Papiliolebias bitteri was originally described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1990 under the name Plesiolebias bitteri, with the type locality recorded as Paraguay — an origin reflecting aquarium-imported material rather than a precisely documented field collection. The authority is shown in parentheses because the species has since been moved from the genus in which it was first described. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the valid name as Papiliolebias bitteri (Costa, 1990), placing it in the genus Papiliolebias within the family Rivulidae (South American annual killifishes).
The genus Papiliolebias is a small Neotropical genus of annual killifishes confined to the seasonal pool habitats of interior South America — the Chaco lowlands and adjacent drainages shared among Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. The British Killifish Association notes that the species was for some time maintained in Plesiolebias before subsequent revisions elevated Papiliolebias as a distinct genus. Found syntopically in the same seasonal pool systems are other annual genera including Austrolebias and Trigonectes, reflecting the high diversity of annual killifishes in this biogeographic zone.
Morphology
Papiliolebias bitteri is a slender, laterally compressed killifish with a maximum recorded size of 2 in total length (FishBase). This compact body plan is typical of annual rivulids adapted to shallow, temporary pool environments where growth is rapid and the adult phase is brief.
As in most annual killifishes with pronounced sexual dimorphism, males are more vividly patterned than females. Males exhibit the jewel-like iridescent barring and patterning characteristic of the Papiliolebias genus, while females are cryptically marked and smaller-bodied. The fins in males are often pigmented and elaborated relative to females, a pattern common across annual South American killifishes where male display plays a role in mate choice.
Habitat
Papiliolebias bitteri inhabits seasonal pools in the Paraguay River basin, occurring across parts of Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay (American Killifish Association). These pools form during the annual wet season when rains flood the low-lying Chaco and adjacent grassland depressions, creating shallow, warm, temporary water bodies that persist for weeks to a few months before evaporating entirely during the dry season.
The pools occupied by this species are typically shallow, with soft mud or peat substrates rich in organic detritus — the medium into which adults spawn and in which eggs survive the dry season in diapause. Water chemistry records from FishBase list conditions around pH 7 and a temperature of approximately 75–82 °F, consistent with the warm, near-neutral to slightly acidic character of Chaco seasonal pools. Feeding
In the wild, Papiliolebias bitteri is presumed to be a generalist micropredator, taking the small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — that colonise seasonal pools rapidly after they fill. This is the diet typical of small annual killifishes: they hatch into a food-rich environment immediately after the first rains, and fast, opportunistic feeding drives the rapid growth needed to reach sexual maturity before the pool dries.
In the aquarium, the species responds well to small live and frozen invertebrates: Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, Cyclops, and chironomid larvae (bloodworm) form a natural and nutritious diet. Dry foods are accepted by some individuals once settled but should not form the bulk of the ration; a diet centred on high-quality live or frozen invertebrates supports breeding condition and vivid colouration.
Mating
Papiliolebias bitteri is a substrate-spawning annual killifish. Males court females with lateral display, spreading the fins and presenting the flank patterning to the female. When receptive, the female joins the male and the pair move to the substrate together. This is not a plant-spawner — spawning takes place through diving into and within the soft mud or peat substrate of the pool floor, where eggs are deposited and fertilised in the medium itself.
The courtship and spawning behaviour reflect the ecology of temporary pools: the entire breeding season is compressed into the weeks when pools hold water, and males compete intensively for access to females. Multiple spawning dives occur across the available breeding period, distributing eggs through the substrate rather than in a single event.
Breeding
As a true annual killifish, the reproductive biology of Papiliolebias bitteri revolves entirely around diapausing eggs buried in the substrate. After the pair dive into the substrate and the female deposits eggs, those eggs enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development that allows them to survive the complete desiccation of the pool through the dry season. When the rains return and the pool refills, the eggs resume development and hatch within days to weeks.
The American Killifish Association notes a roughly three-month lifecycle for this species, meaning that from hatching to sexual maturity can take only weeks — among the fastest life histories of any vertebrate. Wild adults typically do not survive the dry season; the egg buried in the substrate is the sole continuity of the population from one year to the next.
In the aquarium, this annual cycle is replicated by spawning the fish on a peat or coconut coir substrate, which is then collected, gently squeezed to remove excess moisture, stored in a sealed bag at room temperature for an appropriate diapause period (typically six to twelve weeks for this species, though exact timing should be adjusted to observed development), and then re-wetted with slightly cooled, conditioned water to trigger hatching. A species-only setup is strongly recommended — a small, covered aquarium of 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a breeding pair or small group, with a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape. The substrate should be kept shallow; providing a separate peat spawning container or a tray of moistened peat or coir at the base of the tank gives the fish a dedicated spawning medium and allows regular egg collection.
Water conditions should replicate the warm, near-neutral seasonal pools of the Chaco: temperature 75–82 °F, pH around 7, and moderate hardness. Regular partial water changes with aged or conditioned water maintain water quality in the confined setup. Because these fish are short-lived by nature, acquiring or producing young fish from diapause eggs each season is integral to keeping the species in the collection.
