The striped notho is a small annual killifish endemic to the Wembere River system of central Tanzania, where it completes its entire life cycle in seasonal savanna pools that vanish each dry season. Its drought-resistant eggs are buried in vertisol clay mud and pass months in embryonic diapause before the return of the rains triggers hatching — a survival strategy as ancient as it is elegant. Assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, Nothobranchius taeniopygus occupies a severely restricted range of fewer than 2,0 mi² and faces mounting pressure from agricultural conversion of the ephemeral wetlands it depends on.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius taeniopygus was described by the German zoologist Franz Hilgendorf in 1891, with the type locality given as Lake Chaya (Tschaia-See) in central Tanzania, approximately 05°35′S, 34°04′E. The name rests on a neotype — ZMB 31905, a male of 1.5 in SL collected from residual pools of Kaputa Creek in savanna bush 3 mi east of the Kazi Kazi railway station (05°37′S, 34°04′E) at an elevation of 1,273–1,1240 ft — designated by Wildekamp (1990). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Nothobranchius taeniopygus Hilgendorf, 1891.

The species belongs to the subgenus Zononothobranchius and gives its name to the N. taeniopygus species group. Molecular and morphological revisions by Watters et al. (2019) split several previously synonymised populations into distinct species — N. angelae, N. ottoschmidti, N. rungwaensis, N. skeltoni, and N. sonjae — leaving N. taeniopygus sensu stricto as the name-bearing taxon confined to the Wembere drainage. At the type-locality site, it is syntopic with Nothobranchius torgashevi, the two species co-occurring in roughly equal proportions.

Morphology

Nothobranchius taeniopygus is a small, laterally compressed killifish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for males and 1 in for females; a larger male of 1.5 in SL is documented by Wildekamp (1990), and the WildNothos database notes a neotype male of 1.5 in SL. Males are the more colourful sex: the body is light blue with warm red-brown scale margins that produce a reticulated or scaly-net pattern. The anal and caudal fins display pale, banded patterning with a distinctive black distal margin — the striping of the posterior fins that gives the species its name. The dorsal fin is similarly marked.

Females are cryptic and lack both the blue body colouration and the fin markings; they are plain brownish-olive, a typical pattern in the genus that reduces predation risk on egg-laying fish in open substrate. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and evident even in juveniles within a few weeks of hatching. The diploid chromosome number has been determined as 2n = 36 with a nombre fondamental of NF = 66.

Habitat

Nothobranchius taeniopygus is found exclusively in the Kapatu Creek drainage within the broader Wembere River system of central Tanzania, to the west and southwest of Itigi. The species inhabits ephemeral water bodies — temporary shallow pools, marshes, and seasonal pans — embedded in the acacia-dominated miombo savanna at elevations of roughly 1,200–1,1312 ft. These pools form during the wet season (roughly November to April) and contract or disappear entirely during the long dry season.

Water chemistry at the neotype site is slightly alkaline and moderately mineralised: temperature 63 °F, pH 8.2, conductivity 210 µS/cm. FishBase records a broader husbandry temperature range of 64–75 °F and pH around 8.2 with moderate hardness (dH 6+), reflecting the seasonal fluctuation of shallow savanna pools. The substrate is characterised as vertisol-type clay — dense, swelling clays that swell when wet and crack deeply when dry — into which the fish deposit their eggs. This substrate interaction is central to the species' survival strategy: the eggs are physically protected within the cracking clay matrix during the dry season.

Feeding

Like other members of the genus, Nothobranchius taeniopygus is a generalist carnivore in the wild, feeding on invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton — that develop rapidly in the seasonally flooded pools alongside the fish. The short productive season selects for opportunistic, rapid feeding to accumulate energy for growth and reproduction before the habitat dries.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm, Tubifex, and micro-worms are all appropriate. High-quality small dried or granulated foods are generally accepted once the fish are settled. Overfeeding with rich live foods can shorten lifespan in animals already programmed for a compressed life cycle; offering moderate, varied meals produces the best long-term condition.

Mating

Nothobranchius taeniopygus is a soil-spawning annual killifish. The mating system follows the pattern typical of the genus: males compete vigorously for access to females, displaying their brilliant blue and red colouration and patterned fins to rivals and prospective mates. Aggressive interactions between males are common and intense when fish are kept in groups, and dominant males may suppress subordinate males through persistent harassment.

Courtship is rapid and direct. The male approaches the female, orients alongside her, and drives her toward the substrate. Spawning embrace occurs with the pair side by side, the male pressing the female into the soft mud or peat in a brief convulsive clasp during which one or a few eggs are driven into the substrate. The pair then separate and may spawn repeatedly over the course of hours or days. This substrate-insertion behaviour physically buries the eggs — it is not merely deposition on the surface — and the eggs are left entirely without parental attendance from the moment of spawning.

Breeding

The eggs of Nothobranchius taeniopygus enter embryonic diapause immediately upon burial and remain in arrested development for the duration of the dry season. In the wild this diapause lasts as long as the pool remains dry; in captivity, hobbyists store the peat or coir spawning medium in sealed bags at room temperature for three to five months before re-wetting, at which point larvae hatch within hours to days of the medium being flooded. The IUCN assessment notes the ecological significance of this strategy: the eggs are the only life-stage able to survive the annual desiccation, and any catastrophic event during the brief adult breeding season can eliminate an entire local year-class.

FishBase records an incubation period of three to six months at room temperature under captive conditions. Young fish reach sexual maturity in approximately six to seven weeks after hatching — a remarkably fast developmental rate driven by the evolutionary pressure to reproduce before the next dry season arrives. Wild fish commonly complete their entire lives within a single wet season; captive animals may survive somewhat longer with stable conditions, but lifespan rarely exceeds twelve to eighteen months. Clutch size per spawning bout is small (one to a few eggs per embrace), but pairs spawn continuously over an extended period.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius taeniopygus is a specialist fish suited to experienced killifish keepers rather than general community aquarium setups. Its care requirements are dictated by its annual lifestyle: the central task is not tank decoration but managing the peat- or coir-spawning medium, collecting and drying it, and timing the re-wetting to produce successful hatches. A small, heavily planted or moss-covered spawning tank with a layer of soft peat or coconut fibre on the substrate is the standard approach; the male and female are introduced, fed well, and left to spawn for several weeks before the medium is removed, lightly squeezed, sealed in a labelled plastic bag, and stored for three to five months.

Water temperature should be maintained in the 68–75 °F range; the species is not suited to the warm temperatures often used for tropical community fish. Water chemistry in the 7.5–8.5 pH range with moderate hardness mirrors the slightly alkaline savanna pools of the native habitat. Males are aggressive toward one another and should be housed one per tank unless the setup is spacious; a ratio of one male to two or three females helps distribute male attention. The fish are small and delicate — tankmates, if any, should be similarly sized, peaceful species that will not compete for substrate access. The brilliant male colouration makes N. taeniopygus a rewarding subject for specialist keepers willing to invest in the peat-management workflow.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessment of 2 September 2019 (published 2020) places Nothobranchius taeniopygus in the Vulnerable (VU) category under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii). The extent of occurrence is estimated at a maximum of 2,0 mi², and the area of occupancy at less than 311 mi². The species is known from only two threat-defined locations, with an estimated maximum of ten; it is not known to occur within any formally protected conservation area. The primary driver of decline is the conversion of its ephemeral wetland habitat to irrigated rice cultivation and the broader agricultural degradation of the Wembere basin. Population trends are unknown.

The species' biology makes it acutely sensitive to habitat modification. The vertisol clay pools it inhabits are shallow, isolated, and hydrologically fragile — drainage for rice paddies can permanently alter the flood-and-dry cycle that the eggs require. Because the adult stage is short-lived and the eggs are the only persistent life stage, a single season of failed flooding can locally extirpate a population. The very restricted range means there are no refugial populations capable of recolonising lost sites. FishBase records introductions of N. taeniopygus to Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia for mosquito-control purposes; the ecological consequences of these introductions for native fauna are not well documented. Given the species' restricted endemic range and the intensifying agricultural pressure in central Tanzania, continued monitoring of known localities and protection of at least some pools within the Kapatu Creek drainage are conservation priorities.
