Taxonomy & naming
Stenolebias bellus was originally described by George S. Myers in 1942. The current valid combination is Stenolebias bellus (Myers, 1942) as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), the governing authority for valid names. The parenthetical placement of the authority reflects a subsequent generic reassignment; the species has at times been placed under other genera before settling in Stenolebias.
The genus Stenolebias belongs to the subfamily Rivulinae within Rivulidae, the South American aplocheiloid killifish family. Rivulinae encompasses roughly seventeen genera of obligate annual killifish in the Neotropics, including Aphyolebias, Austrofundulus, Gnatholebias, and Llanolebias — all characterised by the capacity to survive seasonal habitat desiccation through diapausing eggs buried in the substrate. Stenolebias is a small, morphologically compact genus within that assemblage.
The specific epithet bellus is Latin for 'beautiful' or 'handsome', a common epithet in the killifish literature applied to species whose males display vivid breeding colouration.
Morphology
Stenolebias bellus is a diminutive fish, reaching a documented maximum of 1 in standard length (FishBase). Like other rivuline annual killies, the body plan is compact and laterally compressed, with a terminal or slightly superior mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding. The fins are rounded and the dorsal fin is positioned far back on the body — a placement typical of substrate-diving spawners in this subfamily, whose body profile is adapted for plunging into soft sediment.
Males display the sexually dichromatic colouration characteristic of their genus and family: breeding colouration involves contrasting lateral patterns that give the species its epithet. Females are, as in the great majority of rivuline killifish, cryptically coloured — plainer, brownish, and more robust in the belly when carrying eggs. Sexual dimorphism in colouration is one of the most consistent characters in the group and the primary field distinction between the sexes.
Habitat
Stenolebias bellus is recorded from the Paraguay River basin of South America, with the American Killifish Association noting the locality of Miranda, Mato Grosso, Brazil. This region lies within the Pantanal watershed — one of the world's largest tropical wetland systems — where seasonal flooding creates extensive temporary pools and marginal depressions that fill during the wet season and evaporate completely in the dry months.
The species inhabits these ephemeral seasonal pools: shallow, warm, richly vegetated bodies of water over soft substrate (peat, mud, and accumulated organic detritus) where the annual killies of the Chaco and Pantanal margin complete their compressed life cycles. FishBase records the habitat type as tropical freshwater, benthopelagic, non-migratory. Water chemistry in the Pantanal pools varies by season and location, and precise records for Stenolebias bellus localities are not available in the published literature.
Feeding
Like other small annual killifish of the Rivulinae, Stenolebias bellus is understood to be a micro-predator and opportunistic omnivore in the wild, subsisting on invertebrates — small aquatic insects, zooplankton, and similar small-bodied prey — that are abundant in the productive seasonal pools of the Pantanal region during the wet season. Given the short, compressed life cycle common to all annual killifish, feeding rates and growth in the wild are rapid: individuals must reach sexual maturity and spawn before their pool desiccates.
In captivity, South American annual killifish of this size class are typically offered live and frozen small foods: Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, Cyclops, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and small fruit flies (Drosophila). These foods support the fast growth and conditioning of adults for breeding. Dry and prepared foods may be accepted but are generally supplementary.
Mating
Stenolebias bellus reproduces by the annual killifish method: pair-bonded or briefly courting males and females spawn together by submerging completely into the soft substrate of their pool, a behaviour killifish keepers term 'deep diving'. The male courts the female with lateral displays and fin-spreading, then the pair together dive into the peat or mud and deposit one or a small clutch of eggs well below the substrate surface before surfacing. This is repeated many times over the breeding season.
The deep-dive spawning mode, shared with other South American annual killifish (and distinct from the shallow 'ploughing' method of African Nothobranchius), places eggs at a depth where soil moisture is retained longest during the dry season. This provides the eggs maximum buffering from the desiccation cycles occurring at the substrate surface. The breeding period in the wild coincides with the productive wet season, giving the resulting fry the full wet-season duration in which to grow and themselves reach reproductive age.
Breeding
The eggs of Stenolebias bellus are deposited in the substrate and immediately enter the diapausing phase of annual killifish development. Diapause is a genetically programmed state of arrested embryonic development in which metabolic rate drops dramatically, allowing eggs to remain viable through the months of complete pool desiccation that characterise their native habitat. The eggs pass through sequential diapause phases, the timing and depth of which varies among species and populations. When rains return and the pool refills, contact with water (and associated temperature and light cues) breaks diapause and triggers hatching.
In captivity the hobby has developed a reliable husbandry protocol for South American annual killifish: the spawning medium — peat moss, coir fibre, or finely sifted natural substrate — is removed from the tank, gently squeezed of excess water, placed in a sealed container or plastic bag, and stored at room temperature for a species-appropriate diapause period (typically six weeks to several months). The container is then re-wetted with cool, soft, aged water; fry begin hatching within hours to days. Fry are tiny at hatching but grow rapidly and can be raised on Artemia nauplii from the first day. Adult annual killifish are short-lived; wild fish rarely survive more than one season, and captive specimens may live somewhat longer under optimal conditions but are still fundamentally short-lived.
In the aquarium
Stenolebias bellus is a specialist species suited to experienced killifish keepers rather than general community aquarium hobbyists. Its small size (maximum 1 in SL) means it can be housed in modest aquaria — a shallow tank of 5.5–10 US gal is appropriate for a breeding pair or small group — but the specialist requirements of annual killifish husbandry, particularly the peat-storage diapause cycle for eggs, require understanding and commitment.
The aquarium should be furnished with a deep layer of soft spawning medium covering at least part of the base — fine peat moss or coir is standard — as without appropriate substrate the fish cannot exhibit their natural spawning behaviour. Floating plants and gentle, low-flow filtration reflect the calm, productive seasonal pools the species inhabits in nature. Water should be soft and slightly acid, warm (75–82 °F), with subdued lighting. Males may be territorial with one another; a single male with one or two females or a small group with adequate space is the standard approach.
Stenolebias bellus is rarely encountered in the mainstream ornamental trade. It is maintained by specialist killifish societies and breeders, particularly through the American Killifish Association (AKA) and its affiliated clubs, where egg lots are traded and distributed among enthusiasts. Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Stenolebias bellus as Data Deficient (DD) in 2021, the assessment carried out by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio, Brazil). The DD designation reflects genuine absence of sufficient data to evaluate the species' population size, trend, or range rather than an inference of security: for a small, endemic annual killifish confined to seasonal pools in a specific river basin, Data Deficient must be read cautiously.
The Paraguay River basin and Pantanal margin are subject to ongoing pressures: agricultural expansion across the Cerrado and Chaco biomes continues to reduce and degrade the seasonal wetland habitats on which obligate pool-dwelling annual killifish depend. Drainage for cattle ranching and crop irrigation, road construction fragmenting wetland connectivity, and the introduction of non-native fishes have all been documented as threats to endemic seasonal-pool fauna across lowland South America. Annual killifish are particularly vulnerable because their entire life cycle is confined to small, isolated, ephemeral water bodies — habitat loss at a single locality can represent the extinction of a local population or an entire species.
Research on the species is sparse, and targeted surveys of Stenolebias bellus localities in Mato Grosso and the wider Paraguay basin would be needed to establish whether populations remain stable and what conservation measures, if any, are warranted. Until such data exist, the DD status honestly reflects what is and is not known.
