Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus cari was formally described by Lustosa-Costa, Ramos, Zawadzki, Jacobina and Lima in 2024, published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society (volume 201, number 3, article zlae059). The holotype measures 5 in standard length and was collected from the Parnaíba River, municipality of Alto Parnaíba, state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil. The species is placed within the Hypostomus pusarum species complex, and molecular clock analysis reported in the description paper estimates divergence from H. pusarum at approximately 2.8 million years ago — placing the split in the Pliocene. The species is assigned to subfamily Hypostominae of family Loricariidae.
As a species described in 2024, H. cari is not yet indexed in the public version of FishBase and has not received a formal IUCN Red List assessment. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name and authorship cited here.
Morphology
The holotype of H. cari is 5 in standard length, suggesting a modest adult size within the genus — estimated at roughly 6.5 in total length. Like all loricariids, the body is encased in rows of overlapping bony scutes. The colour pattern is described as dark spots on a lighter background, consistent with the broader H. pusarum complex.
The species is distinguished from other members of the pusarum group by two diagnostic morphological features: the absence of a developed medial buccal papilla — a soft protrusion on the floor of the mouth present in related species — combined with the presence of a pre-anal plate. This combination of one absent structure and one present structure is sufficient to separate H. cari from its congeners when examined alongside meristic and molecular data.
Habitat
Hypostomus cari is known from the Parnaíba River drainage, northeastern Brazil, assigned to the Parnaíba freshwater ecoregion (FEOW 318). The Parnaíba is one of the major river systems of northeastern Brazil, draining a largely semi-arid to sub-humid Cerrado landscape before reaching the Atlantic coast at the Maranhão-Piauí border. The river is notable for its length and for traversing a region of pronounced seasonal rainfall variability, alternating between wet-season flood pulses and extended dry periods.
Water chemistry in the Parnaíba drainage is variable by season: typically soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral (pH approximately 6.5–7.5), with temperatures of 75–86 °F reflecting the hot, semi-arid climate of the interior. No site-specific water-chemistry data were published in the species description.
Feeding
No dietary study specific to H. cari has been published. Membership in the Hypostomus pusarum complex, a group of predominantly herbivorous to omnivorous benthic scrapers, suggests that periphyton grazing forms the dietary core — algal biofilm, diatoms, and fine detritus rasped from submerged hard substrates such as rocks and woody debris. The Parnaíba River, with its seasonal flood pulse, alternately exposes and submerges large areas of substrate, potentially creating boom-bust cycles of periphyton availability that riverine Hypostomus are well adapted to exploit.
Mating
No observations of courtship behaviour specific to H. cari have been published. Reproductive biology in the Hypostomus pusarum complex follows the general Hypostomus pattern: males are presumed to defend rock cavities or crevices against rival males and attract females to spawn within the defended site. Whether the seasonal flood pulse of the Parnaíba triggers spawning — as it does in many tropical freshwater fishes — is not known for this species.
Breeding
No breeding data specific to H. cari have been published. Genus-level biology indicates that Hypostomus species are cave spawners with paternal brood care: the male guards adhesive eggs deposited by the female on the interior walls of a rock crevice or similar cavity, fanning the clutch to oxygenate the eggs and removing infertile individuals until hatching. Whether H. cari has been maintained in captivity at all is unknown; it is not present in the ornamental trade.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus cari is not present in the aquarium trade and is known only from the scientific type collection. At a holotype size of 5 in standard length — roughly 6.5 in total length — adults would be manageable in size compared with the largest Hypostomus, but the species' recent description, restricted range, and complete absence from trade mean no husbandry data are available. The semi-arid Parnaíba drainage is not a well-travelled aquarium-collecting region.
Conservation
Hypostomus cari has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; described in 2024, it is too recently named to have entered the formal assessment cycle. Its range is confined to the Parnaíba River drainage — a large system but one subject to significant and intensifying anthropogenic pressures.
The Parnaíba basin supports a hydroelectric cascade that alters flow regimes, sediment transport, and thermal conditions in the main channel — all factors relevant to benthic loricariids dependent on stable rocky substrate and oxygenated current. Agricultural irrigation withdrawals, particularly for soya and rice cultivation expanding in the upper basin, compound hydrological modification. These pressures affect the broader fish community of the Parnaíba, and the long-term trajectory for a recently described, range-restricted species like H. cari warrants monitoring once an IUCN assessment is undertaken.
