Kirk's notho is a small annual killifish endemic to the seasonal floodplains surrounding Lake Chilwa and Lake Chiuta in Malawi — two shallow, closed-basin lakes whose fringing marshes and roadside ditches dry down completely each year. Like all Nothobranchius, it spends its entire adult life completing a race against desiccation: hatching when the rains arrive, growing rapidly, spawning into the soft substrate, and dying as the pools evaporate, leaving only buried, drought-resistant eggs to carry the lineage through the dry season. The IUCN assessed it as Vulnerable in 2018, citing its restricted range and the degradation of the wetland habitats on which it depends.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius kirki was described by the South African ichthyologist R. A. Jubb in 1969. The original description appeared in Annals of the Cape Provincial Museum (Natural History), volume 8, pages 12–19. Jubb named the species in honour of R. G. Kirk, a fish biologist who worked for the Agricultural Research Services in Malawi and who collected material from the Lake Chilwa basin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Nothobranchius kirki Jubb, 1969, placed within the large genus Nothobranchius of the family Nothobranchiidae — the African annual killifishes.

The genus name Nothobranchius derives from the Greek nothos (false, spurious) and brangchia (gill), an allusion to the reduced or modified gill apparatus that distinguishes these killifishes anatomically from related groups. The species belongs to the broadly distributed East African Nothobranchius radiation, which has colonised ephemeral pools and seasonal floodplains from Ethiopia and Kenya south through Tanzania, Malawi, and Mozambique. Hobby population codes track collecting localities: the main Chilwa-basin population is coded U1, while a darker variant from Selima on the Lake Malawi shore is known as U8 aff. kirki and is kept separate in captivity to avoid hybridisation.

Morphology

Nothobranchius kirki is a compact, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum total length of around 2 in, making it a small-to-mid-sized member of the genus. Meristic counts recorded by the British Killifish Association are dorsal fin rays D = 15–17 and anal fin rays A = 15–18, figures consistent with the meristics of closely related species on the Malawian-Mozambican plateau.

Males are conspicuously coloured, as is typical across Nothobranchius: the body bears vivid iridescent scales that may show blue, green, or orange-red hues depending on light angle and population of origin, with red or orange elements in the caudal fin. The degree of red in the finnage and the precise pattern of scale iridescence varies between the U1 and U8 populations — the U8 aff. kirki form is noted by the British Killifish Association as having a distinctly darker coloration. Females are drab and brownish, as in all members of the genus, with rounded fins and without the male's iridescent display. Sexual dimorphism is thus extreme and immediately apparent.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the Lake Chilwa and Lake Chiuta basins in southern Malawi, with additional records from Zomba and Nselema noted by the American Killifish Association. Lake Chilwa is a shallow, endorheic (closed-basin) lake known for its dramatic water-level fluctuations; it has completely dried in historical times and its fringing swamps and marshlands are periodically inundated during the summer rains before contracting sharply during the dry season. It is precisely this boom-and-bust hydrology that suits an annual killifish.

Nothobranchius kirki inhabits temporary swamps, seasonal pools, floodplain ditches, and marshy areas with thick emergent vegetation bordering these lakes. FishBase records its water preferences as pH 6.0–7.0 and dH 4–10 (soft to moderately hard), with a temperature range of 68–73 °F — consistent with the cooler, high-altitude character of the Malawian plateau compared with hotter East African lowland sites. Wild fish have been collected at temperatures up to approximately 88 °F (88 °F, recorded by British Killifish Association collectors), suggesting tolerance of daily fluctuations beyond the mean range.

Feeding

In the wild, Nothobranchius kirki is a generalised carnivore of the water column and substrate surface, preying on aquatic invertebrates, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and zooplankton — the prey resources that proliferate rapidly in newly flooded seasonal pools. The compressed annual life cycle places a premium on rapid growth, so feeding intensity is high through the brief wet season.

In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of foods. The British Killifish Association notes a distinct preference for bloodworms (Chironomus larvae), which are an excellent source of vitamin B12 and are a natural component of the wild diet. Artemia nauplii, white worms, Daphnia, and small frozen foods are also taken readily. Proprietary dried killifish foods are accepted once fish are established. Bloodworm should form a regular but not exclusive component of the diet; variety supports immune function in a species with a naturally compressed lifespan.

Mating

Nothobranchius kirki is a classic annual killifish with a substrate-spawning mating system. In the wild, once seasonal pools fill after the first rains, males establish small territories and compete intensely — through lateral displays of spread fins and vivid coloration — for access to females. Because the breeding season is compressed to the weeks of available standing water, male-male competition and male display are pronounced.

The British Killifish Association describes the spawning act in detail: the male clasps the female in a characteristic 'S'-body posture, the pair diving into the top layer of detritus or soft mud together. Eggs are laid individually or in small batches during each plunge, with the female releasing an egg and the male fertilising it simultaneously as the pair burrow into the substrate. Males drive females hard during the spawning period, so adequate cover and, in captivity, multiple females per male are important.

Breeding

The eggs of Nothobranchius kirki are buried in soft substrate and must pass through a diapause — a period of developmental arrest — before they are able to hatch. In the wild this diapause corresponds to the dry season, which in the Lake Chilwa basin may last several months. The eggs remain viable through desiccation of the substrate; when the rains return and the pools refill, hatching is triggered. In the hobby the same cycle is managed artificially: a spawning mop or peat-fibre base is used to receive eggs, then removed, lightly squeezed, and sealed in a polythene bag or container and stored dry for approximately three to five months at room temperature. The British Killifish Association recommends checking the dried peat for 'eye-up' eggs — embryos in which the eyes are visible through the egg membrane — as the signal that the eggs are ready to be re-wetted.

To hatch, the dried peat is tipped into a shallow container of soft, slightly acidic water. Fry emerge within hours to a day or two. They are small and require appropriately sized first foods: newly hatched Artemia nauplii and microworms are ideal from the first day. Growth in Nothobranchius is rapid — the fish must compress an entire life cycle into a single wet season — and fry grow noticeably from week to week. Conditioning adults on varied live and frozen foods before setting them to spawn raises egg yield. FishBase records an incubation period of approximately four months under dry-storage conditions.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius kirki is suited to the experienced killifish keeper rather than a general community aquarium. Like all Nothobranchius it is short-lived in captivity — typically six to twelve months — and its maintenance is therefore built around a breeding cycle rather than long-term pet-fish keeping. FishBase describes the species as difficult to maintain, which reflects its sensitivity to warm temperatures and its intolerance of elevated nitrates compared with more robust aquarium fish.

The British Killifish Association recommends keeping the aquarium in the lower seventies Fahrenheit (roughly 70–73 °F), consistent with the cool Malawian plateau origin; temperatures much above 77 °F accelerate ageing and shorten the already brief lifespan. A heavily planted, dark, species-specific tank with a peat or coir substrate layer on the bottom is the standard setup. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.0, dH 4–10) is appropriate. The two known hobby populations — U1 (Chilwa) and U8 aff. kirki (Selima) — should not be crossed; hobbyists are encouraged to label stock and maintain population integrity.

Conservation

Nagy, Watters, and Tweddle assessed Nothobranchius kirki as Vulnerable (VU) for the 2018 IUCN Red List, with the assessment published 21 August 2018. The species qualifies for this status primarily under criterion B, reflecting its restricted extent of occurrence centred on the Lake Chilwa and Lake Chiuta systems in Malawi — a small, fragmented range in which any deterioration of the seasonal wetland habitats could reduce the available breeding sites rapidly.

Lake Chilwa itself is ecologically fragile: it is a closed-basin, shallow lake that has completely dried in the twentieth century and whose water levels are sensitive to both rainfall variability and water abstraction in its catchment. The fringing floodplain marshes on which N. kirki depends are under pressure from agricultural expansion, drainage for cultivation, and human settlement. Invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.), introduced for malaria control across sub-Saharan Africa, are a known threat to annual killifishes wherever their ranges overlap. The American Killifish Association's archive of 25 journal references in the Journal of the American Killifish Association attests to sustained hobbyist interest in the species, and the captive population held by BKA and AKA members constitutes a meaningful insurance colony for a fish with a naturally restricted wild range.
