Guenther's notho is a jewel-bright annual killifish endemic to the seasonal pools and coastal marshes of Unguja Island — the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago off eastern Tanzania. Males blaze with iridescent blue and red scales; females are a modest olive-brown, conserving energy for the biological imperative these fish share: cramming an entire life cycle into the few months a temporary pool exists before the dry season erases it. One of the most eye-catching of all annual killifishes, N. guentheri is also one of the most tractable for the specialist aquarist, and its enclosed-island distribution makes its long-term fate inseparable from what happens to the freshwater wetlands of Zanzibar.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius guentheri was described by the German zoologist Georg Pfeffer in 1893, placing it in the genus Nothobranchius Peters, 1868 — the authority is presented in parentheses because Pfeffer's original combination has since been updated. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Nothobranchius guentheri (Pfeffer, 1893). The genus Nothobranchius belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae, the African annual killifishes, a clade whose defining biological feature is the production of drought-resistant, diapausing eggs buried in substrate that dries out completely between wet seasons.

The species epithet guentheri honours Albert Günther (1830–1914), the German-British ichthyologist who served for decades as Keeper of Zoology at the Natural History Museum, London, and who described or revised enormous numbers of fishes from colonial-era collections. The genus name Nothobranchius is formed from the Greek nothos (spurious, irregular) and branchia (gills), a reference to the unusual structure of the gill arches in the type species relative to other cyprinodontiforms.

Taxonomic note: Nagy (2022) assessed the conservation status of 94 Nothobranchius species and found that 72% met IUCN threatened categories — a striking figure for a single genus that underscores how range-restricted and habitat-dependent most members are. Nothobranchius guentheri, confined entirely to Unguja Island, sits near the extreme end of that endemism spectrum.

Morphology

Nothobranchius guentheri is a compact killifish reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length (WildNothos records 1.5 in SL as maximum); the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ecological risk screening gives male maximum total length as 2 in TL and female as 2.5 in TL, with females slightly larger than males in total length despite their more subdued colouration.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Males are brilliantly coloured: the body scales are iridescent blue-green to turquoise with red or orange edging, producing a mosaic that intensifies during display and in peak condition. The caudal fin is typically reddish to orange — giving rise to the common name 'redtail notho' — and the dorsal and anal fins carry blue and red patterning. Females are cryptically coloured in olive-brown to beige, with faint or absent scale patterning and clear to lightly pigmented fins — a common pattern in Nothobranchius where the female's neutrality benefits survival in exposed, seasonally shallow habitats.

The body plan is typical of Nothobranchius: laterally compressed, with a moderately rounded snout, an upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and relatively large eyes. Like all annual killifishes, the species lacks the internal ossification of longer-lived fishes and ages rapidly at the cellular level, consistent with a wild lifespan measured in months.

Habitat

Nothobranchius guentheri is endemic to Unguja Island, the principal island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, in the Indian Ocean off eastern Tanzania. Its entire natural range is confined to the coastal freshwater seasonal pools and marshes of this island — a total land area of roughly 1,410 mi², with freshwater habitat a small and fragmented fraction of that. No wild populations are known from the Tanzanian mainland or from other islands in the archipelago.

The habitat is the temporary pool of the East African coastal savanna and lowland: shallow depressions and seasonal swamps that fill during the wet season rains and contract or dry out completely during the dry months. Water conditions in these pools are typically soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral. FishBase records preferred parameters of approximately 72 °F and pH 6, with hardness around 4–7 dGH, reflecting the dilute character of rainwater-fed coastal pools. WildNothos field data for aquarium-kept animals derived from this population give somewhat warmer and more neutral figures (77–84 °F, pH 7.2–7.7), consistent with seasonal variation in shallow pools that warm substantially under the tropical sun as they shallow out.

The fish is found at or near the bottom of these pools — FishBase categorises it as benthopelagic — and both sexes spend much of their time in close contact with the soft substrate of mud, peat, and accumulated organic detritus, which serves as the spawning medium.

Feeding

Like most Nothobranchius, N. guentheri is an opportunistic carnivore in the wild, feeding on the small invertebrates, insect larvae, zooplankton, and other aquatic prey that colonise its temporary pools after rains. The upturned mouth suggests a preference for surface and mid-water prey items, consistent with the abundance of emerging insects and mosquito larvae in the seasonal pools of the East African coastal zone.

In the aquarium, the species is an undemanding feeder that accepts live and frozen foods readily. Daphnia, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), mosquito larvae, artemia (brine shrimp), and tubifex are all taken enthusiastically. Dry foods are accepted by many captive specimens, particularly if introduced alongside or after live and frozen items. Because these are short-lived fish that invest heavily in rapid growth and reproduction rather than longevity, regular, protein-rich feeding is important for keeping them in breeding condition throughout their abbreviated life.

Mating

In the wild, mating in Nothobranchius guentheri is concentrated into the wet season while pools are present and before water levels begin to fall. Males are conspicuously territorial and competitive: the chromatic brilliance of the male's colouration is both an intersexual signal — advertising quality to females — and an intrasexual signal during male-male confrontations over the soft-bottomed territories where spawning occurs.

Courting males display laterally to females, erecting fins and intensifying colouration. When a female is receptive, the pair align alongside each other over a patch of soft substrate and simultaneously dive or press into the sediment, releasing eggs and sperm in the substrate while partially buried. This side-by-side substrate-spawning act is the diagnostic mating mode of the African annual killifish and distinguishes them clearly from non-annual killies that attach adhesive eggs to plant stems or roots. The male's urogenital papilla is positioned for efficient insemination during this brief substrate embrace. Spawning occurs repeatedly — the Aquarium Co-Op hobbyist literature notes that pairs in captivity may spawn daily when mature and well-conditioned.

Breeding

The eggs of Nothobranchius guentheri are deposited and buried in soft substrate — mud, peat, or detritus — where they undergo arrested embryonic development (diapause) during the dry season when the pool has evaporated. Diapause allows the embryos to survive complete desiccation for months, hatching only when the substrate is rewetted by the next season's rains. FishBase notes an incubation period of 3–4 months at room temperature, consistent with a single dry-season dormancy period; WildNothos gives a figure of 2–3 months in peat moss at room temperature for captive material.

In the aquarium, annual killies are bred on a peat or coconut-coir spawning medium. A shallow tray or layer of damp peat is placed in the aquarium; the pair spawn into it over days to weeks. The peat is then removed, lightly squeezed to remove excess water, sealed in a plastic bag or container, and stored at room temperature for approximately 2–3 months. Re-wetting the peat triggers mass hatching — fry emerge within hours to days and are immediately free-swimming. First foods are infusoria, vinegar eels, or commercial fry powder, followed by freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Growth is rapid: young fish can reach sexual maturity in as little as 6–8 weeks under good conditions, reflecting the selective pressure of an extremely short wild breeding window.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius guentheri is widely regarded as one of the easier entry points into annual killifish keeping — it is more tolerant of aquarium conditions than many of its genus, accepts a range of foods without difficulty, and the males' colours rival any fish available to the aquarist. A pair or trio (one male, two females) can be maintained in as little as a 10 US gal tank, provided water quality is maintained and the males' aggression toward one another is respected: multiple males will fight, and the dominant male will harass a single female relentlessly unless she has companions to diffuse attention.

Water chemistry should reflect the soft, near-neutral to slightly acidic conditions of its native pools: a temperature of 72–79 °F, pH around 6.5–7.5, and low to moderate hardness suit the species well. Avoid hard alkaline water. The aquarium should have a soft substrate (fine sand or peat) if breeding is intended, and a tray or portion of peat spawning medium should be available at all times for spawning pairs. Because wild fish may live less than a year — many succumb before or at the annual dry season even in good conditions — the captive husbandry goal is to collect enough eggs early in the fish's life to maintain the lineage. Age shows quickly in annual killis: males that were brilliant at four months may begin to fade and weaken by eight or nine months.

Straim and collection codes are valued in the annual killi hobby: collectors prefer to maintain wild-sourced strains from known collection localities rather than mixed-origin aquarium fish, both for genetic integrity and because locality data informs conservation understanding. Captive-bred N. guentheri of known provenance are traded through killifish clubs internationally.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius guentheri as Endangered (EN) in 2019, reversing a prior Least Concern listing — a significant downgrade that reflects the species' uniquely precarious position as an island endemic with a contracting freshwater habitat. The entire global range of the species is Unguja Island, Zanzibar; there is no mainland or offshore-island refuge population. Any event that degrades or eliminates the seasonal pools and coastal marshes of this island threatens the species in total.

The pressures on those habitats are substantial. Zanzibar's human population has grown rapidly, and with it agricultural encroachment on wetlands, drainage of seasonal pools for cultivation, and extraction of freshwater for domestic and irrigation use. Introduced species — particularly Nile tilapia and various mosquitofish (Gambusia-like poeciliids) released for malaria control — are present in many freshwater bodies on the island and compete with or prey upon native killies. Coastal development for tourism infrastructure further reduces and fragments the marshes that N. guentheri depends on.

Nagy (2022) reported that 72% of the 94 assessed Nothobranchius species are threatened, making this one of the most at-risk freshwater fish genera globally. For N. guentheri specifically, the confined island range and the ephemeral nature of its habitat mean that even localised land-use changes can be catastrophic. Captive conservation breeding in the killifish hobby — where straim lines of known island provenance are maintained across enthusiast collections worldwide — represents the most concrete existing buffer, but it is not a substitute for the protection of Zanzibar's remaining seasonal wetlands.
