The spotted-tail notho is one of the most widely distributed members of its genus, ranging from the lower Zambezi floodplain south through coastal Mozambique to the Mkuze River system in South Africa, with populations also recorded in Malawi and southeastern Zimbabwe. Males are among the most variable in coloration of any Nothobranchius — red and blue colour forms exist side-by-side, likely representing the same underlying pigment pattern expressed differently — with red spotting on the head serving as the diagnostic character that separates this species from its close relatives. Like all members of the genus, it is a true annual killifish: adults live and die within a single wet season, leaving behind a cohort of diapause-arrested eggs buried in the mud of temporary pools that carry the lineage through the long African dry season.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius orthonotus was described by the German naturalist Wilhelm Peters in 1844, based on material collected from the Mozambique coast during his East African expedition. The authority is presented in parentheses because Peters originally placed the species in a different genus; it was subsequently transferred to Nothobranchius. The valid combination Nothobranchius orthonotus (Peters, 1844) is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong).

The genus Nothobranchius belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes. It is one of the largest genera of annual killifishes, centred on sub-Saharan Africa east of the Congo basin. Nothobranchius orthonotus belongs to the eastern African lineage of the genus, whose species are adapted to the strongly seasonal savanna-and-floodplain habitats of the coastal plain from Tanzania south into South Africa.

The specific epithet orthonotus is from the Greek orthos (straight, upright) and noton (back), possibly alluding to the straight dorsal profile or the erect stance of the dorsal fin. The species is sometimes listed under outdated synonyms in older aquarium literature but the name orthonotus has been stable since its original description.

The name Nothobranchius kuhntae, described by Ernst Ahl in 1935 from material collected near Beira on the lower Pungwe River in coastal Mozambique, has also been used for this fish; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both treat it as a synonym of Nothobranchius orthonotus. The Pungwe locality falls within the broader coastal-plain range documented for N. orthonotus in Mozambique.

Morphology

Nothobranchius orthonotus is a robust killifish reaching up to 4 in total length according to FishBase — large for the genus and considerably stouter in build than many of its congeners. The head is large and well-scaled, a feature noted in the species description. Fin-ray counts are moderately high: 15–16 rays in the dorsal fin and 14–17 in the anal fin, both soft-rayed with no spines. The caudal fin is large and rounded to semi-truncate. Lateral-series scale counts run 27–32.

Male coloration is strikingly variable. Two colour forms are widely documented — a red form in which the body scales bear red spots and a blue form in which the same scales show iridescent blue — but these are understood to represent variable expression of a single underlying pattern rather than separate populations or subspecies. In both forms, red spots on the head are the diagnostic feature separating N. orthonotus from similar species. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins carry colour as well, typically matching or extending the body pattern.

Females are plain fleshy brown with slight silvery or bluish iridescence on the scales and clear, unpatterned fins — the typical cryptic coloration of annual killifish females, which must survive undetected in open pools while males display. Females are also slightly smaller and more fusiform in profile than the deep-bodied males.

Habitat

Nothobranchius orthonotus inhabits temporary pools, seasonal floodplains, swamps, rice fields, ditches, and slow-moving river sections with aquatic vegetation cover across the coastal plain of eastern Africa. Its native range extends from the lower Zambezi region in central Mozambique southward to the Mkuze River system in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, with records also from southern Malawi and southeastern Zimbabwe. SANBI describes populations in Mozambique as widespread and common.

The water bodies this species colonises are fundamentally ephemeral: they fill during the summer rains, support a brief but intense period of fish activity, then dry out completely for months during the dry season. FishBase records water chemistry of pH 6.5–7.5 and hardness around dH 15 — slightly soft to moderately hard and close to neutral, reflecting the calcareous-influenced soils of the coastal lowland plain rather than the acid blackwater of West African forest killies. Water temperatures in these shallow seasonal pools typically range from warm to hot during the wet season.

The species is described as benthopelagic — occupying mid-water to bottom zones in these generally shallow habitats, where the soft substrates of mud, detritus, and plant debris in which eggs are deposited accumulate. It is non-migratory; like all annual Nothobranchius, it completes its entire life within a single pool or cluster of pools connected by seasonal floods.

Feeding

Like all Nothobranchius, N. orthonotus feeds primarily on small invertebrates. In the temporary pools and flooded margins it inhabits, prey items include aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other small invertebrates that proliferate rapidly when seasonal rains fill the pools. The species is described as a generalist carnivore rather than a specialist, taking whatever suitably-sized live prey the ephemeral habitat provides.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, tubifex, and similar items form the staple diet. High-quality small dried foods may be taken once the fish is settled, but live and frozen prey are the most reliable choices for conditioning breeding adults and maintaining peak colour. Because the natural life cycle is compressed into a single wet season, annual killies feed aggressively and grow rapidly; generous feeding accelerates the natural pace of development.

Mating

Nothobranchius orthonotus is a substrate-spawning annual killifish. Males are vigorously territorial and display intensely to females, spreading their colourful dorsal, anal, and caudal fins to present the maximum surface area of pigment. Courtship is direct and energetic: a displaying male approaches the female with fins spread and body curved, driving her toward the substrate. The pair dive into the soft mud or detritus together, with the male wrapped around the female in a typical killifish spawning embrace, and a single egg is deposited and fertilised within the substrate before the pair surface again.

Spawning occurs daily throughout the wet season as long as both sexes are present and conditions are suitable. Because wild fish have only one season to reproduce before the pool dries, the pace is relentless: males compete intensely for access to females and a ripe female will spawn with multiple males. Red spots on the head appear to function as a male quality signal — the diagnostic character that distinguishes this species is simultaneously the display feature most visible to a discriminating female.

Breeding

Eggs of Nothobranchius orthonotus are deposited singly into the substrate during each spawning embrace and left buried in the mud as the pool fills and eventually dries. The eggs are tough, drought-resistant structures that arrest development at one or more diapause stages — a programmed developmental pause that allows the embryo to survive months of desiccation while awaiting the return of rain. When the pool refills, the combination of hydration and, in some cases, temperature drop or light cues releases the diapause and hatching proceeds rapidly.

In the hobby, this cycle is replicated using peat moss or coconut coir as the spawning medium. After a spawning period of several weeks, the peat is removed, lightly dried, and sealed into a plastic bag for storage at around 79–82 °F. The incubation period before re-wetting varies with species and temperature; for N. orthonotus the literature records a range of roughly 6–12 weeks, though some eggs may require longer and multiple re-wetting attempts can improve hatch rates by releasing different diapause cohorts. Fry are large by killifish standards and take newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii from first feeding, which simplifies early rearing considerably compared with smaller-eggged species. Growth is rapid and fish can reach sexual maturity in as little as four weeks under warm conditions.

Adults are short-lived by design: wild fish seldom survive beyond one wet season, and aquarium specimens kept warm and well-fed commonly begin to age visibly within six months, with a lifespan of eight to twelve months considered typical. Maintaining a rolling breeding programme with overlapping generations is the standard approach in the killifish hobby to keep the strain going indefinitely.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius orthonotus is a rewarding species for aquarists with experience in annual killifishes, combining large size, impressive male coloration, and the compelling natural-history story of the annual life cycle. A species tank is strongly recommended: males are aggressive with one another and with similar species, and females need visual separation from displaying males or they will be harassed constantly. A ratio of one male to two or three females, or small groups of one male and multiple females in a well-planted tank of at least 15 US gal, is a workable setup.

Water chemistry should be kept close to the natural parameters: pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness, and temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F. The tank should be covered securely — annual killies are capable jumpers. Subdued lighting, floating plants, and a dark substrate best approximate the low-visibility conditions of a Mozambican seasonal pool and seem to reduce stress and aggression. A layer of peat or fine sand substrate that the fish can dig into makes spawning natural and straightforward.

Because the species is relatively large for Nothobranchius, tankmates in a community setting risk predation of small fishes or invertebrates; any companion must be able to hold its own. However, most keepers run this species in a dedicated setup, with the focus on producing eggs and rearing the next generation rather than on display. The colour variability of males — the red and blue forms sometimes occurring in the same wild collection — gives the species additional visual interest and has made it popular with hobbyists who compare strains from different collection localities.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius orthonotus as Least Concern in January 2019, reflecting its relatively wide distribution across the coastal lowlands of Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and South Africa and the absence of evidence for rapid population decline. SANBI similarly records the species as widespread and common across its Mozambican core range.

Nevertheless, the assessment notes that populations face real threats. Destruction of seasonal pans — the ephemeral pools and floodplain depressions the species depends on — through drainage for agriculture and road construction removes breeding habitat that cannot easily be replaced. Anti-malarial and tsetse-fly spraying programmes historically applied organochlorine insecticides to exactly the kind of shallow, vegetated seasonal pools that Nothobranchius species inhabit, with direct lethal effects on invertebrate prey communities and potentially on the fish themselves. These pressures are ongoing in parts of the range.

The annual life history, while a vulnerability in terms of habitat permanence, also confers a degree of resilience: as long as at least some eggs survive a dry season in the soil, even a pool that appeared completely dry and lifeless can produce a new generation of adults when the rains return. This seed-bank quality of the egg cohort makes total local extinction harder to achieve than for perennial species, but does not protect against permanent habitat loss, persistent chemical contamination of the substrate, or the conversion of floodplain to irrigated agriculture — all of which destroy the egg bank along with the pool.
