Taxonomy & naming
Nothobranchius prognathus was described in 1990 by the German killifish specialists H.-O. Berkenkamp and V. Etzel. The type locality is recorded as a swamp pool in Morogoro District, Tanzania, situated approximately 4 mi from Kimamba on the road toward Kilosa, at coordinates 06°46′30″ S, 37°12′30″ E. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke and van der Laan) records the valid name as Nothobranchius prognathus Berkenkamp & Etzel, 1990.
The genus Nothobranchius belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes. It encompasses the majority of eastern and southern African annual killifishes and is one of the most species-rich genera of egg-burying annuals in the world. The specific epithet prognathus is derived from the Greek pro (forward) and gnathos (jaw), referring to a distinctly projecting lower jaw that characterises this species among its congeners.
The species sits in the broader eastern Tanzanian radiation of Nothobranchius, a group of endemics associated with coastal and sub-coastal drainage systems between the Rufiji and Pangani river basins. The Wild Nothos database and FishBase both treat N. prognathus as a valid, monotypic species with no described subspecies or recognised geographical variants in the hobby literature.
Morphology
Nothobranchius prognathus is a small species; the holotype measured 1.5 in standard length, and FishBase records a maximum of 1.5 in SL for males. Like other members of the genus it is sexually dichromatic: males are the more vividly coloured sex, displaying the intense flank and fin patterning typical of Nothobranchius, while females are cryptic brownish fish with rounded, less ornamented fins.
The projecting lower jaw that gives the species its name is the most reliable external character distinguishing it from similar eastern Tanzanian Nothobranchius. The body form is robust and somewhat laterally compressed, as typical of the genus. Scales are cycloid, moderately large, and cover the body and much of the head. Fin formulae and meristic details are recorded in the original description by Berkenkamp and Etzel (1990).
Sexual dimorphism is strong and consistent: males develop vivid colouration used in territorial and courtship displays, while females retain a drab, camouflaged appearance throughout their brief lives. This pattern — bright males, drab females — is the rule across Nothobranchius and reflects the intense sexual selection operating in the confined, temporary-pool habitats the genus occupies.
Habitat
Nothobranchius prognathus is confined to eastern Tanzania, with records from the Tendigo swamp area, the Mkata River floodplains, and the upper Wami River drainage more broadly. The Wami flows roughly east from the Uluguru foothills to the Indian Ocean, and the species occupies its upper reaches in Morogoro District at low to moderate elevation.
The habitat is seasonal swamp pools — shallow, isolated bodies of standing water that form on clay-heavy soils during the rains and dry out completely during the dry season. These pools are typically turbid, supporting little submerged vegetation but accumulating a layer of soft organic mud in which the fish spawn. Water conditions recorded in the field include temperatures of 73–86 °F, pH 7.1–8.0, and conductivity of 100–400 µS/cm — relatively warm, near-neutral to mildly alkaline water characteristic of the low-elevation East African savanna, in contrast to the acidic, soft water associated with many West African killies.
The IUCN assessment documents an extent of occurrence of approximately 4,488 mi² and an area of occupancy of approximately 129 mi². These figures reflect the fragmented, pool-by-pool distribution typical of annual Nothobranchius: the fish does not occupy rivers or permanent water bodies, only the ephemeral overflow habitat that connects hydrologically to the Wami system.
Feeding
In the wild, Nothobranchius prognathus feeds opportunistically on the invertebrate fauna of its temporary pools. Small aquatic insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and any other invertebrates that colonise the seasonal pools are all taken. The short growing season and high adult mortality impose intense selection for rapid growth, and the fish feed voraciously throughout their brief lives.
In the aquarium, N. prognathus accepts a wide range of live, frozen, and prepared foods. Live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and tubifex are all eagerly taken and form the basis of most hobbyist feeding regimes. A varied diet that includes both crustacean and insect material helps maintain condition and colouration in males. Prepared granular or micropellet foods are accepted by most individuals once established, but live and frozen items should form the core of the diet.
Mating
Nothobranchius prognathus follows the classic annual killifish mating system: an intense, compressed reproductive period in which males compete aggressively for access to females, with courtship displays centred on the male's vivid colouration. Display behaviour includes lateral posturing, fin spreading, and direct approaches toward females. When a female is receptive, the pair drive together toward the substrate.
The mating act is a brief, tight embrace in which the male curves his body around the female as both fish dive partially or fully into the soft mud or peat of the pool floor. Eggs are deposited singly or in small groups directly into the substrate with each dive. A pair may repeat this sequence many times across a single breeding session. Females control the pace of spawning and can be harassed by persistently displaying males in confined conditions; providing visual breaks and adequate space reduces stress on females in captivity.
Breeding
The breeding biology of N. prognathus is that of a true annual killifish: eggs are spawned into and left buried in the substrate, where they undergo diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — that allows them to survive the complete desiccation of the pool during the dry season. In nature this diapause period corresponds to months of drought; in the hobby, the peat or coir medium containing the eggs is removed from the aquarium, lightly pressed, sealed in a plastic bag or container, and stored dry at room temperature for a period appropriate to the species. For N. prognathus, the Wild Nothos database records embryonic development at room temperature taking approximately 3–4 months in peat moss before the eggs are ready for wetting.
Hatching is triggered by flooding the storage medium with cool, soft water — simulating the onset of the rainy season. Fry emerge rapidly, are immediately free-swimming, and must be fed infusoria, vinegar eels, or commercial fry foods within hours of hatching. Growth is fast: in warm conditions fry may reach sexual maturity in as little as 6–8 weeks. Adult lifespans mirror the wild season length — most individuals survive only a few months under aquarium conditions even without environmental stress, and the hobby practice is to time breeding projects around this compact life cycle.
The breeding mode is recorded as Annual / soil-spawner (diapausing eggs). The fish is not a plant-spawner and its eggs require a dry storage period to complete development normally.
In the aquarium
Nothobranchius prognathus is an attractive but specialist fish suited to the experienced killifish hobbyist rather than a general community aquarium. A species tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a single trio (one male, two females); multiple males can be kept together only in larger, heavily decorated tanks where subordinate males can avoid constant harassment. Dense plantings, floating cover, and driftwood reduce aggression and give females refuge.
Water conditions should replicate the species' native habitat: temperature 73–82 °F, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness consistent with the 100–400 µS/cm conductivity recorded in the field. A soft substrate layer of peat or fine sand is essential for spawning; a dedicated peat spawning mop or tray inserted into the tank makes egg collection straightforward. The tank should be covered, as killies are capable jumpers.
The compressed life cycle is a central feature of keeping annual killies: the hobbyist maintains not a single generation of adults but a rolling stock of eggs at various diapause stages, coordinating wetting and hatching across time to ensure continuity. This lifecycle management is one of the pleasures of the genus for experienced keepers. N. prognathus is occasionally available through specialist killifish societies and breeders but is not a common commercial aquarium fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius prognathus as Near Threatened in May 2020 (assessment date 18 May 2020), based on its restricted range and evidence of continuing habitat decline. The extent of occurrence is approximately 4,488 mi² and the area of occupancy approximately 129 mi² — small figures that place the species close to the thresholds for Vulnerable status under the range-size criteria.
The primary threats are habitat degradation driven by agricultural expansion, urban development, and road construction in the Morogoro District and Wami basin. These activities alter the hydrology of the low-lying clay plains on which seasonal pools form, reducing inundation duration, changing drainage patterns, and increasing sedimentation. Permanent alteration of a pool's seasonal flood regime eliminates the habitat entirely for an annual killifish, since the species cannot persist in reduced but permanent water — it requires the full annual cycle of flooding and desiccation.
The IUCN assessment notes that the species occurs within some protected areas and recommends improved habitat protection and further surveys to clarify the full extent of the population. Given the narrow endemic range concentrated in the upper Wami drainage, any significant intensification of land use in Morogoro District has the potential to affect a substantial fraction of the global population. Monitoring of known pool localities and hydrological protection of the Mkata River floodplains are the most direct conservation actions available.
