Nothobranchius makondorum is a small annual killifish endemic to the seasonal floodplain pools and marshes of southeastern Tanzania and adjacent northeastern Mozambique, where it completes its entire life cycle within the brief wet season before its habitat evaporates to dry mud. Described from the Mbangara River drainage near Nangomba village, the species belongs to a diverse genus of African annual fishes celebrated for some of the most brilliant colouration in freshwater — vivid crimsons and blues in breeding males that evolved, in part, as a race against the clock imposed by a life measured in months. Its diapause-resistant eggs, buried in the mud, carry the population through the annual drought in suspended animation, hatching when seasonal rains refill the pools. The IUCN considers the species Least Concern given its relatively wide distribution across multiple river drainages, but the same agricultural expansion and floodplain modification that threatens its habitat across the region warrants continued attention.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius makondorum was described by Wildekamp, Shidlovskiy & Watters in 2009, with the type locality recorded as pools near the bridge east of Nangomba village on the Mbangara River, southeastern Tanzania (10°53.85′S, 38°33.02′E). The species is placed in the family Nothobranchiidae, the African annual killifishes, within the large and speciose genus Nothobranchius — a group distributed across the seasonally arid lowlands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa from West Africa to the Indian Ocean coast.

The specific epithet makondorum honours the Makonde people, a Bantu ethnic group indigenous to the Ruvuma region of southeastern Tanzania and northern Mozambique — the heartland of this species' known range. The genus name Nothobranchius derives from the Greek nothos (spurious, hybrid) and branchia (gills), a somewhat archaic reference that no longer reflects current anatomical understanding but remains the valid name under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid combination.

Within Nothobranchius, N. makondorum belongs to a complex of coastal-drainage species inhabiting the lowland river systems between the Ruvuma and Melela rivers. Its closest relatives share the same annual life history and floodplain pool habitat, and the fine-scale distribution of individual species often reflects the boundaries of individual river catchments.

Morphology

Males reach a maximum of approximately 2.5 in standard length (SL), with FishBase recording 2.5 in SL as the maximum for males and 2 in SL for females — making N. makondorum a typical small-to-medium Nothobranchius. The body form follows the genus pattern: laterally compressed, deep-bodied relative to length, with a rounded caudal fin and a somewhat upturned mouth well-placed for surface feeding. Scales are large and cycloid.

Breeding males are dramatically coloured in the manner typical of the genus, with vivid body pigmentation whose exact pattern varies among collection sites. The flanks display intense colouration — reds, oranges, and metallic blues are common in Nothobranchius of the eastern African coast, and caudal fin patterning (banding, marginal colouration) is taxonomically diagnostic. The sexual dichromatism is extreme: females are a drab, cryptic brownish-olive with little iridescence, a pattern that provides camouflage on the mud-floored pools where the species lives. This difference in colouration is among the most marked of any freshwater fish group.

The short, robust jaw and large gape are adaptations for an opportunistic invertebrate diet in ephemeral pools where prey diversity and abundance vary enormously between early and late wet season. The overall body plan is one optimised for rapid growth and early reproduction rather than longevity — a life history reflected in the simplicity of the skeleton and the relatively undifferentiated musculature compared with longer-lived fish.

Habitat

Nothobranchius makondorum inhabits temporary pools, seasonal marshes, and swampy backwaters on the coastal lowland floodplains of southeastern Tanzania and northeastern Mozambique. Its documented range spans the drainages of the Mbwemkuru, Lukuledi, and Ruvuma rivers, as well as smaller coastal drainages between the Ruvuma and Melela river systems — a stretch of eastern African coast characterised by seasonal rainfall that creates the ephemeral wetlands on which annual killifishes depend.

Water chemistry recorded at collection sites spans a considerable range: temperature 63–82 °F, pH 6.6–8.0, and conductivity 20–1,140 µS/cm — the wide conductivity range reflecting the diversity of substrates from soft sandy soils to more mineral-rich floodplain clays. FishBase records typical conditions of approximately 77 °F and pH 7, hardness around 4 dH. The pools are typically shallow, often turbid with suspended clay and organic matter, and heavily vegetated at the margins during the early wet season.

The defining feature of this habitat is its temporality. Pools form with the seasonal rains, persist for weeks to a few months, and then dry completely as the dry season advances. This pattern drives the entire biology of annual killifishes: no individual fish survives the drought; the population exists through the dry season solely as drought-resistant eggs buried in the substrate. The timing and duration of the wet season therefore directly determines reproductive success in any given year.

Feeding

In its seasonal pools, Nothobranchius makondorum feeds primarily on aquatic invertebrates — small crustaceans, insect larvae (particularly chironomid midges and mosquito larvae), worms, and other macroinvertebrates that colonise the pools rapidly after flooding. The upturned mouth and broad gape allow the fish to take prey from the water column and at the surface with equal ease.

As the pools age through the wet season, prey communities shift: early-season pools may be rich in zooplankton and small invertebrates; late-season pools, more crowded and depleted, may force the fish toward smaller or more varied items. The diet is broadly opportunistic, as is characteristic of a species that must achieve full growth, sexual maturity, and spawn within a window that may be as short as a few weeks.

In the aquarium, N. makondorum accepts a wide range of live and frozen foods readily: Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, bloodworm (frozen chironomid larvae), Tubifex, and small live invertebrates are all taken with vigour. Dry foods can be offered but are less eagerly taken. The high metabolic rate of annual killifishes means frequent feeding — two to three small meals daily — promotes the rapid growth these fish are capable of under good conditions.

Mating

Nothobranchius makondorum breeds by the substrate-spawning strategy universal among African annual killifishes: pairs dive together into soft mud, peat, or detritus at the pool floor, where the male drives the female downward in a spawning embrace and eggs are deposited directly into the substrate. There is no nest construction, no parental care, and no involvement of aquatic plants in the spawning process — the eggs are placed in the bottom sediment where they will remain dormant through the dry season.

In the wild, spawning begins essentially as soon as the fish hatch from the previous season's eggs and reach sexual maturity — a process that may take only a few weeks in warm, food-rich conditions. Males compete vigorously for access to females, and the brilliant colouration of breeding males functions in both inter-male competition and female mate choice. The intensity of male coloration may signal condition and genetic quality in species where mating opportunities are compressed into a short seasonal window.

Females may spawn with multiple males across the wet season, and the substrate becomes progressively seeded with eggs from many spawning events. Each individual spawning act deposits a small number of eggs — typically one to a few — compared with the large clutches produced by open-water scatterers, but the total egg load accumulated by a female over the season can be substantial. The embryos in the substrate then develop through the dry season at whatever pace the local moisture and temperature regime dictates.

Breeding

The eggs of Nothobranchius makondorum, like those of all African annual killifishes, undergo embryonic diapause — a state of arrested development in which the embryo pauses at one or more defined developmental stages before completing development and hatching. This adaptation allows the egg to survive the complete desiccation of the pool substrate, remaining viable in dry mud for months. Research using Nothobranchius embryos, including N. makondorum material, has contributed substantially to the scientific understanding of the mechanisms of embryonic diapause and their parallels with vertebrate aging.

In hobbyist practice, spawning is conducted on a layer of peat moss or coconut coir placed on the aquarium floor. After a period of spawning activity (typically four to six weeks), the substrate is removed, squeezed to near-dryness, bagged in sealed plastic, and stored at room temperature for a diapause period of three to five months. At the end of storage, the peat is flooded with soft, slightly acidic water to trigger hatching, which typically occurs within 24–48 hours. Fry are tiny but vigorous and can take Artemia nauplii and micro-worms from the first day.

Growth under good conditions is rapid: fish may reach sexual maturity within six to eight weeks of hatching, and first spawnings can occur while the fish are still visually immature to the inexperienced eye. The compressed lifecycle of annual killifishes rewards attentive husbandry — a well-managed spawning substrate from a single pair can yield hundreds of fry across a season, and the species is established in killifish-specialist collections where it is maintained as a living study of one of the most extreme life-history strategies in vertebrates.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius makondorum is maintained principally by specialist killifish hobbyists and aquarists with an interest in African annual species. It is not a beginner's fish, not because it is fragile, but because its annual biology demands a level of deliberate management — peat spawning, egg storage, synchronised hatching — that differs fundamentally from the husbandry of most ornamental fishes.

A breeding pair or trio is best housed in a small, densely planted aquarium of 5.5–10 US gal with a tight-fitting lid and subdued lighting; dark substrate and floating plants reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour. Water chemistry should match the species' collection range: temperature 68–79 °F, pH 6.6–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Frequent small water changes are important — these fish come from clean, newly flooded water and accumulate metabolic waste rapidly in small containers. A layer of peat or coconut coir on the tank floor serves as both substrate and spawning medium.

Because their natural lifespan is under one year, N. makondorum is kept more as a living cultural artefact of the African floodplain dry season than as a long-term display animal. The killifish hobby has developed a global network of keepers and strain curators who exchange eggs through the post — a practice that has preserved many species through collection-site losses in the wild. The British Killifish Association and equivalent national organisations in Europe and North America are the primary channels through which N. makondorum and its relatives circulate in the hobby.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius makondorum as Least Concern in December 2018, noting an extent of occurrence of 166,346 mi² and records from more than 25 threat-defined locations across multiple river drainages. This relatively wide footprint, distributed across the Mbwemkuru, Lukuledi, and Ruvuma systems and smaller coastal catchments, underpins the LC assessment and suggests the species is not immediately threatened at the range level.

However, the threats the IUCN identifies are real and ongoing: agricultural expansion and urban development are modifying floodplain hydrology across southeastern Tanzania and northern Mozambique, converting seasonal wetlands to permanent irrigated land or draining them for cultivation. These changes render temporary pools unsuitable for annual killifishes by altering the timing, duration, or very existence of the seasonal flooding cycle that the annual life history depends upon. A species that cannot survive a single missed wet season is acutely sensitive to interannual variability in rainfall and to any human modification that shortens or eliminates the flooded period.

The fragmented distribution of Nothobranchius species — typically one species per river basin or sub-basin, with little or no movement between drainages — means that local population extirpation is effectively permanent. Conservation of N. makondorum in the long run depends on the integrity of the floodplain systems of the southeastern Tanzanian coastal lowlands, and the maintenance of traditional land-use practices that tolerate seasonal wetlands rather than eliminating them. Hobbyist egg-banking through killifish clubs provides a partial safety net but is not a substitute for habitat protection.
