
The body form is stocky and moderately compressed, with a slightly upturned mouth positioned for surface feeding. The eyes are proportionally large, as is typical in small annual killies that navigate murky, often turbid seasonal pools. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and immediately apparent: males in prime condition are among the most brilliantly coloured freshwater fish in East Africa, a result of the intense sexual selection that operates in short-lived species where breeding opportunity may be compressed into a few weeks.
Habitat
Nothobranchius attenboroughi is endemic to northern Tanzania, where it inhabits ephemeral pools and marshes associated with the Grumeti River and other small drainage systems that feed into Lake Victoria. These waterbodies are strictly seasonal: they fill during the long rains, support a brief but intense pulse of aquatic life through the wet season, and then contract and evaporate entirely as the dry season advances, leaving baked mud until the rains return. The species is found nowhere else in the world.

Feeding
Nothobranchius attenboroughi feeds opportunistically in the upper water column and at the surface, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — the prey that blooms in temporary pools shortly after refilling. The short growing season in annual killies generates intense selection pressure for fast growth and rapid attainment of sexual maturity, and feeding rates reflect this: wild fish eat aggressively and convert energy rapidly into reproductive tissue.
In captivity the species accepts live and frozen foods readily. Brine shrimp nauplii, Daphnia, bloodworm (frozen or live), and micro-worm are all appropriate. Varied feeding with high-protein live or frozen items is recommended to maintain condition and maximise egg production during the breeding window. Dry foods are accepted by many individuals but should not form the dietary staple for a species that evolved to exploit protein-rich live invertebrate prey.
Mating
Courtship in Nothobranchius attenboroughi follows the pattern common to annual Nothobranchius: males display intensely to females, spreading coloured fins and driving rivals away from favoured substrate patches. The male approaches the female from the side or below, orienting his flank to maximise the display of his colouration, and if the female is receptive the pair align side by side and dive together into the soft substrate to spawn.
The spawning act is brief: the male and female press together into the mud or peat and release eggs and sperm simultaneously before separating and returning to the water column. Males are polygamous and will mate with multiple females over the course of a day; females spawn repeatedly throughout the wet season, depositing eggs singly or in small batches on each dive. The timing of spawning is closely tied to the water level cycle — fish begin spawning almost immediately after pools refill, maximising the number of eggs buried before the next dry season arrives.
Breeding
Nothobranchius attenboroughi is a substrate-spawning annual killifish whose eggs require a period of diapause to develop normally. After the spawning dive, individual eggs are buried a few millimetres into the mud or peat. When the pool dries out — which may happen within weeks to a few months — the eggs are left suspended in the substrate in a state of arrested embryonic development, resilient to desiccation, heat fluctuation, and microbial attack. They remain viable through the dry season, sometimes for six months or more, and hatch rapidly when the pool refills with the next rains.
In the aquarium, the standard method for annual Nothobranchius replicates this cycle: a breeding pair is placed over a peat or coir spawning medium deep enough for them to dive into. After several weeks of spawning, the medium is removed, gently squeezed to remove excess water, placed in a sealed bag or container, and stored at room temperature for three to five months — the diapause period recommended for this species based on field and hobbyist data. At the end of the dry storage period, the peat is re-wetted with aged, slightly soft water; eggs hatch within one to several days. Newly hatched fry are proportionally large for killifish and can take baby brine shrimp from day one. Growth to sexual maturity is rapid — young fish can begin spawning within six to eight weeks of hatching, consistent with the abbreviated life cycle of an annual that must complete its reproductive programme before the pool dries again.
In the aquarium
Nothobranchius attenboroughi is a rewarding annual killifish for experienced hobbyists who understand the diapause cycle. The species is not a community fish in the conventional sense: males are territorial and will spar with one another, and the tank should be set up as a dedicated breeding pair or trio (one male, two females) to distribute male aggression. A small tank of 10–15 US gal with a tight-fitting lid, dark substrate, gentle filtration, and floating plants or surface cover is appropriate.
Water conditions should reflect the natural habitat: soft, slightly acidic water at around 72–75 °F with pH near 6.7 is a reasonable target, though the species tolerates moderate variation. A layer of peat or fine coconut coir at least 2–3 in deep provides the spawning medium — the pair must be able to submerge fully into it. Regular water changes (twice weekly) and a varied diet of live and frozen foods maintain condition and drive continuous egg deposition. The fish are short-lived — wild adults rarely survive beyond one wet season, and captive fish seldom exceed twelve to eighteen months — so maintaining a rolling stock of eggs in diapause ensures continuity of the line.

Conservation
Nothobranchius attenboroughi is assessed as Vulnerable (VU B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)) on the IUCN Red List, assessed by Nagy & Watters in 2021. The B-criterion reflects a restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy combined with observed, inferred, or projected decline in the quality of habitat — in this case, the continuing degradation and loss of seasonal wetlands and ephemeral pools in northern Tanzania. The Grumeti basin, though partly protected within the Serengeti ecosystem and adjacent game reserves, is subject to land conversion, altered hydrology from irrigation abstraction, and infrastructure development at its margins.
The broader conservation picture for the genus is stark. A comprehensive 2022 review by Nagy & Watters, published in Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, assessed the status of 94 Nothobranchius species and found that 72 percent are threatened with extinction — one of the highest proportions of any vertebrate genus reviewed under Red List criteria. The primary driver is habitat loss: African seasonal wetlands are among the most rapidly disappearing freshwater habitats on the continent, drained for agriculture, altered by livestock access, and degraded by invasive plants and mosquitofish introductions that eliminate native annual fish before the pool even dries. For a single-locality endemic like Nothobranchius attenboroughi, a single drainage project or run of failed rains may be enough to eliminate the wild population entirely. Captive maintenance of viable breeding populations by the killifish hobby thus carries genuine conservation weight for species at this level of risk.
