Plesiolebias xavantei is a small annual killifish endemic to temporary pools and swamps in the floodplain of the middle Tocantins River in Tocantins state, central Brazil. The type species of its genus, it was originally described in 1988 as Cynolebias xavantei and transferred to the newly erected Plesiolebias in 1995. Males display a striking pattern of eleven to twelve dark brownish-red oblique crossbars on a purple-brown body, offset by rows of pale blue spots, making it one of the more ornate South American annuals despite its modest 1–2 in size. Eggs spend six to nine months buried in the drying substrate before hatching — an unusually long diapause even by the standards of annual killies — and the species is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with a restricted, fragmented range threatened by agricultural conversion and water abstraction in the Tocantins basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Plesiolebias xavantei was formally described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa, Maria Teresa Rodrigues Lacerda, and Setsuo Tanizaki in 1988, placed in the genus Cynolebias — a large wastebasket genus for South American annual killies that was progressively fragmented as phylogenetic study advanced. The specific epithet xavantei honours the Xavante people, the largest Amerindian ethnic group of the region in central Brazil where the species was collected, roughly between the Rio das Mortes and Rio Culuene drainages of Mato Grosso; the name is a genitive form of Xavante, meaning 'of the Xavante'.

In 1995, Costa erected the genus Plesiolebias to accommodate a group of Tocantins-basin annuals with a distinctive combination of morphological characters, and xavantei was designated as the type species of the new genus — a position it still holds. Subsequent molecular and morphological work, including Costa's 2007 revision in Zootaxa (no. 1410) of the genera Pituna, Plesiolebias, and Maratecoara, confirmed the genus as a natural group of small annuals restricted largely to seasonal habitats within the Araguaia-Tocantins and adjacent Xingu and upper Paraguay basins of Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Plesiolebias xavantei Costa, Lacerda & Tanizaki, 1988.

The American Killifish Association classifies the species in Class 3 (South American Annuals), consistent with its annual life cycle and peat-spawning reproductive mode. The name Hypsolebias xavantei is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Plesiolebias xavantei is a small, deep-bodied annual killi reaching approximately 1 in in the smaller-bodied males commonly seen in the hobby, with FishBase recording a maximum of 2 in total length for the species. The body profile is noticeably deep relative to length — a characteristic shared across the genus — and the fins are broad and rounded.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Males are purple-brown on the flanks, marked with eleven to twelve dark brownish-red oblique crossbars that run diagonally from the dorsal surface toward the belly; superimposed on this pattern are rows of pale iridescent blue spots that shift and scatter the light across the flank. The dorsal fin is purple. Females are considerably plainer: light brown overall with similar but less vivid crossbars, the unpaired fins hyaline (colourless and transparent). This strong colour contrast between the sexes is typical of annual killies, where male ornamentation is closely tied to mate selection.

A distinctive feature of the genus, and a useful identification character, is the deep, compressed body form combined with the oblique barring pattern — more diagonal than the vertical bars of many other South American annuals. Eggs are notably small compared with most annual killies, which correlates with the long diapause period during which metabolic resources must be conserved.

Habitat

Plesiolebias xavantei inhabits temporary pools, seasonal swamps, and floodplain depressions associated with the middle Tocantins River in Tocantins state, central Brazil. Collection localities documented in the hobby and scientific literature include Porto Nacional in Goiás and Brejinho de Nazaré in Tocantins — small towns along the middle course of the river separated by roughly 249 mi, indicating the species is distributed across a stretch of the middle basin rather than a single point.

These habitats are defined by their impermanence: they fill during the wet season (approximately October to April) and dry completely during the long dry season, leaving only soft substrate — typically fine mud, peat-like organic detritus, and vegetable matter — in which the eggs of annual killies are deposited and where they undergo diapause. Water during the wet phase is typically warm, soft, and acidic in seasonally flooded Neotropical savannas (cerrado), with low conductivity. Vegetation is emergent grasses, sedges, and aquatic macrophytes whose decaying matter contributes to the substrate in which eggs are buried.

The Tocantins River basin drains the cerrado uplands of central Brazil — a biome characterised by marked seasonality, with a pronounced dry season that drives the annual life cycle of species like xavantei. The floodplain pools in which this species occurs are ecologically distinct from the blackwater habitats of Amazonian peatswamps, and the water chemistry, while likely soft and slightly acidic, should not be assumed to match the extreme conditions of lowland Amazonian rainforest.

Feeding

Like other small South American annual killies, Plesiolebias xavantei is a carnivore in the wild, feeding on microinvertebrates — small aquatic insects, chironomid larvae, copepods, ostracods, and other zooplankton — that proliferate rapidly in newly filled seasonal pools. The short active life of an annual killi in the wild places a premium on rapid growth and energy acquisition, which favours a diet rich in animal protein.

In captivity, the species accepts a range of live and frozen foods appropriate to its small size: Artemia nauplii, micro-worms (Panagrellus), Daphnia, and fine-grade frozen bloodworm are all suitable. Prepared dry foods may be accepted by some individuals but live and frozen foods are strongly preferred and produce better condition and colouration. Young fry require infusoria or commercially available liquid fry food for the first two to three weeks before transitioning to newly hatched Artemia nauplii.

Mating

Plesiolebias xavantei is an annual killi with substrate-spawning, diapausing eggs — a reproductive strategy in which the male and female dive together into the soft substrate of the pool floor and deposit eggs directly in the mud or peat during an embrace. Each spawning dive produces a small number of eggs that are left buried in the substrate without parental attention. This mode of spawning, sometimes called 'deep diving' in the killifish literature, distinguishes annual South American killies from non-annual species that deposit adhesive eggs on plant surfaces or roots.

Male colouration intensifies during courtship: the purple-brown flanks and blue spot rows serve as visual signals in the shallow, turbid water of temporary pools. Males typically constitute approximately 90% of offspring — a strongly male-biased sex ratio documented for this species in the hobby, a phenomenon whose adaptive significance in annual killies is not fully understood but may relate to mate-competition dynamics in short-lived populations that must re-establish from buried egg banks each wet season.

Breeding

The defining biological feature of Plesiolebias xavantei in the context of annual killifish is its unusually long egg incubation period: eggs require six to nine months of diapause before hatching, and some reports indicate the period can be even longer — substantially exceeding the three-to-four-month incubation typical of many other South American annuals. This extended diapause corresponds to the long dry season of the Tocantins cerrado and is an intrinsic property of the eggs rather than a response to keeper conditions.

In the hobby, eggs are collected by straining the peat or coir spawning medium on which the breeding pair are kept. The damp medium containing eggs is sealed in a labelled plastic bag and stored in a warm, dark place for the appropriate diapause period before re-wetting, which triggers hatching within days to weeks. Eggs are notably small relative to those of other annual killies — a character noted in the primary literature — which may require careful handling during the rinse and incubation process. Fry need infusoria or liquid fry food for the first weeks, transitioning to Artemia nauplii thereafter. Under good conditions, fish mature within approximately two months of hatching, completing the rapid generational turnover that defines annual killies.

FishBase records an incubation period of four months for the species; hobbyist accounts consistently report six to nine months or longer, suggesting the shorter figure may reflect atypical conditions. Keepers are advised to allow at minimum six months before concluding eggs are infertile.

In the aquarium

Plesiolebias xavantei has a reputation in the killifish hobby as a challenging species — FishBase characterises it as difficult to maintain in the aquarium. It entered broad hobby availability only around March 2019, according to records at itrainsfishes.net, and remains uncommon outside specialist killifish circles. The principal difficulties are typical of annual killies: managing the long diapause period accurately, providing appropriate first foods for fry, and maintaining adults in a state of good health through their short life span.

A dedicated species tank is the appropriate setup: a small, well-covered aquarium (5.5–10 US gal) with a thin layer of peat or fine-grain substrate and dim lighting suits the species' floodplain-pool ecology. The tank must be covered — annual killies are active surface fish and will jump. Water should be soft, slightly acidic, and warm (approximately 72–79 °F), consistent with the cerrado seasonal pool environment; hard alkaline water is unsuitable. A clump of fine-leaved plants or floating plant cover provides visual security. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter is ideal — as these fish are not accustomed to strong currents.

The American Killifish Association records five JAKA (Journal of the American Killifish Association) article references for xavantei, indicating the species has received focused hobbyist attention despite its rarity in the trade. Its combination of striking male colouration, the engrossing biology of the annual cycle, and its status as type species of a scientifically interesting genus makes it a prized fish for dedicated killi keepers, even if it demands more patience and precision than hardier annuals.

Conservation

Plesiolebias xavantei is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B2ab(ii,iii,iv,v), with the assessment conducted by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and submitted in November 2018. The B2 criterion flags a restricted area of occupancy combined with decline — the species has a small, fragmented range confined to temporary pool habitats within the middle Tocantins River floodplain, and those habitats face multiple converging pressures.

The cerrado biome in which xavantei occurs is one of the most heavily converted ecosystems in South America: large-scale soybean and cattle agriculture has drained and filled seasonal pools across broad swaths of the Tocantins and Araguaia basins, directly destroying the temporary pool habitat that annual killies depend on. The Tocantins River itself has been heavily dammed — the Tucuruí dam downstream and several smaller impoundments along the middle course have altered hydrology, reduced floodplain connectivity, and changed the seasonal flood pulse that drives the wet-season pool formation on which the species' life cycle depends. Water abstraction for agriculture during the dry season reduces the duration and depth of refilling in remaining pools, potentially stranding eggs or shortening the active season below what is required for adults to reach reproductive maturity.

As a type-specimen anchor of the genus Plesiolebias and a species restricted to a handful of known localities, xavantei represents both a scientific and a conservation priority. Its annual life cycle, entirely dependent on soft pool substrates that survive the dry season intact, leaves it with no buffer against catastrophic habitat loss: unlike a longer-lived fish that can persist through an unfavourable year, an annual killi population is re-founded from scratch each wet season from the egg bank. If the pool is destroyed during the dry phase, the entire population of that pool is lost.
