Taxonomy & naming
Plataplochilus cabindae was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911, with type material collected from the Cabinda territory — the Angolan exclave on the Atlantic coast north of the Congo River mouth — which gives the species its epithet. The authority is written in parentheses in the standard Linnaean convention because the species has been moved from the genus under which Boulenger originally placed it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Plataplochilus cabindae (Boulenger, 1911), placing it in the genus Plataplochilus within the family Procatopodidae.
Procatopodidae — the African lampeyes — are a family of small, schooling, non-annual killifishes restricted to sub-Saharan Africa. They are distinguished from the annual killifishes (Nothobranchiidae, Aplocheilidae) by their permanent-water lifestyle, adhesive plant-spawning reproductive strategy, and absence of embryonic diapause. The genus Plataplochilus is one of the medium-sized genera in the family, largely centred on Atlantic-draining river systems of west-central Africa.
No subspecies of P. cabindae are currently recognised, and no aquarium strains have been formally described. Because the species occupies a narrow, geographically coherent range across three contiguous drainage systems, population-level taxonomic structure has not been formally investigated.
Morphology
Plataplochilus cabindae is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2 in (FishBase). The body shape is typical of lampeyes: an elongate, somewhat cylindrical form that facilitates schooling in open water near the surface or among fine vegetation. The dorsal fin is set well back, giving the fish a streamlined silhouette.
The defining visual character of the lampeye group is the iridescent blue-green reflective patch on the upper margin of the iris — a structural-colour organ that produces a striking metallic gleam when light catches it at the right angle. In a school, these eye-spots create a flickering constellation of blue-green points that is thought to serve a social cohesion function, helping individuals track the school in filtered forest light. The body colouration in P. cabindae is typical of the genus: a pale to yellowish-silver base with subtle iridescence on the flanks and fin margins that varies with lighting angle.
Sexual dimorphism is present but moderate. Males are more intensely coloured, with brighter fin pigmentation and more vivid body iridescence; females are plainer and become visibly fuller-bodied when carrying eggs. The difference is clearest in good lighting or when comparing conditioned adults side by side.
Habitat
FishBase records the native distribution of Plataplochilus cabindae as the Louilou and Loémé river drainage systems in the Republic of Congo, the Chiloango system centred on the Cabinda enclave and western Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Lombo tributary in Gabon. This is a compact Atlantic-draining coastal band just north of the Congo River mouth, encompassing lowland river systems that traverse the transition zone between the southern Guinean forests and the Congo Basin margin.
Within these drainages the species is described as benthopelagic in small rivers, brooks, and swampy habitats — meaning it occupies the lower to mid water column in shallow, often heavily vegetated settings. Water chemistry in this region is typically mildly acidic to neutral: FishBase gives a pH range of 6.5–7.2 and a temperature range of 72–75 °F, consistent with the warm, moderately soft freshwater typical of coastal Atlantic-draining rivers in this part of central Africa. These are permanent-water habitats — the Louilou, Loémé, Chiloango, and Lombo systems maintain perennial flow — reflecting the non-annual life history of the species.
Feeding
Plataplochilus cabindae, like most procatopodid lampeyes, is a microinvertebrate feeder in nature. In its preferred shallow, vegetated stream and swamp habitats it forages on zooplankton, small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and other small organisms associated with the water surface and the vegetation mat. The small mouth and slender body are adapted to this picking, schooling foraging style rather than pursuit predation.
In captivity the species accepts most small prepared and live foods. Micro-pellets, daphnia, artemia nauplii, cyclops, and finely chopped bloodworm or tubifex all provide appropriate nutrition. Because the fish is small (max 2 in) and a surface-to-mid-water feeder, food particles should be sized accordingly; large pellets or sinking foods are likely to be ignored. Regular feeding with varied foods supports condition and the vibrant colouration that makes lampeyes attractive in a well-lit display aquarium.
Mating
Plataplochilus cabindae is a non-annual killifish and a continuous, plant-spawning egg-layer — a reproductive strategy fundamentally different from the annual, soil-spawning killifishes with which killifish are often associated in the hobby. There is no diapause, no dormant egg phase, and no annual drying of habitat. Instead, conditioned adults in permanent water bodies spawn repeatedly over an extended period, depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs at each spawning event.
Spawning behaviour in lampeyes of this type is characterised by brief, repeated pairing events in which male and female swim in close proximity, often among fine-leaved plants, moss, or root tangles. The male courts the female with lateral displays and quivering, showing off his brighter colouration and flashing eye-spots. When the female is receptive, the pair aligns side by side and releases a small number of eggs and sperm simultaneously. The fertilised eggs adhere to plant surfaces or fine substrate and are then left without parental attention.
Breeding
Under aquarium conditions, conditioning Plataplochilus cabindae for breeding follows the pattern common to non-annual plant-spawning lampeyes. A small, heavily planted breeding tank or a tank furnished with fine-leaved plants and spawning mops is the standard approach. The couple or small group is conditioned on varied live and frozen small foods, and eggs are deposited in small batches over an extended period — a few eggs per day or per spawning event rather than a single large clutch.
Hobby sources focused on related lampeyes (notably Norman's lampeye, Poropanchax normani) indicate that the optimal temperature for successful spawning in lampeyes of this type is somewhat cooler than for many tropical species — around 64–70 °F — and that temperatures above 72–73 °F can suppress spawning activity, even though adult fish remain healthy at those temperatures. FishBase records 72–75 °F as the species' natural habitat temperature range; this suggests that aquarium breeding may benefit from the lower end of that window. Eggs should be removed from the breeding tank or the adults separated from the spawning substrate to protect the eggs, as lampeyes are not known to guard their clutches. Fry hatch small and require appropriately fine first foods: infusoria or commercial fry powder, progressing to baby brine shrimp nauplii as they grow.
In the aquarium
FishBase notes that Plataplochilus cabindae is very difficult to maintain in the aquarium — an assessment likely reflecting its narrow water-parameter window, sensitivity to bacterial and other pathogens under sub-optimal conditions, and a limited presence in the hobby that has not produced the accumulated practical knowledge available for more frequently kept killifish. The species is not commonly encountered in the ornamental trade and is predominantly a specialist's fish, circulated among killifish society members and dedicated procatopodid enthusiasts rather than appearing in mainstream retail.
For those who obtain it, the basic husbandry framework for a non-annual lampeye applies: a well-filtered, densely planted tank with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.2) maintained at 72–75 °F; subdued lighting that shows off the iridescent eye-spots to best effect; peaceful tankmates small enough not to threaten adults but large enough not to be eaten. Because of the species' rarity in captivity and restricted wild range, hobbyists keeping P. cabindae are encouraged to participate in captive-maintenance and studbook programmes operated through killifish societies such as the American Killifish Association (AKA) or the British Killifish Association (BKA), which help maintain insurance populations of species with low hobby representation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Plataplochilus cabindae as Least Concern (LC) in an assessment recorded on 16 February 2009, citing no imminent documented threats at the time of evaluation. The species occupies a geographically compact range across the Louilou, Loémé, Chiloango, and Lombo drainage systems in a coastal zone spanning the Republic of Congo, the Cabinda enclave of Angola, western DRC, and southern Gabon.
Although the LC status indicates no acute extinction risk, the restricted range warrants ongoing attention. The coastal forest zone of this region faces pressure from logging, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development that can alter the hydrology and water quality of small rivers and swampy habitats of the type P. cabindae occupies. Introduction of non-native species — including the widely invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) — to west-central African river systems poses a speculative but real risk to small, schooling lampeyes wherever these introductions occur. The Cabinda enclave itself has a history of development pressure tied to petroleum extraction, which can affect drainage basin integrity. The 2009 assessment pre-dates more than a decade of continued land-use change in the region, and a reassessment drawing on more recent survey data would better characterise current population status.
