Rachovia brevis is a small, short-lived annual killifish native to the seasonal pools and flood-plain backwaters of northern Colombia, where the waters of the Río Magdalena basin expand and then vanish each year. Like all members of its genus, it lives its entire wild life in the narrow window between the arrival of the rains and the return of the dry season — a few weeks at most — burying its eggs in the clay or mud before the pool disappears, and leaving the next generation to sleep out the drought in arrested diapause until the rains return. In the killifish hobby it is valued as a classic South American annual: challenging to breed well, rewarding when the peat-stored eggs wake on cue, and a window onto one of freshwater biology's most extreme life-history strategies.

Taxonomy & naming

Rachovia brevis was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1912, placing the species in what was then a broader concept of the toothcarp fauna of tropical South America. The authority is presented in parentheses — (Regan, 1912) — because the species has since been transferred from its original generic assignment into the genus Rachovia, erected to accommodate a cluster of Colombian and Venezuelan annual killifishes with closely related morphology and shared annual breeding biology. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Rachovia brevis (Regan, 1912).

The genus Rachovia is placed within the family Rivulidae (South American annual killifishes), a large Neotropical family whose members are united by the annual life-history strategy: eggs that survive desiccation in arrested development (diapause) through the dry season. The genus name Rachovia honours the Venezuelan locality and collector tradition within the historical taxonomy of South American killies. The specific epithet brevis is Latin for 'short' — almost certainly a reference to the compact, relatively deep body form that distinguishes this species within the genus.

The type locality recorded in the original description is associated with the Soplaviento region and the area around Sincelejo in northern Colombia, in the drainage of the Río Magdalena. The species has also been recorded from coastal-lowland habitats along the northern Colombian plain, and It Rains Fishes specifically documents the Soplaviento area, a small village near the Río Magdalena, as a confirmed collection locality.

Morphology

Rachovia brevis is a small killifish, reaching approximately 2.5 in standard length at maximum (FishBase). The body is relatively compact and laterally compressed, as is characteristic of the genus. Like other South American annual killies, males and females are strikingly different in appearance: males carry the bright, patterned colouration typical of the group — blue-green iridescent flanks overlaid with red or orange markings and unpaired fin patterning — while females are cryptically coloured in olive-brown with little ornamentation, a dimorphism that is extreme even by killifish standards.

The fin arrangement is typical of Rivulidae: a single dorsal fin set well back on the body, positioned above or slightly ahead of the anal fin, and a rounded caudal fin. The mouth is upturned, adapted for surface-feeding. The overall build is stouter and deeper-bodied than many of the slender, pencil-bodied annual killifishes of the llanos, which is consistent with the specific epithet brevis suggesting a compact form.

The skin of annual killifishes in this group is delicate by aquarium standards, and adults age visibly over their brief lives. Wild fish are often in their final weeks when collected; hobbyists working with the species note that physical condition can decline quickly, making timely breeding essential.

Habitat

Rachovia brevis occupies the seasonal pools and flooded depressions of northern Colombia — small, shallow, temporary bodies of water that fill during the rainy season and evaporate completely during the dry months. The type locality area near Soplaviento sits within the lowland floodplain of the Río Magdalena, where seasonal inundation creates a mosaic of temporary and semi-permanent pools across the flat terrain. It Rains Fishes documents the species from clay-bottomed seasonal pools in this region.

Water chemistry in the recorded habitats reflects the lowland tropical setting: FishBase gives pH approximately 7 and temperature around 72 °F, with hardness around 15 dGH — relatively soft but not the acidic blackwater associated with West African forest killies. The pools are typically shallow, well-vegetated at the margins, and high in organic detritus from leaf litter and decomposing plant matter, which provides the soft substrate into which the fish spawn.

During the dry season, the pools disappear entirely. The adult fish die, as they do everywhere in the range of obligate annual killies. Only the buried eggs survive — sitting in the moist clay or peat beneath the cracked dry surface, completing their diapause until the first rains rewet the pool weeks or months later.

Feeding

Rachovia brevis is a micropredator in the wild, feeding on the invertebrates and small organisms that colonise its seasonal pool habitat during the brief wet season: aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and surface-dwelling invertebrates. The upturned mouth suggests a preference for surface or near-surface prey, consistent with the feeding ecology of most rivulid killifishes of similar build.

In the aquarium the species is straightforward to feed: it accepts live and frozen Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and small tubifex without hesitation, and most individuals will in time take high-quality dried or pellet foods. Live food is particularly valuable for conditioning breeding pairs, and many hobbyists rely on Artemia nauplii as a staple, shifting to adult Artemia and frozen bloodworm as the fish mature. The species is not aggressive at feeding and tankmates of similar size will generally share food without competition.

Mating

Rachovia brevis follows the typical reproductive pattern of South American annual killifishes: it is a substrate-spawner (or more precisely, a soil-diver), in which the male and female perform a prolonged courtship leading to a spawning embrace in which the pair plunge together into the soft substrate — peat, mud, clay, or detritus — and release eggs and sperm while briefly buried. This bottom-diving embrace is the diagnostic behaviour of the South American annual killifish group and distinguishes them sharply from plant-spawning non-annual killies, which deposit eggs in vegetation or fine-leaved plants.

Males are persistently active in courtship, displaying their bright lateral and fin colouration to females and performing lateral flank displays. Dominant males may chase and intimidate smaller males, so in a breeding setup multiple females per male or carefully managed separation is advisable. The spawning act is vigorous and brief: the pair dive into the substrate together, eggs are released and fertilised in the mud, and the pair return to open water. A single pair may spawn many times over several days or weeks, depositing a small number of eggs per dive.

Egg development in the substrate proceeds through a diapause phase — a period of arrested development that allows the embryo to survive desiccation. In the wild this is what bridges the dry season; in the hobby it is the mechanism that the keeper manages by drying the peat and storing it until the desired hatch date.

Breeding

In the aquarium, Rachovia brevis is bred on a layer of moist peat or coir spawning medium placed on the tank bottom, into which the pair dive to deposit eggs. The tank is typically set up simply: a small bare or sand-floored aquarium with a few centimetres of peat on the bottom, the breeding pair, and good-quality water at the parameters FishBase records for the species (~pH 7, ~72 °F, moderately soft). After several weeks of spawning — the pair are observed regularly for spawning activity — the peat is siphoned out, squeezed lightly to remove excess moisture, and stored in a sealed plastic bag or container at room temperature.

It Rains Fishes gives an egg incubation period of 12–16 weeks for the species, with the hobbyist storing the moist peat through this period. Higher temperatures accelerate development; water pH of the hatching water also appears to influence hatch timing and success. After the storage period, the peat is placed in shallow, warm, slightly acidic water and the fry hatch within hours to days. Fry are small but vigorous and begin feeding on Artemia nauplii immediately.

Juveniles grow quickly: It Rains Fishes documents sexual maturity at approximately 6 weeks post-hatch, after which the young fish are ready to spawn themselves. This rapid development is an adaptation to the short wet season — the wild fish must hatch, grow, mate, spawn, and die before the pool dries again. In the aquarium, keepers who maintain the species typically run overlapping generations, beginning a new batch of eggs before the adult fish reach the end of their natural lifespan.

In the aquarium

Rachovia brevis is not a beginner's killifish, but it is an accessible entry point into South American annual killies for a hobbyist already comfortable with the basic care requirements of the group. The setup is modest in scale: a small species aquarium (10–15 US gal is ample for one or two pairs), mildly lit with floating plants or surface cover to reduce stress, and a layer of peat or fine substrate for spawning. Water conditions should follow the species' native parameters — around pH 7, 72 °F, moderately soft — rather than the very acidic conditions sometimes assumed for all killies; this is not a blackwater species.

The principal skill involved is managing the diapause egg storage cycle: knowing when to pull the peat, how dry to store it, and when and how to re-wet it for hatching. The 12–16 week incubation window documented by It Rains Fishes is a practical guide, but experienced keepers often check a small sample of eggs under a loupe to assess embryo development stage before triggering hatch. The fish themselves are peaceful within the species and not demanding once the cycle is understood; the challenge is timing and record-keeping.

Rachovia brevis does not appear widely in mainstream ornamental trade, but it circulates among killifish society members (such as those of the American Killifish Association and European equivalents) via egg-sharing and fish loans. The American Killifish Association lists the genus Rachovia among the South American annual killifish groups it supports, and the species can be sourced through society networks more reliably than through retail channels.

Conservation

Rachovia brevis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is a common situation for South American annual killifishes, many of which are small, geographically restricted, and insufficiently studied to support a formal assessment, even when the species' biology suggests real vulnerability.

The biology of R. brevis makes it inherently sensitive to land-use change: it exists in small, isolated seasonal pools that disappear annually, with no capacity for individuals to move to alternative habitats during the dry season. The entire population depends on eggs buried in the substrate of specific pools surviving both the dry season and the resumption of rains. Any modification that permanently drains or fills those pools — agricultural drainage, road construction, or the expansion of cattle ranching across the northern Colombian lowlands — eliminates a local population with no possibility of recolonisation from elsewhere within the same dry season. The Río Magdalena lowlands, where the species is recorded, face significant pressure from agricultural intensification and deforestation.

The introduction of mosquitofish (Gambusia species) — widely released across tropical South America as a malaria-control measure — poses an additional threat to annual killifish pools, as Gambusia are aggressive and consume eggs and small fry. The combination of habitat loss and introduced competitors has driven a number of related rivulid species toward rarity, and without a formal survey of remaining R. brevis populations in northern Colombia, the true conservation situation cannot be assessed. The first step toward understanding that situation is fieldwork to document current pool occupancy across the known range.
