Plataplochilus chalcopyrus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1927. The genus Plataplochilus belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae (African killifishes) and is placed within the lampeye assemblage — a group of small, non-annual, schooling killifishes distributed across the rivers and swampy margins of West and Central Africa. The authority is given in parentheses as (Pellegrin, 1927) under the convention indicating the species has been reassigned since its original description. Feeding

Breeding
In the aquarium, P. chalcopyrus spawns among fine-leaved plants, floating plants with trailing roots, or spawning mops of wool or synthetic fibre — any substrate that offers fibrous attachment points for adhesive eggs. Adults will spawn repeatedly if kept in good condition, and because they are continuous spawners, eggs can be collected over extended periods rather than in a single event.
Incubation takes approximately 10–14 days depending on water temperature, consistent with the typical lampeye range documented in the hobby. Newly hatched fry are small but free-swimming and immediately able to hunt appropriately sized prey; infusoria, newly hatched artemia nauplii, or commercial fry foods in appropriate grades are suitable first foods. The flame lampeye is a specialist's fish rather than a mainstream aquarium subject, and is encountered primarily through killifish society networks and specialist breeders. Its requirements are consistent with other Plataplochilus lampeyes: a small, well-planted aquarium of 10 US gal or more, with gentle filtration providing good oxygenation without excessive current, a tight-fitting lid (killifishes are capable jumpers), and subdued lighting that suits the shaded forest-stream conditions of the native habitat. Water conditions should target the parameters of the Ogooué drainage — soft to moderately soft, mildly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.2), temperature 68–79 °F.
Plataplochilus chalcopyrus is a shoaling species and is best kept in groups of six or more, which produces natural schooling behaviour and encourages the eye-spot display that makes the group visually appealing. It is peaceful and should not be housed with larger or more aggressive fish. Tankmates of comparable size and temperament — other small West African species from similar water conditions — can work well. Plenty of fine-leaved planting or floating vegetation and spawning mops will encourage natural behaviour and allow for easy egg collection.
The species is not widely available in the general trade and may require sourcing through killifish associations such as the American Killifish Association or its European equivalents, where breeders maintain stocks of rarer West African lampeyes and can provide accurate locality data and husbandry guidance.

The Ogooué Delta KBA spans low-elevation deltaic and coastal freshwater habitats in Gabon, a country whose forests and river systems remain comparatively intact relative to much of West Africa but face growing pressure from oil extraction, logging concessions, and expanding infrastructure. The restricted endemic range of P. chalcopyrus — limited to the Ogooué drainage — means that any significant degradation of that watershed, particularly its deltaic fringe, carries disproportionate risk for the species. Freshwater threats common to the region include sedimentation from land clearing, agricultural run-off, and the broader pressure of climate-driven hydrological change on low-gradient coastal drainages.
