Taxonomy & naming
Nothobranchius kardashevi was formally described by Stefano Valdesalici in 2012, with the holotype a male of 1.5 in standard length (MRAC B2-09-P-1) collected on 21 May 2011 by Kiril Kardashev and I. Ivanova at a pond on the left side of the road between Kabungo and Iloba, Karira stream, Katuma River drainage, Tanzania (06°22.061'S, 30°56.161'E); field code Mpanda K 2011-25. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the species as valid within the genus Nothobranchius.
The species is assigned to the subgenus Zononothobranchius and placed in the N. ugandensis species group, a clade characterised by a reticulated or barred colour pattern in red and blue. Within the group, N. kardashevi is distinguished by its spotted caudal fin — a character absent from the other members. It is recorded syntopic with N. ivanovae at the type locality, the two species co-occurring at a rate of 100 per cent across sampled pools.
The specific epithet honours Kiril Kardashev, the aquarist and field collector who first collected the species during the 2011 Mpanda expedition; his name also appears on the field collection code Mpanda K 2011-25.
Morphology
Males reach a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in (the holotype measurement; FishBase cites 1.5 in SL as the known maximum). The body is compact and laterally compressed, consistent with the genus. The head is rounded with a slightly concave to straight dorsal profile, a feature included in the original diagnosis.
The colour pattern of males is vivid: light-blue body scales are overlaid with a broad, irregularly reticulated pattern of bright red that forms oblique bars across the flanks. The head and dorsal surface carry vivid bright red pigmentation. The dorsal and anal fins bear large, vivid red spots, and the anal fin is yellow or blue depending on the individual or population. The caudal fin is spotted — the key diagnostic character separating N. kardashevi from congeners in the N. ugandensis group. Females are, as in all Nothobranchius, cryptically coloured: smaller-bodied, pale greyish-brown without the bright male patterning, with unmarked or only faintly patterned fins.
Habitat
Nothobranchius kardashevi inhabits seasonal freshwater pools in the Katuma River drainage of western Tanzania, in the Katavi–Rukwa corridor west of Lake Tanganyika. The type-locality pools lie at an elevation of approximately 1,005–1,75 ft above sea level near Kabungo and Sibwesa marshland. These are shallow, ephemeral grass-fringed pools that form on the floodplain during the wet season and contract or disappear entirely during the dry season.
The pools are typically tea-coloured with suspended detritus, warm (reflecting lowland sub-Saharan conditions), and soft-to-moderately-hard depending on substrate and rainfall. The biotic index score of 3 recorded for the type locality (Wild Nothos) indicates moderate biological richness. The ecoregional assignment is the Lake Tanganyika basin (FEOW #542), placing the species within one of Africa's great freshwater biodiversity hotspots, though the species itself occurs in peripheral floodplain habitats rather than in the lake itself.
The species is syntopic with N. ivanovae, and co-occurrence of multiple Nothobranchius species in the same pools is characteristic of the Tanzanian annual-killi landscape, where competitive and reproductive isolation between closely related species is maintained by colour pattern differences and subtle habitat partitioning.
Feeding
Like all Nothobranchius, N. kardashevi is a small predatory opportunist. In the wild it feeds on the invertebrate fauna of its seasonal pools — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton — taking prey roughly proportional to its own small size. The pools it inhabits are often rich in invertebrate life during the wet season, providing adequate food for rapid growth before the dry season.
In captivity the species accepts a wide range of small live and frozen foods: Drosophila, bloodworm, Artemia nauplii and adults, Tubifex, and similar small invertebrate items. A varied diet with a strong live-food component maintains the best colour and condition in males. Prepared micro-pellets are accepted by many individuals once the fish is settled. Overfeeding should be avoided in the small-volume aquaria typically used for annual killies, as water quality degrades quickly.
Mating
Nothobranchius kardashevi is an annual killifish with substrate-diving spawning behaviour typical of the genus. Males are strongly territorial and vigorously display to females, erecting fins and intensifying colour to signal quality. Courtship is direct and relatively brief: after chasing and lateral display, the male positions himself alongside the female and the pair dive together into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus — where eggs are deposited individually or in small batches.
Male colouration in this species is particularly striking, with the reticulated red-and-blue pattern and vivid red head providing an honest signal of condition. As with many Nothobranchius, males in peak condition are visually dramatic; dull or pale males tend to be subordinate or in declining health. The species is polygamous, and in group settings a dominant male will spawn with multiple females while suppressing rival males through display and chasing.
Breeding
Breeding follows the annual pattern that defines the genus. The pair dive into the soft pool substrate during spawning, burying eggs singly at 0.5–1 in depth in the peat or mud. The fertilised eggs are drought-resistant and enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — enabling them to survive the complete desiccation of the pool during the dry season, buried in cracking substrate for months. When seasonal rains refill the pool the following year, the eggs hatch synchronously, and the fry must grow to sexual maturity and complete spawning before the water disappears again, typically within a few months.
In the aquarium hobby, pairs are spawned on a layer of peat moss or coconut coir. The peat is removed, gently squeezed to reduce moisture, sealed in a labelled plastic bag, and stored in a dark, warm location for the diapause period — typically three to six months for N. kardashevi (FishBase records embryonic development of three to six months at room temperature in peat moss). At the end of the storage period the peat is placed in soft, warm water and hatching occurs within hours to days. Fry are small but robust and take Artemia nauplii and micro-worms from the first day of free-swimming. Growth to maturity is rapid; adults begin spawning at six to eight weeks and may live only several months in the aquarium even under good conditions, reflecting the compressed life-history of an obligate annual.
In the aquarium
Nothobranchius kardashevi is kept by specialist annual-killi hobbyists and is considered a moderately accessible Nothobranchius for those already familiar with the care requirements of the genus. A pair or trio (one male, two females) is comfortably housed in a tank of 5.5–10 US gal; larger volumes are used for group breeding. The aquarium should be well-covered with a tight-fitting lid, as Nothobranchius are competent jumpers.
Water should be soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral, and warm — reflecting the warm, shallow pools of western Tanzania. A temperature of 72–79 °F suits the species well; temperatures above 82 °F accelerate ageing and shorten the already brief lifespan. Peat filtration or Indian almond leaf extract helps replicate the tannin-stained quality of the natural pools. The substrate should include a layer of peat or coir several centimetres deep to allow the characteristic substrate-diving behaviour and to collect the buried eggs.
Males are aggressive toward each other, and in small tanks a single dominant male will harass subordinates relentlessly. A ratio of one male to two or more females reduces pressure on individual females. The species is not appropriate for mixed community tanks; the small tank volume, soft-water chemistry, and substrate requirements suit it best to a species-only or annual-killi-collection setting. The vividly patterned males are among the more spectacular Nothobranchius in the N. ugandensis group, making the species a rewarding display fish for specialists who appreciate annual killies.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius kardashevi as Vulnerable (VU B1ab(iii)) in December 2018, with the assessment published by Nagy and Watters in 2019. The criterion B1ab(iii) indicates a restricted extent of occurrence combined with observed, estimated, or projected decline in area, extent, or quality of habitat. The species is known from only a small number of seasonal pools in a geographically limited section of the Katuma River drainage in western Tanzania, placing it among the more restricted-range annual killifish of the region.
The threats confronting N. kardashevi are those typical of African annual killies inhabiting low-elevation floodplain pools: agricultural expansion and seasonal pool drainage for cultivation, livestock grazing that degrades pool margins and increases siltation, road construction in the Kabungo–Iloba corridor affecting natural drainage patterns, and the wider backdrop of reduced and less predictable rainfall in the Katavi–Rukwa corridor linked to regional climate trends. The syntopic presence of N. ivanovae suggests the two species share the same habitat requirements and therefore the same vulnerabilities.
The aquarium hobby maintains N. kardashevi in captive populations circulated among killifish societies, and the American Killifish Association lists the species on its database. However, captive stocks of African annual killifish are subject to genetic drift and inbreeding over time, and cannot substitute for protection of the wild pools that are the species' only natural refuge. Formal protection of the seasonal wetland complex around Kabungo and Sibwesa within the broader Katavi ecosystem remains the most effective long-term conservation action for this and other co-occurring annual killifish.
