Taxonomy & naming
Plataplochilus ngaensis was described by Ernst Ahl in 1924, with the type locality recorded as Attogondema on the Nga River, German Cameroon. Subsequent boundary changes and geographic revision place this type locality in modern northern Gabon near the border with Equatorial Guinea, in the drainage of the Noya River, a tributary of the Ogowe system. The authority is presented in parentheses because the species has been moved from the genus in which Ahl originally placed it to Plataplochilus, which Ahl himself erected in 1928 to accommodate this and related West-Central African lampeyes.
The genus Plataplochilus currently comprises around nine species distributed across the coastal lowlands and forest drainages of West and Central Africa. It belongs to the family Procatopodidae, the African lampeye killifishes, which are distinguished from the better-known South American and West African annual killifishes by their non-annual life history and by the iridescent light-organ patch above the eye — the feature that gives the group its common name. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) is the authority for the valid name Plataplochilus ngaensis (Ahl, 1924) used here.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum of 2 in total length. The body is moderately deep — killifische.info records body depth at 28.4–31.5% of standard length — giving the fish a somewhat stocky, rounded silhouette compared with many of the slender annual killifishes. Males carry the iridescent silvery-blue sheen on the lower flank that characterises the lampeye group, and the light-organ patch above the pupil catches available light and glows with a blue-green luminescence in the right viewing angle. The fins are relatively plain; males may show slightly more colourful finnage than females.
Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle: females are somewhat fuller-bodied when gravid, and males typically display brighter flank iridescence and the more prominent supraocular light patch. The species is not among the more spectacularly coloured killifishes — its appeal lies in the collective shimmer of a well-lit school rather than in individual male display.
Habitat
The species is known from small streams, forest brooks, and swamps in the lower Ogowe River drainage of Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The Ogowe (Ogooué) is one of the major river systems of Gabon, draining a large tract of lowland tropical rainforest before emptying into the Atlantic at Port-Gentil. P. ngaensis occupies peripheral, often shaded waterbodies within this system — the kind of clear, slow-moving or still forest water with abundant submerged vegetation, leaf litter, and overhanging riparian growth that characterises the lowland procatopodid niche.
Water parameters recorded for this habitat fall in the range of 68–79 °F, with a pH of 6.5–7.2 — moderately soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral conditions that reflect the influence of surrounding rainforest soils rather than the more extreme acidity of true blackwater streams. Unlike many annual killifishes from the West African savanna zone, P. ngaensis inhabits permanent water that persists through the dry season, which shapes both its reproductive strategy and its aquarium requirements.
Feeding
In the wild, lampeyes of the Procatopodidae are understood to feed primarily on small invertebrates — zooplankton, insect larvae, and other aquatic microinvertebrates — taken from the water column and from the surface film. The permanent-water, schooling lifestyle of P. ngaensis is consistent with a diet focused on planktonic prey and small insects.
In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen foods without difficulty. Small live foods such as daphnia, cyclops, artemia nauplii, and bloodworm are relished and support good condition and colour. Dry foods in appropriately small sizes can also be accepted. Variety in the diet and the provision of live or frozen invertebrates is particularly important when conditioning fish for spawning.
Mating
Plataplochilus ngaensis is a non-annual, continuous spawner — a reproductive strategy common to the Procatopodidae and fundamentally different from the seasonal annual killifishes. Rather than concentrating all reproductive effort into a short burst before ephemeral water dries, P. ngaensis pairs or small groups spawn repeatedly over an extended period, depositing a few adhesive eggs at each encounter.
The species is reported to be a schooling fish whose mating behaviour is strongly influenced by group dynamics. Aquarists note that fish kept in isolation as pairs rarely perform well, while groups — including the presence of congeners such as Procatopus — spawn more readily and more productively. This suggests that social stimulation, likely including visual cues from conspecifics and closely related species, plays a role in reproductive motivation. Males court females with lateral displays that highlight the iridescent flank and supraocular light patch.
Breeding
Eggs are adhesive and are deposited among fine-leaved plants and submerged mops, which the fish prefer to encounter at the bottom of the aquarium. Spawning mops positioned near the substrate are reported to be more productive than surface mops, consistent with the species' apparent preference for shallow, vegetated water edges where it would naturally deposit eggs among roots and leaf litter.
Fry are slow-growing, and the species overall is rated as moderately difficult to breed — technically achievable in a well-managed school setup but not as immediately productive as many more popular killifishes. Incubation time and fry size are typical for small procatopodids; very fine first foods (infusoria, commercial fry powder) are needed before progression to newly hatched artemia nauplii. Maintaining stable, cool temperatures in the lower part of the 68–73 °F range and soft, slightly acidic water quality assists both spawning frequency and fry survival.
In the aquarium
FishBase rates P. ngaensis as very difficult to maintain, and the hobbyist consensus echoes this — the species demands attentive husbandry, particularly regarding temperature stability. The preferred range of 68–73 °F is cooler than many aquarium fish require, and summer ambient temperatures in uncontrolled fish rooms can push water above the comfortable range for this forest-stream species. Adequate cooling or an air-conditioned room is a practical requirement in warmer climates.
The species does best in a species aquarium or with peaceful, similarly sized Procatopodidae companions. A well-planted tank with subdued lighting, gentle filtration, and soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water (pH 6.5–7.2) replicates the forest-brook conditions of the home range. Schooling behaviour is an important part of the fish's biology; a group of at least six to eight individuals is recommended both for the fishes' welfare and for successful spawning. Bottom mops of dark wool or fine plants provide spawning sites. Regular small water changes and careful attention to temperature are the keys to long-term success with this species.
Conservation
No formal IUCN Red List assessment specific to Plataplochilus ngaensis has been completed; FishBase records the species as Least Concern based on its occurrence across the lower Ogowe drainage, a large river system in Gabon that retains substantial forest cover compared with many West African river basins. However, the Ogowe drainage faces increasing pressure from logging, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, and small-stream species with restricted ranges — like the forest lampeyes — are inherently vulnerable to local habitat alteration even if they are not immediately threatened at the range-wide scale.
The species' requirement for clear, cool, well-oxygenated forest streams means that deforestation and the associated sedimentation and warming of watercourses represent the primary threat. A formal assessment of the species, informed by precise locality data and population surveys, would be a valuable contribution to understanding the conservation status of Gabon's poorly studied killifish fauna.
