Nothobranchius patrizii is a short-lived annual killifish of the coastal plains of Kenya and Somalia, where it inhabits shallow, seasonally drying pools, swamps, and roadside ditches in savanna country. Males flash vivid blue flanks that earned the species its trade name 'blue notho', but the fish's defining biological story is ecological: it completes its entire life cycle before the rains end, buries its drought-resistant eggs in soft mud, and dies — leaving those eggs to pass the long dry season in arrested development before hatching when water returns. The IUCN assessed the species as Least Concern in 2019, though agricultural expansion and habitat modification along Kenya's coast raise concern for local populations.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius patrizii was described by the Italian ichthyologist Decio Vinciguerra in 1927, based on material collected from coastal East Africa. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Nothobranchius patrizii (Vinciguerra, 1927), placing it in the large annual killifish genus Nothobranchius within the family Nothobranchiidae. The authority is given in parentheses to indicate that Vinciguerra originally assigned the species to a different genus.

The genus name Nothobranchius combines the Greek nothos (false, spurious) with branchia (gills), a somewhat dated allusion to the accessory respiratory anatomy of the group. The specific epithet patrizii honours a patron or naturalist of the period to whom Vinciguerra dedicated the species; the eponym follows standard practice for nineteenth- and early twentieth-century descriptions from Italian colonial-era expeditions to East Africa.

Within the genus, N. patrizii is classified by the American Killifish Association under their Class 4 (genus Nothobranchius), and the species has accrued a hobbyist literature of at least 25 articles in the Journal of the American Killifish Association across its documented collection localities. Fourteen distinct collection localities from the Kenya–Somalia border region are on record, reflecting the close attention killifish keepers pay to geographic origin and the documented variation between populations.

Morphology

Nothobranchius patrizii is a small, compact killifish reaching a maximum of 2 in total length (FishBase), a typical size for the genus. The body is moderately laterally compressed with a short, blunt snout and an upturned mouth characteristic of a surface and near-surface feeder. Males are strongly sexually dichromatic and are considerably more colourful than females.

Male colouration is dominated by bright metallic blue on the flanks — hence the vernacular 'blue notho' — overlaid with variable red or orange scale edges depending on population and condition. The dorsal and caudal fins carry reddish patterning. The overall impression is of a bold, jewel-like fish that displays prominently in breeding season. Females are substantially plainer, with a brownish to tan body and little or no iridescent colour — camouflage consistent with the species' life in turbid, mud-bottomed seasonal pools.

As in all Nothobranchius, the body scales are cycloid and moderately large, and the caudal fin is rounded. There is no meaningful external sexual dimorphism in meristics; differences are almost entirely chromatic and in body depth, females becoming notably deep-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Nothobranchius patrizii occupies a relatively restricted range centred on the Kenya–Somalia border region, with additional records from the Wabi Shebele basin in Ethiopia. Its core habitat is the coastal plains and savanna lowlands of this zone, where seasonal rainfall creates temporary pools, marshes, swamps, and flooded roadside ditches that fill during the rains and dry completely during the annual dry season.

The IUCN assessment gives an extent of occurrence of 64,592 mi² and characterises the habitat as ephemeral pools and marshes in seasonally arid savanna. Substrate is critically important: the species favours pools with vertisol-type soils — swelling clays with fine particle sizes that hold enough moisture to sustain buried eggs through the dry season. Water conditions recorded by the IUCN assessors range from 79–91 °F, pH 6.1–8.3, and conductivity 168–358 µS/cm; the water is typically turbid. FishBase gives a slightly broader thermal range of 73–86 °F for aquarium-kept individuals.

Documented collection localities extend from the Mnanzini and Msulamini creek drainages near Malindi in coastal Kenya northward to the Genale, Giohar, Jennale, Goba, and Jerrow sites in the lower Jubba drainage near the Somali border, and to Sungumi, Harenaga Swamp, Warfa, and the Duldul and Ramisi sites — a geographic spread that underlines the species' association with the coastal-plain drainage systems of the Kenya–Somalia region.

Feeding

Like most Nothobranchius species, N. patrizii is a generalist carnivore, feeding on invertebrates available in its ephemeral pool habitat. In the wild, the diet consists primarily of small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and whatever falls from emergent or overhanging vegetation — supplemented by any other animal matter small enough to take.

Because annual killifish have such compressed life spans, feeding is aggressive and nearly continuous during the brief wet season. Growth rates are correspondingly fast; the fish must reach reproductive maturity before its pool dries. In captivity, N. patrizii is straightforward to feed. Live foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and mosquito larvae elicit the strongest response and are valuable for conditioning breeders. Frozen bloodworm, Artemia, and other meaty frozen foods are accepted readily. The species is not a grazer and should not be expected to eat plant-based or predominantly dry foods as a staple.

Mating

Nothobranchius patrizii is an annual, substrate-spawning killifish whose reproductive behaviour is tightly adapted to the seasonally ephemeral nature of its habitat. Males court females with intense lateral displays, spreading their colourful fins and driving toward the female in direct competition with rival males. The pools these fish inhabit can be small and crowded, and male–male competition is vigorous.

Mating takes place through a spawning dive: a receptive female and a courting male position themselves side by side near or at the mud surface, then drive downward together into the substrate. The pair burrow briefly into the soft mud or peat-like detritus, releasing a small number of eggs (typically one to a few per dive) that are fertilised and immediately embedded in the substrate. This dive-spawn sequence is repeated many times over the course of a breeding session. The embedding in substrate is not merely incidental — the eggs depend on physical contact with moist, oxygen-poor mud to initiate and maintain diapause.

Breeding

The breeding biology of N. patrizii follows the annual killifish pattern: eggs deposited in the soft mud pass through a period of diapause — arrested embryonic development — that allows them to survive the dry season while their parents' pool evaporates and the adults die. When the rains return and refill the basin, the eggs hatch, and the new generation grows to reproductive maturity within weeks. The entire life cycle from egg to death of a wild adult can be completed in under a year, sometimes in just a few months.

In the hobby, the spawning medium is typically peat moss or coconut coir, provided as a soft, dark layer several centimetres deep on the tank floor. After spawning, the medium is removed, gently pressed to remove excess water, placed in a sealed bag or container, and stored dry for a conditioning period — commonly six to twelve weeks, though optimal incubation duration varies. The bag is labelled with the collection locality and date; killifish keepers track population provenance carefully. At the end of the dry period the peat is re-wetted with aged, slightly soft water and hatching occurs, often within 24–48 hours. Eggs that fail to hatch in the first wetting can sometimes be stimulated by a second drying-and-rewetting cycle. Fry are relatively large at hatching compared with non-annual killies and can take baby brine shrimp nauplii from day one.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius patrizii is a manageable species for a killifish keeper with experience of annual Nothobranchius, though it carries the challenges inherent to the group: a short life span (typically under a year in captivity even under good conditions), the need for a spawning substrate and a dry incubation period, and male aggression that limits mixed-sex housing unless space and cover are adequate.

Because the species is from warm savanna lowlands, aquarium temperatures toward the warmer end of the recorded range (79–86 °F) are appropriate; the IUCN data gives 79–91 °F in the wild. Water chemistry should be soft to moderately hard and neutral to slightly alkaline, reflecting the pH 6.1–8.3 and conductivity 168–358 µS/cm of wild sites. Turbid conditions are natural, though clear, clean water is preferred in captivity for visibility and fish health. The tank should have a substrate layer of peat or coir for spawning, a tight-fitting lid (males in particular are prone to jumping), and floating plants or other cover to break line of sight between males and reduce stress on females.

FishBase notes the species is 'difficult to maintain in the aquarium', a caution reflecting the short life span, sensitivity to incorrect incubation management, and the need to time the hatching cycle correctly. The AKA lists 14 collection localities with active hobbyist populations, and fish with specific locality codes (e.g. Sungumi, Ramisi KEN 2008-23, Duldul KEN 10-7) are available through killifish society networks. Maintaining locality purity is considered important within the hobby to preserve the genetic integrity of distinct wild populations.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessment by Nagy and Watters (2019) assigns Nothobranchius patrizii to Least Concern, based on a moderately broad extent of occurrence (64,592 mi²) and the absence of evidence for population decline meeting threatened thresholds at the time of assessment. However, the assessors identified active threats. Along the Kenyan coast, small-scale farming expansion and increasing agricultural land use near ephemeral pool habitats reduce the availability and quality of breeding sites. In Somalia, drought and broader climate variability threaten the species' northern range. Population trends are recorded as unknown.

The life-history traits of annual killifish make them simultaneously resilient in one sense — the egg bank in the soil provides insurance against a single catastrophic dry season — and extremely vulnerable in another. If a pool is permanently drained, converted to agricultural land, or its catchment so altered that it no longer floods on a seasonal schedule, the local population is extirpated and there is no immigration source in the landscape. The species' fragmented, pool-by-pool distribution means that each locality is effectively its own isolated unit; the 14 documented collection sites in the Kenya–Somalia border zone represent distinct, non-interchangeable wild populations.

The killifish hobby community plays a practical role in maintaining living populations of N. patrizii: the AKA documents 25 JAKA journal articles on this species, and multiple collection localities are maintained as captive strains by hobbyists. This ex situ reservoir has conservation value for species whose wild habitats are under increasing pressure from agricultural encroachment, though it cannot substitute for the protection of wild pool habitats and their surrounding catchments.
