Taxonomy & naming
Nothobranchius melanospilus was described by the German zoologist Georg Pfeffer in 1896, placing it in the family Nothobranchiidae — the African annual killifishes. The authority is given in parentheses, indicating that the species has been moved from the genus in which Pfeffer originally placed it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the valid combination as Nothobranchius melanospilus (Pfeffer, 1896).
The specific epithet is built from two Greek roots: melas, meaning black, and spilos, meaning spot or mark — a reference to the spotted pattern of females, which display dark spots on a lighter body rather than the vivid coloured ornamentation of the males. The genus name Nothobranchius derives from nothos (false or spurious) and branchion (gill), a somewhat archaic allusion to the reduced gill anatomy of early-described members of the group.
Within the genus, N. melanospilus has attracted cytogenetic attention. Wild populations on Unguja Island (Zanzibar) and the adjacent mainland carry a diploid number of 2n = 38, and the karyotype structure is documented as unique within the genus — making it of interest to researchers working on the rapid chromosomal evolution seen across East African annual killifishes. Several congeners occur syntopically across its range, including N. janpapi, N. eggersi, N. annectens, and N. ocellatus, reflecting the high local diversity of annual killifishes in coastal Tanzanian drainage systems.
Morphology
Nothobranchius melanospilus is a small, compact killifish reaching a maximum of approximately 2 in standard length (males), with females slightly smaller. Like most Nothobranchius, there is strong sexual dichromatism. Males are brightly coloured with iridescent scales that vary across populations but typically show red, orange, or blue-green body flanks with darker edging on the scales producing a reticulated or net-like pattern, and contrasting fin coloration. The caudal fin of males is often the most visually striking structure, frequently displaying bands or spots of intense colour.
Females conform to the genus-wide pattern of cryptic colouration — a plain grey-brown or olive body bearing the dark spots from which the species takes its name. The spotted female pattern is diagnostic relative to some co-occurring congeners. Both sexes have the stout, slightly dorsoventrally compressed body form typical of the genus, with the mouth directed upward and forward, adapted for surface and mid-water feeding. The scales are relatively large for the body size.
Habitat
Nothobranchius melanospilus occupies seasonal freshwater wetlands along the coastal lowlands of eastern Tanzania, from the lower Pangani, Wami, Ruvu, Mbezi, Ruhoi, and Rufiji drainages south through the Matandu and Mbwemkuru rivers, and including Unguja Island (Zanzibar). Populations are also recorded from the Umba and Ramisi rivers in southern Kenya. The species' elevational range is low — recorded from 3–673 ft above sea level — consistent with its association with coastal floodplain systems.
The habitats are characteristically temporary: seasonal pools, intermittent marshes, shallow floodplain depressions, rice fields, and roadside ditches that fill during the wet season and dry out completely for part of the year. The substrate is often vertisol-type mud or clay — the heavy, shrink-swell soils of tropical coastal savannas that crack when dry and become waterlogged when wet, and which retain egg integrity during the dry phase.
Water chemistry data collected across the species' range reveals considerable variation: temperature 76–93 °F (average 85 °F), pH 6.50–8.48 (average 7.62), and conductivity 24–2,292 µS/cm (average 365 µS/cm). The wide conductivity range — from nearly distilled to moderately hard — reflects the spectrum from forest-edge seepage pools to more open savanna depressions that concentrate dissolved salts seasonally. The IUCN assessment records water as typically turbid with seasonal conditions of 75–93 °F and pH 6.5–8.5.
Feeding
Nothobranchius melanospilus is a generalist carnivore in the wild, feeding opportunistically on whatever invertebrates are available in its seasonal pools. The diet includes small aquatic insects and their larvae, crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton. The upturned mouth position is well suited to taking prey at the water surface and in the mid-column, and the species will also pick invertebrates from the substrate and vegetation.
In the aquarium, N. melanospilus is an enthusiastic and undemanding feeder. It accepts a wide range of live and frozen foods — daphnia, artemia, bloodworm, tubifex, and glass worm — and will take high-quality dried foods once acclimatised. Given its fast life cycle, regular feeding with nutritious, varied food accelerates growth, ensures rapid attainment of sexual maturity, and supports the energetic demands of breeding activity that begins within weeks of hatching.
Mating
Nothobranchius melanospilus is an annual species and a substrate-spawner, and its mating system is shaped entirely by the brevity and urgency of the wet season. As soon as the seasonal pool fills and the fish hatch from their buried eggs, growth, maturation, and breeding begin with exceptional speed — males reach sexual maturity in roughly six weeks. Competition among males for access to females is intense, and males display their brightest colouration to attract mates and deter rivals.
Spawning is initiated by the male, who courts a receptive female through lateral displays and fin-spreading. When the female signals acceptance, the pair move together to the substrate, where the male curves his body around the female as eggs and sperm are released simultaneously. The pair make a brief, forceful push into the soft mud or peat, burying a small clutch of eggs a centimetre or more below the surface with each spawning act. The process repeats many times over the course of days and weeks, with a single pair producing numerous eggs throughout the wet season.
Life-cycle behaviour varies by population: southern populations at lower elevations are fully annual — the entire population senesces with the drying pool — while some central and northern populations may be semi-annual, completing two generations per year where pools persist longer or refill partially.
Breeding
The eggs of Nothobranchius melanospilus are deposited directly into the substrate and undergo embryonic diapause — a period of developmental arrest that allows them to survive the complete evaporation of their pool. Buried in the mud or clay, the eggs remain viable through weeks to months of heat and desiccation, resuming development and hatching only when the pool refills at the onset of the next rainy season. This diapause strategy is the defining adaptation of African annual killifishes and the reason they can colonise habitats that offer no permanent water.
In the aquarium hobby, this biology is replicated using peat moss or coconut coir as a spawning medium: a shallow tray of moist peat is placed in the tank, the pair spawns into it over several weeks, and then the medium is removed, gently squeezed to remove excess moisture, and stored in a sealed bag or container at room temperature for approximately three months. Re-wetting the peat at the end of that period triggers hatching within hours to days. Freshly hatched fry are relatively large and vigorous compared with those of many other killifish groups, and begin feeding on micro-foods almost immediately. Growth is fast; fish can be breeding-ready in six weeks.
The IUCN assessment and hobbyist sources confirm approximately three months as the standard incubation period at room temperature, aligning with the Tanzanian coastal dry season duration.
In the aquarium
Nothobranchius melanospilus is well established in the killifish hobby and has been maintained by enthusiast groups for decades. It is considered a moderate-difficulty species — hardy and willing to breed, but requiring the short life cycle and peat-based breeding protocol that distinguishes annual Nothobranchius from the longer-lived plant-spawning killies.
A small tank of 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a pair or trio. The water need not be particularly soft or acidic — the wild range encompasses pH 6.5–8.5 and a wide conductivity spectrum — though moderately soft to moderately hard neutral water suits most captive strains well. Temperature should be kept in the range of 72–82 °F; overheating accelerates the already-short lifespan. Tannin-stained water, a dark substrate, and subdued lighting show the male's colours to best advantage and reduce stress for both sexes. A tight-fitting lid is advisable.
The species is best kept in single-species groups or with very small, fast-moving dither fish; males will harass females persistently and keeping two or three females per male distributes that pressure. The captive lifespan typically does not exceed 12–18 months even under ideal conditions, reflecting the physiological programming of an annual species. Hobbyists who work with Nothobranchius often maintain multiple age cohorts from successive peat batches to ensure continuity of a strain. The species has no record of commercial wild collection; all aquarium specimens are captive-bred.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius melanospilus as Least Concern in May 2020 (published 2021). The assessment is based on an extent of occurrence of approximately 90,86 mi² and documented presence across more than 25 locations spanning multiple independent river drainages in coastal Tanzania and Kenya — a broad and geographically distributed range that buffers the species against localised extirpation events.
Nonetheless, the threats facing the species are real and increasing. The IUCN assessment identifies habitat modification from urbanisation and agricultural expansion as affecting a minority of the range, and the pattern is consistent with wider pressures on Tanzania's coastal wetlands: seasonal pools and floodplain marshes are drained for rice cultivation, converted to other agriculture, or affected by hydrological changes from upstream water abstraction. The temporary, shallow nature of the habitat means it is particularly vulnerable to land-use change; pools that are deepened, perennialised, or drained lose their utility for an annual species entirely.
Two of the species' population areas benefit from formal protection: Saadani National Park and the Selous Game Reserve (now Nyerere National Park) both encompass portions of the range. The species' complete dependence on seasonal wetlands, however, means that even within protected areas it is sensitive to rainfall variability and any hydrological intervention affecting the seasonal flood pulse. Climate-driven shifts in rainfall seasonality in eastern Africa represent a longer-term but potentially significant concern for the persistence of the temporary pool habitats on which this and many other Nothobranchius species depend.
