Plesiolebias fragilis is one of the smallest annual killifish known — adults top out at just 1 in standard length, making it a miniature even by the standards of a family renowned for diminutive size. Restricted to the seasonal floodplain pools of the middle rio Araguaia basin in Brazil's Tocantins state, it lives its entire life in a few months, spawning in soft substrate before the dry season consumes its ephemeral home. Described by Wilson Costa in 2007, it carries a name that acknowledges its delicate proportions: the species epithet is Latin for 'fragile', and that fragility is not merely nominal — the species depends on a narrow window of seasonal rainfall and a shrinking network of Cerrado wetlands.

Taxonomy & naming

Plesiolebias fragilis was described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 2007 in Zootaxa volume 1410 (pages 1–41), a major revision of the South American annual killifish grouped under the subfamily Cynopoecilinae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) treats Plesiolebias Costa, 1989 as the valid genus, placing it within the family Rivulidae (or Cyprinodontidae sensu lato depending on the classification adopted). The authority is therefore Costa, 2007 — unbracketed, as the species has remained in its original genus since description.

The genus name Plesiolebias is a compound of Greek plesios (near, close to) and Lebias, a historical genus name applied to small killifish-like cyprinodontiforms — the name signals that these fish resemble, but stand apart from, that older grouping. The species epithet fragilis is Latin for 'fragile' or 'brittle', applied by Costa to reflect the exceptionally small body size and delicate constitution of this species relative to its congeners. FishBase records a maximum of 1 in standard length — placing it among the tiniest annual killies in South America.

Within Plesiolebias, phylogenetic work by Costa and subsequent authors has organised the genus into several informal species groups based on colour pattern and meristic characters. P. fragilis belongs to a cluster of small-bodied, Araguaia-basin species. Its closest relatives — congeners occupying overlapping or adjacent drainages — include other diminutive annual killies whose taxonomy continues to be refined as field collections from remote Cerrado localities produce new material.

Morphology

At a maximum of 1 in standard length, Plesiolebias fragilis sits at the extreme small end of the Rivulidae. The body plan is typical of the South American annual killifish clade: short and laterally compressed, with a rounded caudal fin, a relatively large eye set high and forward on the head, and a small upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding on aquatic invertebrates. The dorsal fin is set far back on the body, above or slightly anterior to the anal fin — a configuration characteristic of annual killifish that prefer surface-to-mid-water layers over open substrate.

Sexual dimorphism is present and follows the pattern typical of rivulid annual killifish: males are more vividly marked, with iridescent pigment on the flanks and fins that varies by species and population, while females are cryptically coloured — pale to brownish, with irregular spotting or streaking that provides camouflage against leaf litter and sediment. Because the species is so small and field-collected specimens are rarely preserved in perfect condition, detailed colour descriptions in the original description (Costa, 2007) are considered the primary morphological reference.

Habitat

Plesiolebias fragilis is known from seasonal floodplain pools and swampy depressions in the middle rio Araguaia basin, with collection localities documented at Formoso de Araguaia and Barreira do Piqui in Tocantins state, Brazil, and along the BR-242 highway corridor between Formoso and São João do Javaés. These habitats are characteristic of the Cerrado — Brazil's vast interior savanna biome — where rain-filled pools form during the wet season (roughly October through April) on flat, poorly drained terrain underlain by lateritic soils.

The pools that P. fragilis inhabits are shallow, warm, and soft-bottomed: accumulated leaf litter, fine sediment, and decomposing organic matter form a dense, anoxic substrate layer that the fish will use for spawning. Water chemistry in these Cerrado peat pools tends toward soft and slightly acidic conditions, reflecting low mineral content and organic-acid leaching from decaying vegetation, though conditions shift through the season as water evaporates and concentrates. By late dry season — typically June through September — the pools have entirely disappeared, and only the buried eggs remain to carry the population through to the next rains.

Feeding

Like its rivulid relatives, Plesiolebias fragilis is an opportunistic predator of small aquatic invertebrates. The upturned mouth and forward-set eyes are adapted for surface and near-surface foraging: small insects and their larvae, copepods, ostracods, and other microcrustaceans form the core wild diet. In the ephemeral pools the species occupies, food webs are dense but brief — the burst of productivity that follows pool formation in the early wet season drives rapid growth to sexual maturity.

In captivity, small live foods are essential given the species' tiny mouth and its preference for active prey. Micro-worms, newly hatched Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and cultured infusoria are appropriate staples. Prepared micro-pellets may be accepted by established individuals, but the fish rarely thrive on dry food alone. Because adults are so small, care is needed to ensure food items are appropriately sized — anything larger than roughly a third of the fish's head width tends to be ignored or attempted and dropped.

Mating

Plesiolebias fragilis is a substrate-diving annual killifish, and its mating behaviour follows the pattern defined for South American annual killies in the hobby classification system (AKA Class 3). When a pair is ready to spawn, the male courts the female with lateral displays — flaring unpaired fins to present his colour pattern — before manoeuvring alongside her. Unlike bubble-nest builders or plant-spawners, the pair drives downward together into the soft substrate (peat, mud, or detritus) to a depth of several millimetres to several centimetres, depositing a single egg with each dive.

The spawning embrace is brief and repeated: the pair resurfaces, the male courts again, and they dive again, producing eggs at intervals across a spawning session that may last an hour or more. Each egg is individually buried, protected by the surrounding anaerobic sediment. Females do not produce large clutches in a single day — output is modest, befitting a fish 1 in long — but spawning continues over multiple sessions across the wet season, maximising the number of buried eggs distributed through the substrate before the pool dries.

Breeding

Once the eggs are buried in the substrate, the biology of P. fragilis shifts from the adult fish to the embryo. Annual killifish eggs undergo a complex sequence of developmental arrest — diapause — that allows the embryo to survive the dry season in a state of suspended animation. Killifish researchers distinguish up to three diapause stages (DI, DII, DIII), each corresponding to a different point in embryonic development; most annual rivulids pass through at least DII, the extended dormancy that carries the embryo through the harshest part of the dry season. Eggs are desiccation-resistant but not desiccation-proof: the moist, anoxic sediment layer protects them through the months when the pool surface has dried to cracked mud.

In the aquarium, the standard protocol for annual killifish involves spawning the fish on a deep layer of peat or coconut-coir substrate, removing and drying the substrate to approximately 60–70% humidity, and storing it in a sealed bag at room temperature for a diapause period appropriate to the species — typically two to four months for Plesiolebias. At the end of the storage period, the peat is wetted with aged, slightly acidic water; hatching typically occurs within five to fifteen days at around 77 °F. Newly hatched fry are tiny but mobile and begin feeding on infusoria or first-instar Artemia nauplii within hours. Growth is fast — the fish reach sexual maturity in six to eight weeks under good conditions, mirroring the urgency of a life cycle calibrated to a brief wet season.

In the aquarium

Plesiolebias fragilis is a specialist fish suited to the experienced killifish keeper rather than the general aquarist. Its tiny size (1 in adult), specific breeding requirements, and sensitivity to water quality place it outside the range of conventional community aquaria. A dedicated breeding setup — a small tank of 2.5–5.5 US gal, lightly planted or bare-bottomed with a deep peat substrate for spawning, and housing a single pair or a small group — is the standard approach.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic, reflecting the Cerrado pool environment: pH in the range 5.5–6.5, low hardness, and a temperature of 72–79 °F. Regular small water changes with similarly conditioned water help maintain quality without the osmotic shock that dilute, soft water fish can be vulnerable to when given hard tap water directly. Because the fish are so small and delicate, filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter running at low flow is preferred over any power filter likely to create turbulence. The tank should be kept covered; annual killies are active near the surface and will jump.

Plesiolebias fragilis is traded rarely, typically through specialist killifish societies and hobbyist exchange networks rather than commercial importers. The AKA (American Killifish Association) lists it in their studbook and members occasionally offer eggs or fry through species conservation programmes. Keeping this species in the hobby is itself a conservation act: captive populations buffer against the loss of wild localities.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Plesiolebias fragilis as Least Concern (LC) in November 2018 (assessment contributed by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio). Least Concern reflects that the species is not currently believed to meet the thresholds for a threatened category — but for a fish of known restricted distribution in a biome under severe and accelerating pressure, that assessment warrants careful reading.

The middle rio Araguaia basin and the broader Cerrado are among Brazil's most threatened biomes. The Cerrado has lost more than half of its original extent to agricultural conversion — principally soy cultivation and cattle ranching — and the rate of clearing accelerated through the 2010s and 2020s. The seasonal floodplain pools that P. fragilis occupies are precisely the low-lying areas most vulnerable to drainage for agriculture and to hydrological alteration from upstream deforestation, which changes flood pulse timing and pool duration. A fish whose life cycle is precisely calibrated to the duration of a seasonal pool — spawn, lay eggs, die; eggs hatch, fish grow, spawn again, die, all within one wet season — has no buffer against a dry season that arrives three weeks early or a pool that no longer refills reliably.

The species is also extremely small and poorly known outside specialist circles, which means it is unlikely to feature in large-scale monitoring programmes. Its continued presence in hobby collections through killifish associations represents a meaningful insurance population, and renewed field surveys of the Araguaia floodplain are needed to update the IUCN assessment with current distributional data.
