Nothobranchius fuscotaeniatus is a Critically Endangered annual killifish known from a single seasonal pool in the coastal lowlands of Tanzania, roughly 1 mi south of the Ndundu ferry crossing near the lower Rufiji River drainage. Males are striking: an intense blue-green body crossed by bold dark red-brown bars that extend into the dorsal and anal fins, edged with a prominent black marginal band — yet without a trace of red on body or fins, a combination unique among its syntopic congeners. The species was formally described in 1997 by Lothar Seegers from material he collected himself (field code TZ 97-57), and its entire wild existence unfolds within the compressed arc of a single short rainy season — a life measured in weeks rather than years.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius fuscotaeniatus was described by Lothar Seegers in 1997, based on material he collected at the type locality on 22 July 1997 (field code TZ 97-57). The holotype — a 1.5 in SL male, catalogue number ZMB 32.781 held at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin — was collected from a seasonal pool in Tanzania's coastal region, approximately 1 mi south of the Ndundu ferry along the road between Nyamwage and Kibiti, within the lower Rufiji River drainage at roughly 66 ft elevation. Paratypes are registered as ZMB 32782 (3 specimens) and ZMB 32783 (6 specimens).

The species belongs to the large African annual killifish genus Nothobranchius, which is placed in the family Nothobranchiidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the authority as Seegers, 1997, published in his monograph Killifishes of the World: Old World Killis II. Note that the header authority '(Boulenger, 1901)' reflects a historical attribution sometimes applied to this group; the current accepted authorship per the literature is Seegers, 1997. The species is diagnosed by a combination of male characters: an intense blue-green ground colour lacking any red on the body or fins, distinct red-brown crossbars on the trunk that extend into the dorsal and anal fins, and a broad black distal margin on the caudal fin with alternating curved bands of dark red-brown and light green-yellow. The chromosome count of 2n=38, NF=40 has been recorded from this species.

At the type locality, N. fuscotaeniatus is syntopic with N. janpapi, N. lourensi, and N. melanospilus — a co-occurrence that has been important in diagnosing this species by the complete absence of red pigmentation that marks several of its congeners.

Morphology

Males reach approximately 1.5 in standard length (the holotype) with FishBase giving a maximum of 1.5 in SL; females are slightly smaller at around 1 in SL. The body plan is that of a typical Nothobranchius: stocky and laterally compressed, with the large eyes, upturned mouth, and deep caudal peduncle characteristic of the genus.

The male's coloration is diagnostic and vivid. The flanks carry an intense blue-green iridescence, overlaid by a series of distinct red-brown crossbars that run the length of the trunk and extend into both the dorsal and anal fins. Crucially, there is no red pigmentation anywhere on the body or fins — this absence is one of the key diagnostic features separating N. fuscotaeniatus from related species at the same locality. The dorsal and anal fins are described as trapezoidal in outline, and both carry the prominent dark crossbars with conspicuous black marginal bands. The caudal fin shows alternating curved bands of dark red-brown and light green-yellow, with a broad black distal margin.

Females are considerably plainer, as is typical for the genus: the body shows a light blue base colour with red-brown crossbars, and a faint light blue iridescence is visible on the dorsal and anal fins. The sexes are easy to distinguish even as juveniles once pigment begins to develop in males.

Habitat

This species is known only from a single seasonal pool within the lower Rufiji River coastal drainage, at an elevation of approximately 66 ft above sea level in the coastal lowland of Tanzania. The pool is shallow, temporary, and fully dependent on seasonal rainfall; it dries out completely during the dry season, leaving no surface water. The recorded water chemistry at the collection date of 31 May 1997 was: temperature 77 °F, pH 6.50, TDS 80 ppm, conductivity 160 μS — moderately soft and slightly acidic, consistent with a shallow savanna or coastal-lowland seasonal pool receiving modest groundwater input.

The surrounding landscape is coastal East African lowland, characterised by a mosaic of seasonally inundated grassland, scrub, and low woodland. The pool fills during the rainy season and provides the brief window of open water in which the adults complete their entire life cycle. Aquarists who have kept the species report that it tolerates moderately hard and alkaline tap water in captivity, suggesting some plasticity in hardness tolerance, but the wild reference point is soft and near-neutral.

N. fuscotaeniatus is assigned to Freshwater Ecoregion 564, Coastal East Africa.

Feeding

Like all Nothobranchius, N. fuscotaeniatus is a micro-predator in the wild, feeding on zooplankton, small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae, and other small organisms that colonise the seasonal pool alongside the fish. The compressed window of adult life favours fast energy acquisition, and wild fish feed opportunistically and continuously during their brief surface-water existence.

In captivity the species accepts live and frozen foods readily. Standard killifish fare — live or frozen Artemia (brine shrimp), Daphnia, Cyclops, chironomid larvae (bloodworm), and small worms — is taken eagerly. Dry foods are often accepted once the fish is settled, though live and frozen foods are preferable for conditioning breeding pairs. Feeding frequency should be high relative to body size, as these fish are metabolically fast-paced animals with short lives.

Mating

Nothobranchius fuscotaeniatus is an annual killifish with a substrate-diving spawning strategy. When the seasonal pool fills and adults emerge from the hatching cohort, males establish loose territories and display intensely to females, flaring their blue-green flanks and spreading the boldly patterned fins to signal dominance and attract mates. Display interactions between males are vigorous but rarely escalate to serious injury in a well-structured group.

Spawning is initiated by the male driving the female toward the soft mud or peat substrate at the bottom of the pool. The pair swim side by side, then dive together into the substrate, burying themselves briefly while eggs and sperm are released. Each dive deposits one or a small number of eggs deep in the anaerobic sediment. This embedding behaviour is the defining mating act of annual Nothobranchius and is shared across the genus: eggs are placed into the substrate deliberately, not scattered in open water. The male may spawn with multiple females over the course of the season, and females produce eggs intermittently throughout adult life. The description notes the species as somewhat shy and more reclusive than many Nothobranchius, tending to hide more in captivity.

Breeding

The eggs of N. fuscotaeniatus are buried in the substrate during spawning and remain there as the pool dries out. Once the surface water recedes and the mud desiccates, the eggs enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development in which metabolic activity drops to a near-standstill. The eggs are drought-resistant and can survive months in dry or semi-dry peat until the next rainy season refills the pool, triggering hatching.

In the hobby, this biology is reproduced by spawning the fish on peat moss or coir substrate (which substitutes for the natural mud). After a spawning period of several weeks, the wet peat containing the eggs is removed, lightly pressed to remove excess water, and stored in a sealed plastic bag or container at room temperature in the dark. The standard incubation period for N. fuscotaeniatus eggs is approximately 2–3 months, after which the stored peat is flooded with soft, slightly acidic water to trigger hatching. Fry are large enough to take baby brine shrimp nauplii immediately and grow quickly. Breeding difficulty is reported as easy to average, but fry are noted to grow more slowly than some other Nothobranchius. The known hobby strains include TZ 97-57 (the type-locality collection) and Kitonga North TAN 97-9.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius fuscotaeniatus is kept almost exclusively by killifish specialists. It is a small, peaceful species relative to many Nothobranchius and is described as shy, tending to hide more than related species — this should be accommodated with dense plant cover and floating vegetation that provides security and dim lighting in at least part of the tank. A small, well-planted species tank of 10–15 US gal is appropriate for one or two pairs.

Water chemistry should replicate the soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions of the type locality (pH around 6.5–7.0, low TDS) for best results, though the species has proven adaptable to moderately hard and alkaline water in captivity. Temperature of 68–79 °F suits it well; the lower end of this range slows senescence and extends captive lifespan slightly. The substrate should include a layer of soft peat or fine sand to allow natural spawning behaviour. A tight-fitting lid is essential.

Because the adults are annual and die at the end of their first season, hobbyists maintain populations through the egg-storage cycle described above. Fry from a batch grown on will be ready to spawn within 6–8 weeks of hatching, perpetuating the line. Acquiring this species requires contact with killifish society networks such as the American Killifish Association, as it is rarely available in the general trade; egg packages and live fish are exchanged among members.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius fuscotaeniatus as Critically Endangered under criterion B2ab(iii) in October 2018, with the assessment conducted by Brian Watters and Béla Nagy. The previous 2006 assessment by Hanssens and Snoeks had returned a Data Deficient verdict, reflecting limited distributional knowledge; the 2018 re-evaluation confirmed what the original description had already implied — that this species is an extreme single-locality endemic with a known extent of occurrence limited to one seasonal pool.

The critical threat to N. fuscotaeniatus is habitat loss and degradation at and around its sole known location near the Ndundu ferry crossing on the lower Rufiji. Seasonal pools in coastal Tanzania are vulnerable to drainage for agriculture and infrastructure, to disruption of the flooding regime by upstream water abstraction, to the introduction of competitor and predatory species including mosquitofish (Gambusia), and to the general pace of land-use change in Tanzania's coastal lowland zone. A single major disturbance event — channelisation of a nearby drainage, conversion of the surrounding grassland, or even an unusually severe drought year that prevents hatching — could eliminate the wild population entirely.

The species' survival in the medium term is partly underwritten by its presence in hobbyist collections, where peat-stored egg batches represent a banked population that could theoretically support reintroduction. However, maintaining genetically representative captive lines over multiple years requires dedicated coordination within the killifish community, and the practical link between hobby lines and in-situ conservation at the type locality has not been formalised. Surveys to determine whether any satellite populations exist beyond the type locality would be a high priority for future fieldwork.
