Taxonomy & naming
Nothobranchius kilomberoensis was formally described by Rudolf Wildekamp, Thomas Watters, and Ivor Sainthouse in 2002 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 13, number 1, pages 1–10). The holotype — MRAC 97-83-P-18, a male of 1.5 in standard length — was collected at the Ifakara locality (collection code TAN 95-4). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Nothobranchius kilomberoensis Wildekamp, Watters & Sainthouse, 2002.
The species belongs to subgenus Adiniops and falls within the N. guentheri species group, a cluster of East and southern African annuals sharing a broadly similar pattern of male coloration with spotted or streaked flanks, red caudals, and pale fin margins. Meristic characters used in the original diagnosis include 13–17 dorsal rays and 15–16 anal rays. The species is syntopic at some Kilombero sites with three congeners — N. lucius, N. geminus, and N. lourensi — indicating a locally species-rich Nothobranchius fauna in the drainage.
The specific epithet kilomberoensis is a toponym derived from the Kilombero River, the principal drainage of the lowland basin in which all known populations occur. A karyotype of 2n = 32 chromosomes with a fundamental number (NF) of 46 has been documented, a figure consistent with other members of the genus.
Morphology
Males reach a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in; FishBase records males at up to 1.5 in SL while WildNothos data give females up to 1.5 in SL, making the female the larger sex in standard-length terms — an unusual reversal of the typical Nothobranchius pattern where males are often the equal or slightly larger sex. The body is deep and laterally compressed, consistent with the genus, with the broad-based dorsal and anal fins characteristic of annual Nothobranchius.
Male coloration is striking. The lower head and throat carry dark-red spots, and the caudal fin is plain red — unmarked by the banding or blue margining seen in some congeners. The dorsal and anal fins bear white-blue to light-blue outer margins. Body flanks show the iridescent scaling typical of male Nothobranchius. Females are cryptically brown with spots on the head, body, and unpaired fins; the fin margins are plain rather than coloured. Sexual dimorphism is therefore pronounced, and females can be distinguished from males at a glance.
Habitat
All known populations are confined to the Kilombero River basin in eastern Tanzania, at elevations of roughly 251–347 metres above sea level. The species occurs in ephemeral, seasonal floodpools and swamp margins, including the Kibasira swamp system, where standing water is present only during and shortly after the rainy season. Habitats are grass-dense — shallow pools partially overgrown with emergent and floating vegetation — and the substrate is soft mud or silt into which the fish spawn.
Water conditions at collection sites documented by WildNothos are slightly warm and mildly turbid: temperatures of 75–79 °F, pH 7.0–7.9, and very low conductivity of 20–160 µS/cm, pointing to soft, barely mineralised water with near-neutral chemistry — consistent with seasonally flooded savanna soils rather than forested blackwater conditions. The type locality near Ifakara lies at approximately 08°10' S, 36°42' E. Three collection localities are documented in hobby records: Minepa (TAN 00-14), Ifakara (TAN 95/4), and a further Kilombero site (TAN 95/4 series).
Feeding
Like other Nothobranchius species of comparable size, N. kilomberoensis is a benthopelagic micro-predator in the wild. It forages in the shallow water column and at the surface of the organic-rich substrate of its ephemeral pool habitats, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and whatever other invertebrate prey is available in the brief window when pools are inundated.
In the aquarium the species presents no feeding difficulties. It accepts live and frozen Daphnia, Cyclops, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and Tubifex without hesitation. Small dried foods and micro-pellets formulated for carnivorous fish are also taken by established individuals. Given the short lifespan and high metabolic pace of annual killies, frequent feeding — at least once or twice daily — supports condition and maximises breeding output.
Mating
Nothobranchius kilomberoensis is a classic annual substrate-spawner, and its mating behaviour follows the pattern characteristic of the entire genus. Males are persistently and vigorously competitive with one another; dominant males establish temporary territories within the pool and display intensely to females, spreading their coloured fins and posturing laterally to show the full extent of their dorsal and anal fin margins. A single male may attempt to court multiple females within a short time.
Spawning involves a rapid diving embrace. The male aligns alongside the female, the pair press their bodies together, and both dive simultaneously into the soft mud or peat substrate. Eggs and sperm are released at depth within the substrate. This substrate dive can be repeated many times during a single spawning session. The eggs are tough and resistant to desiccation — adaptations for surviving the months-long dry period buried in the sediment while the pool above them evaporates entirely.
Breeding
The reproductive strategy of N. kilomberoensis is that of a true annual annual killifish: after spawning, the eggs remain buried in the substrate throughout the dry season in a state of embryonic diapause — arrested development — that can last several months. In the wild, pools in the Kilombero floodplain dry completely and the adult fish die; only the buried egg bank persists through the drought. When seasonal rains return and refill the pools, the eggs hatch rapidly, and the fry must grow to sexual maturity and complete their own spawning within the brief window of the next wet season.
In the aquarium, this biology is replicated by spawning the fish on a deep layer of peat moss or coconut-coir substrate. After a spawning period of several weeks, the substrate is removed, lightly squeezed to remove excess water, and stored in a sealed plastic bag at room temperature for an incubation period of approximately three to four months — the period documented in WildNothos records for this species. After storage, the peat is re-wetted with soft, slightly acidic water and the fry hatch over one to several days. Fry are robust for Nothobranchius and accept Artemia nauplii as a first food; growth is fast and fish can reach sexual maturity in six to eight weeks under warm, well-fed conditions.
In the aquarium
Nothobranchius kilomberoensis is kept by specialist killifish hobbyists worldwide, classified as a Class 4 Nothobranchius by the American Killifish Association (AKA). It is not a fish for community aquaria: males are aggressive toward one another and will harass females relentlessly in confined spaces. The recommended setup is a small, heavily planted species tank — 10–15 US gal — with a single male and two or three females, or a male-only display tank, with a peat or coir substrate layer deep enough for spawning.
Water should be soft and slightly warm, reflecting the low-conductivity (20–160 µS/cm), near-neutral to mildly alkaline conditions (pH 7.0–7.9) documented at wild collection sites; temperature of 75–79 °F is appropriate. Floating plants and surface cover reduce male aggression and give females refuge. The tank must be tightly covered — like all Nothobranchius, this species is a capable jumper. Because the fish are short-lived annuals (wild adults typically die within a single season), the hobbyist maintains the line through recurring peat-storage breeding cycles rather than expecting individuals to survive more than twelve to eighteen months.
Collection codes documented in hobby circulation include TAN 95/4 (Ifakara holotype locality) and TAN 00-14 (Minepa). Maintaining locality purity matters to serious killifishers; fish from different collection codes should not be mixed, and strain labels should be preserved in hobbyist records.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species assesses Nothobranchius kilomberoensis as Vulnerable (criterion B1ab(iii)), with the assessment carried out in 2018 and updated by Nagy and Watters in 2019 (taxon ID 61220, assessment ID 47240673). The criterion reflects a restricted extent of occurrence combined with continuing decline in the quality of the seasonal freshwater habitats on which the species depends. A previous 2006 assessment also returned a Vulnerable status, though under criterion D2, indicating the species has carried conservation concern for at least two decades.
The species is a strict endemic of the Kilombero River drainage in eastern Tanzania, and its dependence on intact seasonal floodpools and swamp margins — habitats that are inherently patchy, transient, and sensitive to hydrological change — leaves it with very little buffer against land-use change. Agricultural drainage, conversion of floodplain swamps to rice cultivation, and broader catchment degradation all reduce the quality and extent of available breeding habitat. A 2021 review by Nagy and Watters in Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems found that 72% of the 94 described Nothobranchius species are threatened with extinction, underscoring the conservation urgency for the genus as a whole. With only three known collection localities on record, N. kilomberoensis has a narrow factual footprint; any further reduction in the area or connectivity of Kibasira swamp and adjacent Kilombero floodpools could push the species toward a higher threat category.
