Rachow's notho is among the most flamboyant of all freshwater fishes: a postage-stamp-sized annual killifish from the coastal floodplains of central Mozambique in which the male wears an astonishing mosaic of electric blue and vivid orange-red scales, often described as looking like a living stained-glass window. The species inhabits seasonal pools and floodplain pans that fill with the summer rains and dry completely within months, leaving no survivors above ground — yet the population persists because each pair buries clutches of diapausing eggs in the mud, where they survive the dry season and hatch when the rains return. In the killifish hobby Nothobranchius rachovii is considered a benchmark species: it crystallises everything that makes annual killies extraordinary, from the compressed lifespan and the peat-spawning husbandry to the almost implausible colouration of a fish that may never live beyond a single rainy season in the wild.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius rachovii was described in 1926 by the German ichthyologist Ernst Ahl, with material collected near Beira on the central Mozambican coast — a region of low-lying coastal plains drained by the Pungwe and Buzi river systems. The specific epithet honours Arthur Rachow (1884–1960), a Hamburg-based aquarist, fish trader, and naturalist who collected broadly across Africa and contributed numerous specimens to German museums in the early twentieth century. Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Nothobranchius rachovii Ahl, 1926.

The genus Nothobranchius Smith, 1849 belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae, the African annual killifishes, within the order Cyprinodontiformes. With more than 80 described species, it is the most species-rich genus of African annual killies and ranges across sub-Saharan Africa wherever seasonal savanna pools occur — from Senegal and Sudan south to KwaZulu-Natal. Nothobranchius rachovii sits within a clade of southern Mozambican species characterised by extreme male colour polymorphism and a distribution tightly tied to the coastal lowland drainages between the Save and Zambezi rivers.

Hobbyist strains are frequently labelled with a collection code indicating origin population — for example 'Beira 98' for material collected near Beira in 1998 — because colouration and spawning behaviour can differ subtly between populations. Maintaining strain provenance is considered good practice in killifish circles, both for the integrity of captive lines and for the species' potential conservation value.

Morphology

Nothobranchius rachovii is a small, laterally compressed fish. FishBase gives a maximum standard length of approximately 2–2.5 in, with most adult males reaching 2 in SL and females typically somewhat smaller and less deep-bodied. The body is fusiform in females and slightly deeper in males, with a rounded caudal fin that in males is adorned with vivid colour extending to the fin margins.

Male colouration is extraordinarily intense. The flanks carry a dense, fine-scale mosaic of iridescent steel-blue or turquoise scales interspersed with orange or orange-red scales, creating the stained-glass effect for which the species is renowned. The caudal fin is typically orange-red with a dark submarginal band and a pale or white outer margin, and the dorsal and anal fins carry blue and orange patterning. Colouration intensity is influenced by condition and social context: dominant males in peak form are among the most colourful freshwater fishes known. Females are cryptic by comparison — a muted brownish or olive-grey with fine dark speckling and little fin colouration, which minimises predation risk during the critical period of egg-laying in exposed substrate.

Sexual dimorphism is strong and immediately apparent: males are both more vividly coloured and somewhat larger on average, while females are rounder in the belly when gravid. In Seriously Fish's account, the coloration variation between geographic populations is sufficient that hobbyists tracking strain provenance can sometimes assign individuals to an approximate collection locality by colour pattern alone.

Habitat

Nothobranchius rachovii inhabits seasonal pools, flooded grass pans, and backwater depressions on the coastal lowlands of central Mozambique, primarily in the drainages of the Pungwe and Buzi rivers in the vicinity of Beira. These are true annual habitats: they fill during the wet season (roughly November to April in this part of southern Africa) and dry out completely during the prolonged dry season, leaving bare cracked mud. The fish's entire above-ground life cycle must be completed within the few months of inundation.

The water in these pools is warm and often turbid, with soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral chemistry reflecting the local geology and the decomposition of leaf litter and organic matter on the floodplain. Seriously Fish records an aquarium temperature range of 68–79 °F and pH 6.0–7.5 for wild-type conditions; water hardness is generally soft to moderately hard. The substrate in natural pools is a fine, dark, organically rich mud — important both as a foraging environment for invertebrates and as the spawning medium into which eggs are deposited.

The coastal floodplain setting means the habitat is low-lying, often seasonally flooded from river overflow as well as direct rainfall, and subject to periodic desiccation that is effectively total. No surface connection to permanent water bodies persists during the dry season. The species thus exists as a metapopulation of seasonally isolated habitat patches, with dispersal between patches occurring only during flood events when the plains are broadly inundated.

Feeding

In the wild, Nothobranchius rachovii is a micro-predator, feeding primarily on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, zooplankton, and worms — that proliferate rapidly in seasonal pools once rains fill them. The food-rich early wet season supports explosive population growth, and the fish is an opportunistic feeder that takes whatever appropriately sized prey is available. Gut content analyses of Nothobranchius species from East African pools confirm small chironomid larvae, ostracods, copepods, and amphipods as core prey items.

In captivity the species accepts live and frozen foods readily. Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), Grindal worms, micro-worms, and small white worms are all suitable and support full coloration development in males. Dried foods are accepted by many individuals once conditioned, but live and frozen foods produce the best growth and spawning condition. Because this is a short-lived species in which time to reproductive condition matters, feeding a varied and nutritious diet from the outset is more important than it is for longer-lived aquarium fish.

Mating

The mating system of Nothobranchius rachovii is polygynous and fast-paced, reflecting the severe time constraint imposed by an annual habitat that may be inundated for only a few months. Males compete vigorously for access to females, displaying to one another with flared fins and intensified colouration, and pursuing females persistently once the rainy-season pool is established and food density rises.

Courtship is direct and brief: the male positions himself alongside the female, and when she is receptive the pair move together to a patch of soft substrate — bare mud in the wild, peat or coir moss in the aquarium — where they press side by side, curl together, and drive headfirst into the mud in a brief spawning dive. One or a few eggs are deposited and fertilised with each dive; the pair surface and repeat the sequence multiple times in a single session. The eggs are left buried, with no parental attention, and the adults move on to further courtship and spawning events.

This substrate-diving mode is diagnostic of the annual Nothobranchius breeding strategy and should not be confused with the plant-spawning or bubble-nesting habits of other killifish groups. The urgency is real: wild fish in pools that may dry within weeks routinely spawn daily when conditions are favourable.

Breeding

The buried eggs of Nothobranchius rachovii are extraordinary objects: encased in a tough, adherent chorion and able to survive the complete desiccation of the surrounding mud through an arrested developmental state called diapause. Diapause in Nothobranchius can occur at multiple embryological stages, providing redundancy against premature wetting during brief unseasonal rains. When the pool refills with the following rains, the eggs hatch within days to a few weeks. Incubation period at room temperature in the hobby is typically 8–14 weeks in moist peat, with viability sometimes extending well beyond six months for well-stored clutches.

In the aquarium, breeding is straightforward once a pair is in good condition. A container of moist peat or coconut coir fibre 2–3 in deep is placed on the tank floor; the pair will spawn into it daily. After several weeks the medium is removed, lightly squeezed to remove excess water (leaving it damp, not wet), placed in a labelled sealable bag or container, and stored in a warm, dark location. When eggs are ready to hatch, the medium is flooded with soft, slightly acidic water — the temperature drop and chemical shift triggers mass hatching, often within 24–48 hours. Fry are large enough at hatching to take newly hatched Artemia nauplii immediately.

Growth is rapid: well-fed fry can reach sexual maturity in 6–8 weeks, which matches the compressed reproductive timeline of a fish whose wild lifespan is measured in months. Adults in captivity typically live 12–18 months under good conditions, occasionally longer — somewhat exceeding the wild lifespan, where surviving the dry season above ground is impossible.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius rachovii is one of the classic species of the killifish hobby and an excellent introduction to annual killi keeping. It is small, brilliantly coloured, and can be housed in a modest aquarium of 10–15 US gal, making it accessible even where space is limited. A species-only or single-species setup is preferred: males will fight persistently when confined in small quarters, and the female's camouflage colouration represents evolutionary protection against male harassment — she should have dense plantings, floating cover, and refuge areas to retreat to.

Water chemistry follows the habitat: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water at 72–79 °F is ideal. Seriously Fish recommends pH 6.0–7.5 and temperature in that range. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter is typically sufficient and avoids the risk of eggs being sucked into the intake. A spawning medium (dark, fine-grade peat or coir) is essential; without it the pair will attempt to spawn into the substrate or any soft material and egg survival is poor. Regular egg collection, dry storage, and scheduled re-wetting form the core of the husbandry cycle.

Because the fish is short-lived, the hobbyist's relationship with Nothobranchius rachovii is inherently cyclical: successive generations of fry replace ageing adults, and the skill lies in timing incubation, hatching, and rearing so that a new breeding cohort is ready before the current one declines. This rhythm — often described as the 'killi schedule' — is one of the features that makes annual killies especially engaging for dedicated hobbyists who enjoy the full arc of a fish's life rather than simple long-term maintenance.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List has not formally assessed Nothobranchius rachovii; the species is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE) in the current database. This absence of a formal assessment does not mean the species faces no pressure. Its range is tightly restricted to the coastal floodplains of central Mozambique — a landscape that has experienced significant modification through agricultural expansion, drainage of seasonal wetlands, and infrastructure development around the port city of Beira and its hinterland.

Seasonal pools and floodplain pans, the species' exclusive habitat, are among the freshwater environments most vulnerable to land-use change: they are typically shallow, small, isolated, and traditionally regarded as unproductive wastelands suitable for draining and conversion to cropland or pasture. The loss or degradation of individual pools can eliminate local populations permanently, since there is no permanent water refuge and recolonisation depends on flood connectivity with surviving pools. Climate variability — the timing and intensity of seasonal rains — adds further uncertainty for a species whose reproductive cycle is precisely calibrated to rainfall seasonality.

The killifish hobby maintains ex-situ populations of Nothobranchius rachovii through peat-egg exchange networks; these captive populations represent a meaningful genetic reservoir for locally threatened strains, though they cannot substitute for wild habitat protection. Formalising an IUCN assessment and mapping remaining habitat patches around the Pungwe–Buzi floodplain system would be a practical first step toward understanding the species' true conservation status.
